Redskins | Special teams coach D. Smith discusses Lonie
Sat, 6 May 2006 10:37:11 -0700

David Elfin, of the Washington Times, reports Washington Redskins special teams coach Danny Smith said was upbeat talking about P David Lonie. Smith said, "David has some technique issues like any punter coming into the league, but he's got good power. Most punters and kickers in this league get recycled so with David's maturity level, we may be able to bypass a step. At the same time, he has only been punting for four years so you can still mold him. And he's played pro soccer, so he's been in the heat of a battle. He's got some intangibles that you can't coach."

Redskins | Special teams coach D. Smith discusses Frost
Sat, 6 May 2006 10:36:48 -0700

David Elfin, of the Washington Times, reports Washington Redskins special teams coach said P Derrick Frost needs to show more consistency when punting. Smith added, "Derrick has to be more consistent and show more power. We haven't had him for a whole year so he has some upside."

I am just tired of the waiting....I don't need upside, I need results!

Kicking game still scares me. With Frost I cross my fingers every time and John Hall I just don't trust to make the big kick. Also Hall can't kick deep on kick offs, I was hoping we'd do something about that.

since this guy used to play soccer and they say he has good power i can imagine that he could do pretty decent at kick offs. dont know how consistent he is though.

Lonie has power, Frost does not. Frost has played in the nfl, Lonie has not. Lonie might make some mistakes. Frost has already made some mistakes. i just want a guy who can boom it and i want deep kickoffs. if Lonie can kick it deep i that will give him the edge. if Frost could kick off then i assume he would have been doing so, since our kickoffs were horrible with Hall.

that was odd because they talked about last season but i do not remember frost kicking off.. maybe they did not think that much of his efforts.. but hall's were really short by the end

Frost needs to be pushed. Not to thrilled about someone who has no nfl experience. But if he can boom it then we need to look.

Everyone has kinda been bashing frosty, but I don't remember him really effing a punt up except once or twice this past season. It was a very inopportune time if I remember vs. Tampa right? Other than those one or two foul ups, he was pretty consistent. I do remember once or twice where he really boomed a couple, once I believe against seattle, when pinned down in the the playoffs. He's been O.K. not great by any means.

I'm cool with Gibbs and Smith's decision in the end.

Yeah that's it for me. I believe we signed Frost because of his placement on punts but it certainly wasn't for his "strong leg". IMO, we need somebody w/power too. We'll see if Lonie can put some hang time on his punts.

and not kick it into the endzone from inside the opponents 45 yard line.. frost seemed to do that a lot...

kicking a soccer ball 60 yards doesn't mean you can do that to a football. trust me, i've tried. this isn't the replacements here ;)

From the consistency perspective, it would be nice to settle on one punter and end this issue from year to year. Still trying to figure out what was wrong with Groom.

I have wondered the same thing. He seemed to have a strong leg, seemed like a good guy. What's not to like?

Frost on the other hand just doesn't seem to be the "guy". I don't know why. Maybe if Groom had played all year we would be saying to replace him.

I just don't understand all the problems in the kicking game. Why can't the Skins get this important phase of the game under control?
