As you know I was happy with the first day and not with the second. Tandler though makes some very interesting points in his latest blog.

In evaluating these players, the Redskins undoubtedly saw those flaws and many more. And Joe Gibbs turned to the most expensive coaching staff in the history of mankind and told them that they would be the ones who will make or break this draft. Dale Lindsey, Greg Blache, Jerry Gray, and Joe Bugel will have to coach ‘em up, correct the flaws and turn them in to NFL players.

Bubba Tyer’s training and medical staff also may be taxed. McIntosh, Golston, and Simon all carry histories of significant injuries into the NFL and their success will be determined in large part by how well Tyer and company can help them overcome their past ailments.

Great points are made in the entire thing and I got to admit I may be changing my mind about the second day selections from "we are freakin crazy!" to "I will wait this out."

I'm about to read the article, but that quote doesn't fill me with confidence. It essentially says "We drafted crappy players who have lots of injuries, but we have experienced and highly paid coaches so that should make up for it." I'm not saying thats what I think, but thats what the quote sounds like. Now I'm off to read the article and put the quote in context.

EDIT: Ok it makes more sense in context. I'm still not excited yet, we'll see how I feel around training camp.

as in most cases, i really like tandler's take onthe issue.. there is raw material there to be molded.. in golston's case, for example, the guy is said to have really good feet for a big man.. i saw him play a couple of times watching georgia games with my daughter and son in law who are alums, and he did flash a few times. he can really take over a line when he is right, but he also disappears.

While some of those second day picks may be a little suspect, I guess my feeling is why would Gibbs and Co. make those picks if they didn't feel somewhat confident in these guys? It's safe to assume that many of them will not make the team, but our staff and FO is too smart to "waste" a pick, so it wouldn't make sense that they are drafting players that are either undeserving, or don't/won't fit with the team.

well, in my opinion, we have wasted picks before. And We may be wasting picks now. But after reading Tandler's take I understand the gamble. We are betting on our coaching staff's experience and expertise to get these guys to perform even better then before. With our expertise we may be drawing to a straight flush instead of hoping for a suck out on the river....but we are still gambling.

As I said I may be too harsh here but I will wait until final cut down day before things can be totally sussed out.

If Gregg Williams & Joe Gibbs can make Lemar Marshall, Antonio Pierce, Chris Cooley (to name a few) play as well as they have............Well then I wont be overly concerned with our 2nd day Draft picks.......We all need to realize that the Draft is a gamble-EVEN the 1st ROUNDERS............So let's bet the house!!!!!!!

That's actually a really great point, and sort of sums up Tandler's article. We have the greatest coaching staff ever assembled... these guys have already worked miracles with mediocre talent, and made great talent legendary. If they think they can whip some of these picks into solid players that will help the Redskins, then I'm down with it.

No way! Too late now! If we drafted all Pro-Bowlers in day 2 then you're in big trouble man...Hehehehe (sadistic laughter...)

First, lots of fans have way over-reacted to the second day draft picks. Most are lucky if they make the team and even get to play for a couple years. Once in a great while, a team lucks out with a Brady. People always point out the very few gems and forget to mention the hundreds of players who never made the team or maybe was a seldom used backup.

Gibbs and company know that. They went looking for special teamers and "defective" players that could be coached up. They chose players that other NFL teams dismissed for some reason. Most of these players have great athletic ability, played sparingly because of injuries, injuries did not let them perform to their best, and/or have bad technique.

With a little luck (avoid injuries) and great coaching, these players have the basic skills and ability to become very good players. Sure, they may not be high on Mel's board or any other draft web site; But they WERE on Gibbs and company's draft board. And the FOOTBALL knowledge and experience of Gibbs and his staff is far superior to these web draft boards run by scouts who are no longer employed by NFL teams.

So why do fans put more faith in Mel Kiper and his draftniks than Gibbs, Williams, Saunders, Bugel, Blache, Lindsey, etc? I have never understood this bias towards media toads that can't make it in the NFL.

Have some faith in Joe. In two years, he has remolded this team from crappy to playoff team. He filled key holes in the team this past year to make us a Super Bowl contender.

Hell, if all we have to complain about is whether we have a quality 4th cornerback, more depth on the offensive line and whether we did good in the 5th thru 7th round of the draft, we are sitting very pretty!

Have Faith......Hail!

Thanks for the post!

Thanks to Gibbs I don't have to turn the TV off at half time anymore. And even if we lose (both seasons) we are usually in it until the end.

He's to another great season. Cheers!

there is a reason why the public eats up what kiper has to say about potential draft picks and not what gibbs has to say... because gibbs doesnt say anything !! and kiper makes his living selling his opinions

gibbs is not in the business of touting his opinions on players--. his job is to assemble and coach the team
