What's the story with the patch on the Redskins jerseys this year? Are they for Dan Snyder's dad?

Good question. Anyone have an upclose pic of it?

Yes, it's for Daniel Snyder's father that passed away during the off-season.

I know it's Dan's team but that is a bit much. Most fans don't even know his dad's name.

Its Dan's team...he can do as he pleases, IMO. Don't forget that it was his father who introduced him to the Skins...30 years ago.

From what I understand hios dad was a integral part of the ownership, being of of Dan's most high confidants. I think it is appropriate.

agreed 100%, and I'm not sure it wasn't a players idea for Dan.

Honor him some other way. He didn't do enough for the team to warrant a patch on the uniform.

I guess hey was following up like the Bears did when George Halla died, and the Bears wore the GH emblem as well, but hey, George PapaBear Hallas carries more weight in the NFL than Danny Boy's father....

I have a pict but I will have to figure out how to post it, also it is in b\w, but it has the Redskins logo on top with GSS under it and on the bottom it says "Hail to the Redskins". The picture I have is in the 03 media guide and the caption says that the players will wear it during the 2003 season in honor of Gerald S. Snyder

you can include the pic as an attachment to your post. Don't use quick reply though.

Hey the guy was a part owner of the Skins...I don't mind if the Team pays respect to him that way. Its not like they are putting him in the ring or anything like that.
RedskinsDave

My problem is a patch like that is usually reserved for honoring a guy like Halas, not a minority owner.

I thought so too. Don't they have to get permission from the NFL to include patches on the unis?
AGibbsGirl

Let 'em use it! I'd do the same if I could for someone I loved.
Sonny & Geoge talked about it on game night, they seemed to think it was appropriate.

I bet George got his name wrong too. I have no problem with it. I think it would be an honorable way to be remembered.

You guys keep saying this...What was George doing that I missed? I know there was that whole #38 x 2 discussion with George and Sonny, wasn't there really two #38's? or were they just ragging on George?http://www.the-jungle.net/emotes/gruebel.gif

I think it is ok to wear the patch. It's my guess that Dan wasnt the one who came up with the idea. Maybe a coach or player. They should consider themselves a family so I think its appropriate.

The fact is the man was a part owner of the team. For those that don't know, Snyder's sister is also technically an owner of the team also. I don't think that you can say that he didn't do enough because his money was involved in the day to day operations as well, maybe not as much as Dan's, but at the end of the day money is money. I also would venture to say that Gerald probably advised his son on alot of the decisions that he stepped to the fore front and announced that the team would be implementing.

When I first saw it i thought he actually had a sponsor on the uniforms...

I'm surprised at some of the comments made on this thread. Its Dans father for goodness sakes. It doesn't matter how much he had to do with the team. He did have a part in it.
If Dan wants to honor his father, then I'm ok with it.

We'll have to agree to disagree then. I think if fans of our own team much less fans of another have to ask what it is there for then it doesn't belong.

Apparently Don and Mike agree with me that Gerry has no business having a patch on the uniforms. They agreed that he did nothing more than own a piece of the pie and provide the needed DNA for Dan's mother to give birth to our little owner. Dan takes JKC's name off the stadium yet his dad gets a frickin patch. I sure wish I owned the team because my old dog Bear derserves to be honored since he did bark when the Skins scored.

RedskinsDave ~ It Sounds like your "issues" with the patch run deeper with your dislike for Snyder.

No, I just don't like the way Snyder treats everything as if it's only his and yet we're the ones who pay for it.

You do realize we are talking about a "patch" on a uniform, right? Not about ticket prices, or the cost of a beer at Fed Ex, or the cost of parking at Fed Ex...etc.

My ticket prices went up four dollars this year. I wouldn't mind except that WE FINISHED WITH A LOSING RECORD!
RedskinsDave

If you want to talk about prices, that's a whole other issue. I spend more time defending Snyder than I do lambasting him but sometimes I feel like he thinks the team is his toy and the 80,000 of us who pay ridiculous ticket prices are just afterthoughts.

I agree w/ you. I think it's a little bizarre and I'm surprised the NFL would allow it, they have final say on UNI patches.

Give him time, he will. Unfortunately I think this will become a trend in the NFL.

So that I'm clear here as to what the problem with this is, those that oppose this feel that only the principle owner should be honored with a patch after they die?
Jack Kent Cooke put patches of the new stadium on the jersies for crying out loud. I have not seen any other team that opened a new stadium in recent memory do anything like that, yet I never heard any type of outcry about it. That IMO was ridiculous.

When have you ever heard of a relative of an owner being honored in any way? What's next, when his cousin dies you'll have his/her initals as well?

That's different. At least the Stadium has something to do w/ the team while Danny's father doesn't have anything to do w/ the team. That pacth was probably overboard as well but at least it had something to do w/ the team.

Not to add fuel to the fire but I finally got the picture scanned, also, I was not aware of Dan's fathers involment until this year but I read in an article that he was a big reason that Bruce stayed on for one more year. Not sure where I read that or if it deserves recognition but thought I would pass it along.

No, that's simplifying it a bit. I think that anyone or anything should have great significance in order to get a patch on the uni. I can see the stadium a little more but I still didn't like it.

I agree completly. And Again, everyone is attacking Snyder like this was his idea. Until you have some proof that it wasn't a player or someone else who came up with that(It was probably Lavar) then don't attack snyder. I mean sure he had the last call for the 'Skins, but that doesn't mean he came up with the idea.
And it's no different then if a player dies or a players family member dies and they were something for that individual. It happens all the time.

I sure hope a bunch of players don't lose family members, that jersey could get pretty heavy with all those patches.

Not Funny, they don't always wear patches, a lot of times they will wear armbands, my point is they do something to commemorate those people alot of times.

Not really. This is the first time I have ever heard of a relative of a team associate being honored w/ a patch or an armband(Can anyone think of any?). I've only see teams where patches or armbands when it's a player, Coach or someone in management.

If you want to give your opinion of Skins related topics, please study a little before you do. Gerald Snyder was a part owner of the team, hence me asking the question about principle owners. This wasn't Snyder trying to honor his distant cousin that he was extremely fond of. He actually had a stake in ownership.

He was still just a minority owner for three years and does not deserve a patch. It's a simple case of deserving it and he didn't.

And when you buy an NFL team some day, you can be the once who decides who deserves it and who doesn't.
Not such a simple case now, is it?

Ironically I own a team that I treat very similar to the way Dan treats the Redskins except mine is a fantasy team and I've won alot since I've owned it.
