Redskins' Line of Work
After Loss, Team Signs DT Cannida, Considers Re-Signing Wilkinson

By Mark Maske
Washington Post Staff Writer
Monday, August 11, 2003; Page D01The Washington Redskins decided yesterday to sign free agent defensive tackle James Cannida. Club officials hoped the move would help to bolster the interior of a defensive line that struggled to stop the running game of the Carolina Panthers in the Redskins' 20-0 loss Saturday night in their exhibition opener.

Cannida, a five-year NFL veteran who spent last season with the Indianapolis Colts, was traveling to the Washington area last night and, barring any last-minute snags, should sign a one-year, minimum-salary contract and be on the practice field this afternoon. Team officials also continue to contemplate the possibility of re-signing Dan Wilkinson, the veteran defensive tackle who was released by the team on the second day of training camp.Read the rest right HERE. All I know is he worked out for the team the same day as FAD. I saw him inside the building watching the practices.

NO one has yet to offer BD over 1 million yet. I can see him signning with the Pack for less than the 2 million he was going to make here though. That is a team that will make the playoffs.

I hope Snyder calls up Big Daddy to bring him back to the table. Based on the other night and what we know of our bunch, we desperately need someone around his skill level.

Uggh I cant believe we are reduced to begging for BD services.

What other semi-big name DT are out there??? I've heard Kieth Traylor's name tossed around from Chicago. He's bigger than BD and faster from what I've heard. I like BD but I just don't think he'll play his heart out for the burgundy and gold anymore. He'll just get his vet min. contract and run w/ it.

Welcome to hR Redskinmayhem, glad you joined us. The only way to get good help now would be to trade people or picks. Or, we could wait until late in the preseason. That's probably not a good idea.

cannida? That makes me excited. Going into week two of pre-season and he was still unemployed? Hmmm.

ive heard of him, but i dont know squat about him. i guess the defensive coaches realized right away that we need help on the D Line instead of waiting 2 or 3 games.

Is that fat tub of goo Grady Jackson available? If so, let's forklift him on to a flatbed and drive him up here!

I have my Class A license...does anyone have a tractor with a flatbed? lol

Seriously, I'd like to trade something for him. I don't know how much I'd be willing to trade, but I would welcome our FO to look into it.

He's got legal trouble. The Fridge was teaching Physical Education in an Illinois public high school when he accidentally inhaled two students and swallowed them in under 12 seconds.

Wilkenson is supposed to workout for the Packers today but I'm not sure we have the cap room to sign him. With that said the Packers are still bringing him in and must have a plan.

I've read a lot of the posts here and get the impression that he wasn't very good in the locker room and has been called a 'cancer' on the team.

I know he had a down season last year....what do you think that was all about?

CarMike
08-12-2003, 07:26 AM
LMG, I guess you could say that was his job. With Gardener making most of the plays, its hard to tell if that was the game plan or not. Gardener just our performed him last year.

I don't remember him being a "cancer" in the locker room. At the same time I didn't really pay close attention it.

As for the Fridge, the last time I saw him was on TV participating in the eating contest. Can you believe he only ate 7 hot dogs in like 10 minutes or something? That little dude from Japan ate like 40 or something.

It was funny Mike to see that little guy tear up the fridge in an eating contest.

LMG... I personally do not think Big daddy was as bad as some people here. I would not mind him coming back

I don't know much about him, but I do know that in something like 10 games, 7 starts last year he had DOUBLE the tackles Big Daddy had with 16 starts.

I know there are roles etc. but shouldnt a DT have more than 20 something tackles in a 16 game season? Wish I understood the position more, but just from the tackle stat it doesnt sound like we are missing anything with Big Daddy gone, that doesn't mean we have a DT solution, I think it just means that BD is not a solution.

It's pretty slim pickings this time of year. Need to wait for the first cut down date......although, I hear Big Daddy Wilkinson is still available....what do you think about him?

Where the heck is Santana Dotson when you need him:D ???? Well, I guess I'm in the minority, but I really don't wan't Wilkinson back. We gave him an excellent offer and he spat at it. I don't know what the alternatives are, but Cannida is better than Jace Scayler (I think), who we just cut, so in essence we have "upgraded" a bit................at least from a DEPTH perspective. I can't wait until we play New England. One more poor performance from the DL (pre-season or not).......and I am going to start to worry. Remember the Martyball pre-season and how we began the regular season? JMO.

Let's not forget, our problem wasn't with his play as much as his contract. (not saying he played very well, just saying our beef was the money!)
I'd take him back for 1 mil a year or close to...wasn't he getting 4 or 5 mil a season?

I don't expect much from Cannida, but he's probably better than some of the guys we got. I have mixed feelings about bringing Big Daddy back. He's servicable but not much more but that's probably a step up from what we have. I know it's early yet but I'm starting to think my judgement of Noble being better off as a bench player might be correct. We dug ourselves a hole at tackle which we probably aren't going to make it out of.

By the way Grady Jackson is not available last I knew. He came into camp somewhat in shape and the Saints seem to want to keep him.

I would think the opposite...he would sign a 1 year deal, meaning he'd want to re sign with someone aftre the season and would have to perform to make good money.

Skins57

I agree jsarno, if we signe him to a one year deal and hewnted to omve on he would play as hard as he ever has to get a good contract next year. The thing is a DT at or near 30 is going to get huge deal unless you are one of the elite and BD is not near that list

I would assume he'd leave for Green Bay before he re signed with us after all this with his contract.
