The Denver Post confirms the report that punter Todd Sauerbrun will be suspended four games for testing positive for ephedra.
At this point, we expect profootballtalk.com to break news before big media. Sauerbrun should be able to participate in training camp, but will probably miss the first four games of the season barring appeals.

Why is a punter using ephedra? He was also one of the guys named in that whole Panthers scandal for steriods. What gives? Maybe Frost should look into some performance enhancers.

It's not a steroid. It would be better described as a type of adrenaline or an upper. I'va taken ephedra when I work out, albeit in very low doses. It can also be found in ma huang and other normal herbal supplements. The only reason I think it should not be legal is that it can be dangerous when taken in large doses because it does increase heart rate and your metabolism. Honestly though, I get a similar effect from an energy drink.

I used to have a roommate in college that wrestled and he used to take that stuff like candy to help him lose weight. I wonder if his heart has exploded yet...

Yeah, if we make it to any type of state playoffs here, they test us for all of that, and red bull could really screw us over. No more wings for ryflan.

ephedra ?? that is what used to be in sudafed... ridiculous.. might make some difference to a swimmer in a sprint, but i cannot see it doing anything for a punter.. again, ridiculous..

What was in Sudafed was the manufactured version, pseudoephedrine, which is the base ingredient for crystal meth. That is why is is off the shelfs now. Ephedra has the same chemical structure as meth.
I agree that it has little to no benefit to a punter but it is banned and there are no exceptions.
Besides the amphetimine effect, it also raises your core body temperature. That is what is believed to have killed Korey Stringer [Vikings OT] during training camp a few years back and other athletes at various levels.

I know what you're saying but you also have to remember that Sauerbrun was also implicated in the steroid investigation with the doctor from the Balco labs.

Why a punter would need any of these drugs is beyond my understanding but it appears that Sauerbrun is another Romanowski.
