...for Redskins" - Mark Maske article from the W. Post.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/blog/2006/06/16/BL2006061600610.html?nav=rss_sports

He was hurting at the end of last season, and his play in the regular season finale and the playoff opener was dreadful.

He wasn't as dreadful as his receiving corps (minus Moss), IMO. That said, Mark's got to be thinking this is his final shot at leading his team to a Super Bowl Championship.

After getting us back to the postseason last season, creating go-to weapons in Moss and Cooley, and calmly and confidently leading our team while silencing the majority of us who were asking for his head just a year earlier, I am completely willing to support Mark as our starter going into the season.
Our running game, and Saunders' combining protection with aggression will be key to Brunell's health and effectiveness...

...and I'm looking forward to every minute of it.;)

that was a really great article, maske made an honest assessment all around.

The brunell issue is right on in my mind. Brunell is great when he is healthy but clearly shown last year a tweak to his bad knee throws his whole game off. I hope he stays healthy although I am excited to see cambell. I think they should give brunell minimal reps in pre-season. He looked good last year in pre-season, why not let the vet sit and give cambell time and save brunell for regular season.

Jason was down here this week coaching a mini-football camp for little kids. A local news crew caught up with him and he said he's studying the new offense, and he's expecting to play a lot in preseason. He said he's aware that some day it will be "his" offense, and he's preparing himself for that day. I wish I could find a link to the interview, but the news station didn't post it.

Ok, this might be the plethora of rum and beer talking, but...

Are you sitting down?

I believe Campbell is capable of winnig with this team a-la Ben Faceishamburger and Tom Brady.

Brunells's injury is a small blessing in disguise.

(I love the Williams quote, Smoak!)

We're thinking along the same lines re: Jason Campbell. When he played at Auburn, my reaction was "He has to be the biggest QB in school history." The man was huge, compared to past QBs down here. During his undefeated season his senior year, he was like a serious machine every Saturday. All business.

I trust Gibbs and company. They'll know when he's ready. I sure hope he has a great preseason. It will give me new avatar fodder! :)

Short article with some good tidbits:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/06/16/AR2006061601498.html

Mark Brunell's finger:

"It's getting better, and luckily this thing comes off in three days," Brunell said yesterday. "I'm looking forward to having the opportunity to work with the new receivers. Missing this is no fun."

Brunell on David Patten:

Brunell added that he was impressed with wide receiver David Patten's offseason workouts. Patten will be in fierce competition with fellow receivers Antwaan Randle El and Brandon Lloyd for playing time. "He's always had a great attitude. I'm sure he didn't like the addition of two new receivers in the offseason, but he's been working real hard," Brunell said.

Randy Thomas ahead of schedule:

Right guard Randy Thomas, who broke his leg last December against Dallas, took part in more drills than Gibbs had expected

Maybe he can step up after tweaking his knee.. like some QB Doug Williams, in some big football game

brunell is obviously dependent upon getting his legs into his throws. without healthy legs both past seasons have demonstrated that brunell lacks both accuracy and strength.. i worry less about his finger injury than i do about him getting another leg injury this year... that will be a key to how far the skins go

Brunell has to be 100%. basically, if anything is wrong, whether it be his elbow, knee, hamstring, or whatever...he drops off dramatically. that is just his age showing. when he's 100%, he's a totally different person. that being said, it's a long season and few QB's start every game and take every snap. i am hoping he will have great protection and in some games the team will be able to get a big enough lead to let him rest and give some clean up snaps to Collins or Campbell just to preserve Brunell for the long run.

with all said and done, i have to say that i love brunell's attitude. MB just wants to win; he doesn't whine, he doesn't complain, he is just a old school, first-rate football player.

he won't come out voluntarily... but, he has to know his value to the team
is directly linked to his health. hopefully, he allows himself to be taken out
in games that aren't close... and hopefully we have a few blowouts to permit him to do so...

Smoak, I've got your back on this one! I truly believe that Campbell would be capable of leading this team. We have all the weapons, all the coaches, and team chemistry out of this world. The players on this team will carry one another through the tough times. I would like to see JC play, but only when he's ready. I think that we could end up seeing JC sooner, rather then later!

I understand what your saying. I'm just saying that I feel confident that if Campbell had to play, because Brunell went down to injury, that he could lead us to victory with all of the talent & leadership that he has around him.

Yeah I will really be watching JC in camp and preseason more than any other player. I hope I still feel as confident after the preseason, but as of right now I don't think he'd hurt us at all.

Definitely will be glued to everygame during preseason. The coaches have said that JC will be receiving most of the snaps during those games, so we should be able to really see what we have. I think that we'll alll be really surprised at what we see & more confident then ever.

I completely agree as long as people do not just look stats. I am more concerned about the little things now. I want to see his poise, footwork, release, timing, and most importantly decsion-making skills.

The stats will come, but I'll be thrilled if I see a guy who I think can consistently distribute the football to guys who can make plays. We don't need a Peyton Manning. I'll take a "Brad Johnson type" any day. Obviously BJ's physical skills have eroded, but the guy was a very underrated QB in his day.

Smoak we must have the same thought patterns, because that is exactly how I was thinking. If he puts up BIG numbers, then that is just beautiful. But I just want him to come into the game and be able to manage it. If he can do that, then everything else will fall right into place. This team doesn't need a QB that can takeover a game, but only one that can manage the game and distribute the ball.

I'm right there with you all the way. With a defense like this one, the QB doesn't need to feel pressured to sling the ball all over the field. It is about fist and foremost making good decisions and then putting your explosive playmakers in position to make BIG plays.

I went back and watched some of the highlight clips of Moss floating around and he did some things that we really unbelieveable last season!!! A QB doesn't need to be perfect on a deep ball to that guy b/c he has got some amazing body control and ability to adjust to the ball in mid air.

Moss was outstanding last year. You couldn't have asked for a guy to do more. He put himself out there on a couple of throws, but he took it for the team. I think that he just wanted a team to give him a real chance and allow him to show what he can do. I don't expect his play to drop off at all, it could very well pick up for him even more now!

But back to the subject at hand, your very right our QB's just need to not mistakes & let our talent level do the rest.

here is another article about brunell. it talks about his excitement for the new WRs and offense. and also how the coaches express a lot of confidence in brunell.

“We know what this guy can do,” Gibbs said. “We’re counting on that.”
