Working with a CB coach like Gray, who could easily be a defensive coordinator on some teams, will make a huge difference for Rogers, IMO. Throw in Springs, Taylor, and Arch...man, that's lethal!

"Each defensive back in this league has the opportunity to make 10-12 interceptions -- they just have to catch them," he said.
If we can get those type of stats from him, we'll be unstoppable.
"He can diagnose and read and eliminate things as they come at him," Gray said. "The thing I want him to focus on is making the big play. If he's in position, he has to go ahead and finish the job."
I like the aggressive approach our defensive coaches teach the players. Seems like the perfect way to motivate him into reaching his fullest potential, hopefully become a pro-bowler.

Saunders might be the big name coaching addition, but Gray could easily be just as important. He had great success with Clements and Winfield, he turned a complete and utter project into a borderline pro-bowler in McGee, and he helped Troy Vincent make the transition to safety.

Since drafting Rogers, I have expected big things from him. He showed flashes last year during several games! This will definitely be the year that he starts to earn his place on this team & in the NFL. I look for big things form him this year, really BIG things! Nice to know that he wants it, as much as we want it for him! Way to put in the extra hours working on the fundamentals.

I couldn't agree more! Gray didn't let that Buffalo D slack off at all once GW left, and I was hoping we'd get him in '04. I am really excited to hear stories about Gray in camp!

if the d line can generate the kind of pass rush we hope it will, then the turnovers by the secondary will happen..

I would love that this year! I saw a lot of what Gray was talking 'bout, not only with the Skins, but with the league. So many were cheating on the look they made stats go up for receivers and QB's that aren't likely to be so lucky this year. I saw Moss breaking through in spite of tight coverages and all eyes on his break. I also saw the gears he has.
I think Rogers is the consumate CB for these type of receivers (Moss), because he has 5 gears too! Lucky for us, Moss is on our team :) .
The techniques are improving, on top of what he did in DEC. Scary.....

Actually, buffalo went from 2nd in defense in '04 to near the bottom in '05. Part of it had to do with injuries and the loss of Williams, but still, a huge drop-off. That being said, Gray still does fantastic work with DBs and should help the young guys tremendously, even AA might learn how to cover.

Yes, I was referring to '04. Last season Buffalo (as you mentioned) was hit hard with injuries and a horrendous offense. I'd take Gray as our D Coordinator should GW not be available.

LOL! Didn't know if anyone would catch that. I personally can't do "Wiz", but I definitely go "wit" onions.

My enduring image of Rogers is sticking with the play and disrupting the ball on the not a touchdown call in the tampa playoff game.
He could have given up, but he sticks with it and gets his fingers in there to make it incomplete.

Ah, I forgot how long GW had been away from Buffalo.

I personally feel that overall Rogers had a very good season last year. This year will be the year he tries to become a dominant CB in the league.

Thanks very much, Skinsfan, for posting the Wash. Times article about Carlos. I'm very pleased he approaches his sessions with Coach Gray with such seriousness and professionalism - notice how he admits his weaknesses - that's a sign of great maturity. Good for Carlos (Coach Gray sounds like a tough cookie!).
Will be nice to see Carlos knock T.O. on his fanny this season!
Go Skins!

This would be great, but i still think springs should stay on t.o.
One thing that does not matter is #21 will be there to help out.

I think the skins easied him into the NFL last year with good playing time at the end. This year he knows what it's all about and will be up to it.

Funny.
Point is that the Redskins have the best coaching staff in the NFL on every level. They will maximize these players potential.

With the addition of Al Saunders, this defense will be playing differently this season. I expect our offense to score a lot more and in the majority of our games, we will be playing from ahead. That said, teams will be forced to air it out more often than in the past and more than likely Carlos Rogers will be the most tested CB on the field. This should provide him with more opportunities for interceptions as well as blown coverages. Let's hope for the former more than the latter. I see no reason why he can't get 8+ interceptions and at the very least an alternate position for the Pro Bowl. This will be the year he proves to the rest of the NFL that HE was the best CB drafted in 2005.

Welcome to HR, Swirvi - excellent point. Rogers knows that now is his time to make his mark, and he'll be tested continually this year.

Rogers really has the right mindset and talent to become a force this season, and w/Jerry Gray in his corner (pun intended!) the sky's the limit for this kid, IMO.

Rogers should be the starter if for no other reason than his staunch run support. I can't remember a Redskin corner supporting the run so tenaciously since Pat Fischer.

competition at corner:
http://www.redskins.com/news/newsDetail.jsp?id=17909
It's no secret that projected starters for the Redskins at corner in the upcoming season are veteran Shawn Springs and second-year pro Carlos Rogers.
Beyond that, Gray said, there's solid competition with Ade Jimoh, Kenny Wright, Dimitri Patterson and Christian Morton in the fight.

In the 2005 draft, I had wanted the Skins to select Shawn Merriman with the 9th pick on the theory that a pass rush is the best pass defense. But, I am happy as well with Carlos Rogers, who appears to have the tools to be an upper-echlon corner for years to come.
Also, Merriman is probably more suited for the 3-4 defense and thus may not have been a good fit for the Skins. Besides, maybe he will be available as a free agent say 5 years from now.

But still let's be honest, I just don't think C.Rogers displays good on field speed sometimes. However, he does have good technique and good run support skills. So all in all, he is a good, solid CB, who needs to continue to develop before he can even smell the jockstraps of any of the upper echelon CB's.

i agree, he doesnt seem to have top notch speed. he's very physical though, which Williams seems to like (look at the size of all the corners on the current roster), and since teams will probably avoid Springs, he should get alot of tackles and several int's. plus he'll have help over the top from Taylor. having Taylor back there opens up alot of options.
he might make the probowl since voters count int's, but it's a complete travesty that Springs did not make the probowl with 6 sacks and teams avoiding him.
