View Full Version : Faith in Sultan????????

In hearing from several Redskins fans, many (as I) loved the way that Sultan McCollough showed up last saturday. The man truly ran "with a purpose".

With that in mind, who is convinced that he can be effective against the 1st stringers? Is there indeed a roster spot for him. Is there anyone out there that ALREADY prefers him to Watson??? I know it's a lot to ask after only ONE pre-season game, but I have already heard some interesting opinions about this guy.

ps. Is there anyone out there that followed his college career?? If so, give us your perspective as well. Thanks.

The only way to see if he can play against starters is to actually watch him do it. If he doesn't get the chance to do it in the preseason, it probably means he gets manhandled by the Redskins defensive starters in practice.

And man, if our guys man handle him, he must really be bad......j/k;)

I like him, but i'm not too confident in him. I didn't even get to see the game, but i figured he'd get a chance to play. He's got big play potential, but i'm not sure if it's enough to make the team. Personally, i'd like him on the team, not just the PS... but i'm enamored with speed. He'll get a look at better D's and we'll take it from there.

Quote from Spurrier on Sultan:

"We weren't thinking that, but that's the way sports is, the way life is," Spurrier said. "A guy gets an opportunity and you see what he can do. He's going to get an opportunity this week."

Looked sweet - so I say you got to find out where he drops off before (if) you cut him. So far he's Aced the elementary school crowd. Move him up to the 2nd quarter & see how he does with the high school crowd. If he's still Acing it, he's got to take a shot with the starters in the 1rst quarter before the end of preseason. That's what preseason is for.

man, i hope he makes our team and becomes the diamond in the rough, meaning HE STARTS AND GETS A 1000 yards rushing and recieving(yeah im dreaming) but i would like him to do something where we can all be proud and find us a TOM BRADY or something....

I had heard somewhere after we signed him as a free agent that he was very easy to tackle, as in could be tackled by a grade schooler.

Anyone else hear this?

Not sure about the tackling... i know that arms wise, he was one of the strongest backs in the draft... 25 times of 225 or something...

Had one good game and several practices. Looking at what's coming out of Redskins Park (on the evening news), we will see more of him this week. .......... IMO, SS pumping him up to push the others - don't see him making this team unless he does great on special teams too. ....... BUT then again, IF the kid does really well this week, do we try to use Betts or Watson in a trade for a DT.

I liked what I saw from McCollough, but am not ready to jump on any bandwagon. I'm not a big scat back fan. Especially when playing the Eagles, Giants, and Cowboys. As I've blabbed before, Ladell is our best 'bet(ts)' at having a productive every down type guy. Based on the final two games of last year, I believe he can run the ball up the gut effectively as well as bust long gainers to the outside. If he gets back on the damned field, that is.

Hailyeah, I tend to agree with all that. Betts really needs to get back on the field.

IMO all this talk about a guy nobody ever heard of, who had some success in one pre-season game against guys who will probably be cut, underscores our RB problem.

Its all about special teams for many of these "new" guys. He can run his heart out, but if he is not going to contruibut on Sts, he is not going to make the 53 man roster.

Yep, I've been commenting about STs with the last WR spots as well. Can't overlook coverage per usual.

This is from today's Post. I guess the Ball Coach thinks that if Sultan can contribute on special teams he has a very good chance of making the roster. At USC he was overshadowed, especially last year by Vargas (now in Oakland) but was known then for his incredible speed. Did some kick returning his last two years. Here is a link to his career numbers at USC.

Well if it's up to who can contribure on special teams... there should be plenty of room for McCollough (& even Cloman, and a mess of others, considering how the play.

I went to USC and followed Sultan's career closely. He was an amazing back at SC, but got beat out half way through his senior year by Justin Fargas (of the Raiders now). Sultan has amazing speed and is not easy to be tackled. The knock on him is his temper - he supposedly is not a very friendly guy.

I predicted immediately after Sultan was signed that he would beat out Watson, and I still think he will.

Hey uscskin, how was he at catching the ball out of the backfield? I realize he doesn't have receiver size but he has speed and if he's got the hands then he could be a nice compliment as an H-Back/Larry Centers, purely receiver, out of the backfield or in the slot.

At USC, you had to know how to catch the ball out of the backfield. That is a trademark of Norm Chow. Sultan thrived, and was always a threat to break loose. He was a member of the 4 x 100 relay team, which I think did very well on a national level.

Really? That's be nice, because I think Watson & Betts might get us through the season, but I think they'd get chewed up & spit out in the playoffs. I'm hoping one of the new RBs breaks out.

Hell, if he performs well enough we'll at least have some trade bait in Watson and Betts for a DT.

Thanks uscskin!!!! This is the kind of report I was looking for when I started this thread. I really didn't know much about him (by living on the EAST Coast.....not being a fan of SC, etc.). Sounds like he's a keeper. The knock I heard about him was that he was "easy" to tackle.....but you seem to disagree (and that's good).

I have been saying for some time that we need to keep 4 RB's and 6 WR. I don't think we need as many FB's and TE's in THIS offense. I know that Leonard Stevens plays BOTH, so that would free up an extra body. I would love to have Sultan make the roster. If so, I'm hoping we can still trade Watson (perhaps) and maybe a mid-level draft choice and get a quality DT!!!!!

I had always thought it was Sull-tan, like the Saudi Arabian kings, but found out it was actually Sool-tahn on Saturday. Anyone else disappointed by this?
