The Bengals have apparently gone out on a limb and taken Virginia LB Ahmad Brooks in the third round of the supplemental draft.

I don't even know what to say at this point. What in God's name is going through Marvin Lewis' head? Does he have an obsession with building a team of convicted felons? I guess it's appropriate that they'll be wearing orange.

it does not surprise me one bit he was taken in that round.. but i do think that marv is really loading up on miscreants.. maybe they can apply for halfway house status...

hopefully for the bengals brooks stays in shape and can absorb the defensive scheme quickly. They just got 1st round talent for a 3rd rounder and probably made 49ers fans make the idea of slashing their wrists more and more of a realistic possibility (everybody at my job likes the niners... no idea why, but now I like to make fun of them).

I'm shocked the Bengals took him. As if they needed more problems. I hope Marvin Lewis can straighten this guy out, because he is a talent.

I'm not too shocked by this when you consider where Marvin made a name for himself... the Baltimore Jailhouse Ravens.

Consider me ill-informed but what is Brooks supposed to have done that is so bad? All I know about the guy is that he was supposed to be some physical freak, monster LB who could play the 3-4 at a very high level. He is supposed to have "violated team rules". Anybody have more than that?

He got kicked off of UVA -- I believe it was for drugs -- and he also had a cookie dough eating problem that made Lavar look like Nicole Richie.

Right, he was supended after the season with the option to return for his senior year. He chose not to. So whatever he did it wasn't enough for Al Groh to permanently suspend him or suspend him while he could still win games for Groh or such that he was in court over it. I still don't get it.

I do love the Paris Hilton line, though. :)

Was there any other team that wanted to draft him as well? If not why didn't they just wait for him to slide further down into lower rounds? that way they wouldn't be loosing their third.

You guys know anything about that?

I dont think it works like that.

From my understanding, each team bids a draft choice that they cannot change. Whoever uses the highest draft pick wins the rights to the player.

The supplemental draft goes round by round with each team getting ten minutes to decide if they want to bid that draft pick on an available player. If more than one team bids on a player in the same round, then the team that is placed higher in the league's pre-determined order is awarded the player.

So there is no way to know who the next team that would have taken Brooks is. The Bengals must have been convinced that he wouldn't have lasted into the fourth round.

Marvin drafted Brooks in the suplimental draft with the prior knowledge that Odel Thurman would be suspended by the NFL for the first four weeks of the season due to either failing or missing his drug test.

The folks on NFL Radio seem to believe this could set up Ahmad Brooks starting as early as week one to be a replacement.

Tic, Toc, Tic, Toc....

Someone from VA called in on NFL Radio and said he watched Brooks work out at the Hargrave Military Academy last month and he looked "chiseled and better than ever". Apparently he lost 30 lbs in 10 weeks.

If the "old" Ahmad Brooks shows up to Bengal training camp without the baggage, then Marvin got himself a steal.

It is actually done differently. The draft order is the same as the previous draft. But in the supplemental draft the teams places their pick they would select him in into an envelope and give it to the league. And the team that selects him with the highest pick gets him.

That is just the first part of what happened.

At first he was suspended and then he was later able to rejoin the team. Then once he rejoined he ended up failing a drug test and was later dismissed from the team completely.

Correct. Groh already gave him a second chance. ITs not everyday Groh gives you any more chances than that...

that was where most draft services had him going. i do not think 3rd round is much of a surprise, do you ??

PFT described the draft order as a weighted lottery based on the 2006 draft order. I don't know the formula but they listed the order on their rumor mill.

It was much different from the order of the last draft. For example, San Francisco picked first, we picked 30th. Denver picked last.

Scroll down on the link to see the order according to them.

Now bengals seem to be the new team, wanting all of the convicts on their team.

I think it maybe too many people with character issues or caught up in legal trouble for marvin to handle. I don't know how the team chemistry would be.
