ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli reports the Dallas Cowboys have agreed to a new, six-year contract with TE Jason Witten. He was entering the final season of the original four-year contract he signed with the Cowboys as a third-round choice in the 2003 draft, and was scheduled to have a base salary of $1.573 million in 2006. The new contract is worth about $28 million-$29 million and includes a $12 million signing bonus.

Well to lock up a 24 year old player whos been to the pro bowl 2 times already for 6 years it takes quite a bit of money...... And yes it would of been smart for the redskins to already resign cooley.... with shockey gates and now witten all getting bigtime deals in the last several years hes probably going to be asking for just as much.

Expect roy williams to get a long term contract sometime nextweek also. Possibly bradie james.

More importantly this will be a base line for Cooley's extension. I expect a little less unless he makes the pro-bowl this year then expect I expect a little more.

Hopefully the Skins lock up Cooley after this year. That would make me very happy.

It'll be interesting to see what Roy Williams signs for. He probably wants close to Ed Reed money and if he gets it then the Cowboys are insane.

1. Looking at our needs for next year[putting on the prognasticator hat here], I think we will recruit in the DE, OLine, and CB areas for development and depth at these positions.

2. We also need to sign Rocky this year.

3. We are actually *UNDER* the cap limit going into next year.

Combine all 3 and this is what you get:

Use any remaining cap room this year to redo Cooley's contract. Plan on developing players in #1 through the draft and to aggressively rewrite Cooley's contract.

Here is a link that better defines the deal, the initial signing bonus is not 12 Mil but 6 Mil, with an additional 6 Mil due next year.

It still sets a high benchmark for what the Skins will have to give Cooley in the future and Cooley will be in his final year of his current contract in '07.

if cooley produces, that is simply what they will have to pay to keep him..another year like last year, and he will deserve witten type money

...... why? reed and williams have similair level of impacts for there teams. It would be well worth it for dallas to pay up for a great young player, person, and leader.

Well, first off Reed and Wiliams play two completely different positions, and Reed is a MUCH better player than Williams will ever be. This is not even open for debate. Reed is one of the best defenders in the league, Williams is one of the better safeties in the NFC.
