~ ~ ~ Although he refuses to use it as an excuse, another reason Hall’s numbers aren’t as good is that he spent half of every season kicking at Giants Stadium. The swirling winds and frequent winter rain and snow there complicate an already difficult process. Last year, Redskins kicker James Tuthill slipped as he approached a game-winning field goal attempt in the driving rain, ruining one of Washington’s biggest plays of the season.

“The last two years, the field has been a quagmire,” Stock offered.

~ ~ imho the field was the worst in the NFL.
( except maybe for the phil. eagles "field ".yes, i know they now have a new stadium/field. we ( the jets ) will have a new field/surface this year ).

I predict that the Jets/Giants will have problems with the new turf. I was watching a soccer game the other night, the one with Manchester United, and they kept having the sod coming up in chunks. I'm not sure how soon to game time they laid the sod, but it didn't look very durable...

Anyone remember that blowhard Brian Billick going over bad turf and giving the grounds crew instructions on what to do about it? I think that happened last year.

yes, and didn't they cancel that game due to poor field management?

If theres one coach I can't stand, its Billick...

Wasn't that a pre-season game at the 'Vet in Philly?

I think they put grass down for that game. The new turf for the Meadowlands is FieldTurf, the same stuff they use in detroit, Seattle and other Stadiums- it's artificial and doesn't come up in chunks.

Yes it was tough kicking on the Meadowlands turf the past few years but that wasn't the reason he was inconsistent, he was inconsistent when we had turf and he was inconsistent on the road. I like Hall and he's a better than average K(I still think you spent too much but...) but there are a few things that will drive you crazy about him and I guarantee you it happens this year:

-He will miss an important kick, not the GW kick necessarily but the kick that can out you up more than a score and clinch a game such as a K that can put you up 20-10 but he misses it and the other team can tie the game.

-He will get at least 2 unsportsmanlike conduct penalties. he likes to make tackles on KOs and will hit the guy even if he's out of bounds, he has done this every year since he was a rookie.

-He will have a few kicks blocked, he kick it low.

-You will never recover an onside kick attempt by him, he is the WORST I have ever seen at this. The Jets haven't come close to recovering an onside kick since he became the K. Most K's at leats give you hope but there was none w/ John.

Overall he is a pretty good K and from what I understand a big upgrade from your last K's but just remember this thread when these things begin to happen. By the way, I like John and while most jet fans didn;t I always defended him and I hope he does well down there- just not on 9/4.

Actually it was '01, the Jets played there the following week but I case they fixed it during the week.
