I agree Spence..way to go.maybe it was the contraversy or maybe more people agree with them than some people want to believe :D or maybe people just really like thier music, that might be the biggest reason :D

I have never owned a chicks album. I'm not a huge country fan, but there were a couple of songs of their's that I liked, but I do not think I will ever buy one of their albums. And it has nothing to do with what they said. As a matter of fact, I applaud them for exercising their right to say what they said.

What I do have a problem with is that as soon as fans started expressing their displeasure with what they said, other CMA ran to their defense, telling the fans, the ones who pay for the records, who have just as much right to disagree with what they said, to leave the Chicks alone, it's not right, yadda yadda yadda. That is a double standard of the highest order. Vince Gill and the rest of these political scholars are up there defending the Chicks right to free speech and at the same time telling the fans to stop booing the Chicks. Talk about a hypocrite. If you are going use you fame and popularity to make a statement like that, then you have to be ready to stand up and take the heat and IMO, the Chicks want to be able to say what they want and not catch any heat for it or expect to have to defend it. I'm not even convinced they believe what they said. I do however, believe, it had everything to do with selling records. And I have even more problems with all of their recording artists buddies (Reba McIntyre and the like)running to their defense and telling the fans to leave them alone, they've suffered enough, yadda yadda yadda.

TO the Chicks I would say "You want to exercise your right to free speech, I salute you. You don't want the heat that comes with it, keep your trap shut." YOU CANNOT HAVE IT BOTH WAYS.

I am not sure I am willing to give the Chickens as much as most are. They are musicians... and that is ALL they can do. We pay them to do a service... we basically use them for our pleasure... and when we are finished using them we dont care what they think or feel. We just want them to SHUT UP and go away until we are ready to use them once again.

This goes for all those big mouthed actors in Hollywood as well who seem to think just because they can act that we, the public, give a crap what they think about anything at all.

You serve me... so shut up and act!

(I think most Americans feel this way deep down).

I like the dixie chicks music, and my wife and I have ALL their cd's. WE do not believe in their politics though. They are just good musically.

I find it appualing the hypocracy they partake in though.
They blasted Toby Kieth for his "Angry American" song in which one line says "we'll put a boot in your ass, it's the american way". The Chicks said it was a terrible example to our youth. Then at the CMA's (country music awards) they had t-shirts on that said "FU TK" (I'm sure you know what that means, and who it was directed at).
This is just one of the many "questionable" things the chicks have done. Including speaking out against the country, then blasting GW. When it comes to politics, they have no clue, music is what they are good at, and should stick to it.

If there's something I really can't stand it's country music. Never heard a full song but I'm a huge fan of the Dixie Chicks!!! We're in America for a reason, it's their right to say whatever the hell they want and I applaud them for what they said. :Peace:

Yeeehaw! And besides, I agree with them, just not enough to actually buy one of their albums.

I forgot about this thread.

Here's my problem with the Dixie Chicks: Despite the fact that I didn't agree with them, I do feel like it was their American right to free speech...

HOWEVER, they weren't in America when they said it (which was a huge problem for me, given the hatered of Americans at the time overseas) and they had a "captive" audience.

People paid to hear them sing, not give a political speech. You can't "turn the channel" when you've paid your $60 bucks and you're sitting in the stadium. Say whatever you want on Entertainment tonight, but if I'm paying to hear you sing, shut up and sing!

Nope. Maybe the fact that they said it in a concert wouldda bothered some people but it's still their concert and there's always that magical thing called a refund. The fact that they're out of the U.S doesn't matter one bit. They don't have to go around and indorse America just because they come from this country. If I'm in Germany or France and someone asks me about the war I'll say exactly what they said and maybe even worse. I'm not responsible for defending this country's reputation when they do something I dissagree with.

I don't know what concerts you go to, but you can't demand a refund just cause you don't care for a comment the performers made.

I don't agree with you here. (doesn't mean you're wrong...I just don't agree) That could be considered a form of trieson. (sp?)
You have freedom of speech in america, the constution does not protect you outside of the US. Don't forget that.
If you told someone of your personal opinion, that's no big deal, 1- because you're a no one (just like all of us individuals here)
2- you're not addressing some 100 thousand people maybe more if it's televised.
You do not make situations worse just because you "feel like spouting off". Keep your concerns about this country, IN this country.

While they may have every right to spout off, we have every right to burn their CD's and call them unamerican. If they don't like it,go apply for citizenship somewhere else. Iraq maybe.

I've never been to a Toby concert, does he rant and rave about America in his concerts? Or does he get political or what?

Who the hell cares what they said?! If you don't agree, fine. I saw on the news about 2 months ago that people went to their concerts just to taunt them. One lady held a sign that read "Dixie Chicks, suck my gr*ts."

To equate a statement of disagreement with treason is a real problem. As far as I have heard, that is what the CHicks did, said we don't support the president's actions in going ot war in Iraq. This puts no one in danger, any more than when folks were reaming CLinton (and not just on the Monica Lewinsky thing, he got plenty of shit for other stuff). So should there have been cries of treason then? No, treason is more like the actions taken by the parties, who happen to be in the administration, described in the Somebody in the White House... thread, would'nt you agree?

See, that cracks me up.
Even if they go to protest, they are still PAYING to go. Where do these idiots think the money is going? So even verbally nonsupporting them, they are supporting them.

Unlike most actors or singers, Reagan ran for office and put his money where his mouth was. He also did it in liberal California. I'm quite sure if the loudmouth Garafalo or Maines ever stepped up to the plate it would be for some position in Marin County, CA.

Good for him. And good for people like Garafalo speaking their mind in the best tradition of free speech in America!

Reagan ran for office 37 years ago. California wasn't so liberal in 1966.

Was there even ONE liberal state in '66?

Well, better to be a republican than a democrat any day of the week.

I did not know he was originally a democrat. (I suppose some grow up and head down the correct path once in a while huh?) :D
