Today I was laying down for a nap when all of a sudden I got a sharp constant pain around my kidney area. The pain grew worse and worse to where I couldn't stand and started to vomit. I went to the doctor and they told me I have a Kidney infection. They gave me a shot in the azz for the pain. I have to go get an ultra sound done on my kidney tomorrow because the doc says there is a good chance I have a kidney stone.
to make matters worse when I was nausous in the bathroom, the pain worsened and I grabbed the tank on the toilet to keep myself from falling over. Well the screws that hold the tank on were apparently rusted through and one popped off. A stream of water came pooring out one side of the tank. So somehow through the pain I bent down and stuck my finger in the hole to keep any more water from coming out until help arrived..lol...oh well I got a prescription of vicatin so soon nothing will matter.
My question is has anyone ever had a kidney stone? I hear they are extremely painful to pass

My Mom had them and she had them removed with some in/out surgery. She had to drink a ginger ale with some stuff (don't know what it was) in it that allowed them to see them. I know they are very painful though.

My friends dad had two and said it was the most painful thing ever :/ A mans equivalent of giving birth, lol. And to answer your question, yes, they are very, very difficult to pass.

I've heard it's the worst pain a man can feel, but I have known people who passed them with little to no pain. One roommate of mine passed his, and didn't even know it!!

I actually get kidney stones a lot had one 5 yrs ago and had to have it extracted due to size not a fun procedure...I still get 'em from time to time and it is a very , very painful ailment that can come and go at the drop of a hat and then drop you to your knees and make you sick without warning...when I was hospitalized I was put on a 10 min morphine drip....so yeah I feel your pain man.

My dad just passed his second round about a month ago. All I can say is sorry man, consider the drugs a consolation prize, and once it's over, it's over.

I had a large one when I was 4. Back then medcine and technology is not what it is now. Then, I had to have it surgically removed, which did a small bit of damage to one a kidney tube which needed replaced by transplant and I stayed in the hospital nearly one and half months. Even though I was a measley 4 years old, I can still to this day remember laying on my Mom's lap on the way tot he hospital. I will never forget that pain.

Any blood in your urine? Yes stones are painful (never had one but Cat Scan them all the time). They can be taken out different ways depending on size and location. Some they just let pass and give you drugs others they blast with ultrasound and break them up so you can pass them. Others still have to have them surgically removed. Sounds like you are in good hands, get plenty of pain meds so you can have it on hand if you have to pass em, cause most women that have them tell me they honestly would rather give birth (sorry TB).

Yeah, i noticed it the other day but didn't really think much of it.
I appreciate everyones input. It sounds like their might be some more pain in my future...I hope if I do have them that they are small enough to pass. I'm paying full price for this stuff because I am without insurance at the moment so having to have surgery would suck big time.

See if the hospital will give you an uninsured discount..most hospitals offer this to people in your situation if you agree to pay. Most people who dont have health insurance never intend to pay so for those like you that are nice enough to pay they usually offer reduced rates or discounts...look into it it could save you some serious $$$$$

Ouch, I've never had kidney stones, by my roommate did a few years back. Actually, the story is really infuriating, and now that it's popped into my mind, I feel the need to relay it to a bunch of people on a message board.
Back when I was in college, my roommate had been complaining for a while that he had some pains in his side. After a while the pain got so bad that he finally let me take him to the hospital. We waited in the waiting room of the ER for around 4 hours before he got taken to an exam room. I had to fill out his paperwork for him because he hurt so bad. At one point, he could no longer stand or sit, so he had to lay down on the floor at the back of the waiting room. I went to the desk and asked
"How long until my roommate can get a room? He is lying down on the floor back there."
Their response...
"He can't lie down on the floor."
This response really bothered me. So I fired back with...
"No... He CAN'T stand up, and he CAN'T sit down. You just don't WANT him to lie down. Now when can he get a bed?"
Their response...
"Soon."
Well, obviously I didn't buy that answer, since that's what they had been saying for the past 3 hours. So I ask...
"Well, can I at least have a pillow or blanket for him to use for now?"
to which they responded
"Sure... I'll be right back."
Then about an hour went by where they just left the window of the ER unattended. They brought no pillow or blanket. When they finally came back, they had a room for my friend. I was pretty pissed, and I wasn't even the one with the stone.
Anyway, this really relates more to my hatred of ERs than kidney stones, but whenever I am reminded of this I get pretty irritated. Hopefully no one here has to put up with the same BS.

My condolences to you on this situation.
I hope it passes quickly and painlessly.
I suspect that there may be a dietary change coming, and this will probably include beer.

I had them once back in '99. Worst pain i've ever delt with. I wound up passing mine 12 hours after the pain started. Haven't had one since. [knock on wood]
Good luck Trev.

Wow TB, that is awful! I hope you pass it/them and are done with it quickly. What causes that? All I know about it is that I had a boss one time who was somehow predisposed or for whatever reason would get them frequently (once or twice a year I think). Nasty stuff...

Speaking of shudder, you might won't to make sure you have someone who you don't mind seeing your ding dong around when you pass them.

I hear they are having a bit of success breaking up stones using sound waves.

sorry to hear you have them... some people only get them once, while others are "stone formers" and get them continuously.. miserable. it is not always diet that is involved although depending upon the type sometimes they will make dietary rec's..
for the time being keep yourself flushed out with water as much as possible (not beer, please!!) and that tends to get them out of your system. sometimes it is a large stone which has little pieces break off and pass. some of those they break up with lithotripsy (sound waves) which replace the need for surgery in many cases. some cannot be freed or smashed that way and people end up needing surgery... if you fall into the latter category you will need to have it done because nobody can put up with the agony of a blocked ureter and it can go on to infection or kidney failure.. if it is that bad, it will force you to do the right thing.
most of the time there is some bleeding associated with them, but it is mild.
it can also signal that another one is coming or that you have just passed one..
webmd has a pretty good over view of the condition.
for the future, you might want to think about really keeping yourself well hydrated in sports because there is some thought that dehydration causes precipitation of crystals and leads to stones. again, keep things flowing and it helps..
you have my best wishes for your return to good health...PM me if you have more questions and i will answer them as best as i can

Thanks for the concern guys,
I passed it Tuesday night, luckily without incident. It just came right out. That was the worst 6 days of my life it seemed. I couldn't keep anything down and ended up losing around 7 pounds. I really hope I'm in the category of only getting them once.
I got extremely backed up on work for some classes I was taking and the next day and a half after passing it I was in marathon mode, working my arse off.
When it first started last Thursday with the pain in my back, I was thinking one good fart and I'd be ok...lol. Oh how I was wrong.
My question is has anyone ever had a kidney stone? I hear they are extremely painful to pass
TB, I've had kidney stones 3 times and I am only 27 years old. Actually, I have them now. The first time I had them I was about 20 or 21. The pain was sharp and woke me up during nights, but I never had any vomiting. I got the ultrasound treatment and, I can't lie to you, it hurts. What hurts even worse is when you have to urinate and get rid of the sones.
The second time I had them I didn't even go to the doctor cuz I instantly recognized the pain. I decided to try homeopathy tea herbs and, although it took longer to cure, the treatment was easier, less expensive and much less painful. Right now I am suffering from the same pain in my kidneys (its not nearly as bad as the first time) and I've already bought the homeopathy tea and am drinking it regularly.
I'm not saying it's right for everyone, but I suggest at least checking it out. Either way, best of luck and get well soon! :)
