View Full Version : This 10-6 team and the 99 team
What 10-6 team had you more excited, this 10-6 team or the 99 10-6 team? Which was the better all around team? They both got to the second round of the playoffs, but which deserved it more?

the 2005 team deserved it more i think, i feel this team has a stronger bond than the 99 team and knows how to pick it up in crunchtime

I think the 05 season was more exciting in several ways. I wasn't too thrilled with B.Johnson at the QB position, but I do give him credit for winning the NFC East crown.
It was just more exciting to me when we had our backs against the wall and went on that 5 game win streak to steam roll into the playoffs, and get revenge on the Bucs in the first round. But during the process, Clinton Portis and Santana Moss both broke club records. And if it wasn't for Cooley playing that H-Back position, I think he would have broke the club record for most TDs caught by a tightend.
And lets not forget the two bombs we dropped on Dallas in week 2, and then swept them for the season. Yeah, O5 was definitely more exciting.

Hands down it is this team. I always felt the '99 team was a case of the blind dog findiong a bone and I never trusted Norv to make any noise in the playoffs. Also, this team played their best football down the stretch which gives hope for this season. I just hope we never have to do a 2000 vs 2006 comparison.

The '99 team had a horrid defense. About the only thing that team and this one had in common, besides record, was they both had good passing games that fizzled over the final 6-7 games and both teams offenses were carried by the RB down that stretch.

I think that if we did not suffer injuries to Thomas and then Brown last year's team had a real chance at going all the way into the SuperBowl, or at least past Seattle. The 99 team I always felt was a fluke. Making the playoffs never felt like an accomplishment more the relief of finally getting there. And I never connected with the team on a personal level. Besides Stephen Davis and Darrell Green I doubt I even liked any of the other players and some (Westbrook and Connell) I outright despised.
Give me last year's team any day of the week and twice on Sundays.

The 5 game winning streak was a real exciting time. I'm not quite sure how the 99 team did what it did, with Westbrook and Connell and Norv but they still won the NFC east and thats quite an accomplishment. I think the 05 team really got better with time since they got to gel, something I hope is not a problem with the 06 team.

I feel alot more confident going into this season with a certain Coach Gibbs as opposed to Norv Turner. This team is building on something special. This is a "team" and all around a much more well rounded team. I'll take the 05 team.

I refuse to be more excited about a Norv Turner coached football team than I am for a Gibbs team.

Yeah... I actually got to the point where I banned financial support of the Redskins (merchandise, tickets, etc) until they fired him. It made me sick that he was allowed to bumble through season after season until somehow he managed to ride Davis' coattails to a playoff run.

Norv was always good for disappointment kind of like all the years between Gibbs. His teams didn't play with spirit and really disappeared when the games counted most.
I love this team and thank Dan Synder for bringing Gibbs back.

I thought the 2005 team was a STATEMENT team. The only people really surprised they could do it, were people that didn't support the team as much. True some fans of the Skins doubted, but in that regard, it was due to the numerous "false" BIG seasons before. Nevertheless the 2005 team was the core Joe Gibbs was looking for. I really believe deep down, LaVar was not an intention for departure and AP surprised the staff on his demand, whether "business" or not. With that said, THIS is that team for what Joe Gibbs had hoped for when he returned.
The 1999 team lead by Tre Johnson, Stehpen Davis, Brad Johnson/Gus Ferotte, was a scrappy bunch, but in no way was as cohesive and consistent as this unit today. No way, no how.

Clearly the 2005 team. I was shocked that Norv got the team to the playoffs in 1999. The 2005 team just felt right, you know? Anything is possible through Gibbs, lol.

norv had a lot of talent in 99.. in fact norv had a lot of talent most of his regime. little character, but talent for sure.. few people did less with more year in and year out.

there is no doubt in mind that EVERYONE is going to say the current team and for good reason. the team and the organization's state is in such a better state right now. its funny you should ask this though, because i recently watched an old norv coached game from 2000 when we played TB in the regular season. it was a defense battle the whole way with a few good offensive plays (mostly notably, big country's 55 yard TD). we were up by 10 with 3+ minutes to go when the obvious happened, we let the game slip away in a normal norv way. we ended up winning in OT thanks to a deion sanders punt return, but that game just made me appreciate this team even more.

I think the gibbs thing makes the answer easy...though i still remember people giving me their honest fact that there was no way we made the playoffs when we had a few games left; "The giants are going to kill you"

The team of 05.
We have a great defense in addition to our offensive playmakers.

"What we do works."
Sure it does Norv....just look at the results. Give Al Davis credit....he only put up with Norv's ineptitude for two seasons.

In 1999, Brad Johnson was underappreciated, and in 2005 Mark Brunell was underappreciated by many Redskins fans (not so much by HR members). Both teams had decent offenses but the 2005 had a very good defense. I think the playoff win in Tampa was way better than the win over the Lions. I was at that Lions game, and it was pretty funny when the fight broke out. Still, revenge in Tampa was sweet! Swept Dallas. Last season could not have been much better IMO.

ARGGHH!!! That is what killed me for so long. Norv always seemed to do "just enough" to miss the playoffs and not get fired. How frustrating was that!?

I enjoyed the 99 team...especially early in the season when BJ was throwing those bombs to (gasp) Connell and Westbrook....I alse enjoyed watching Stephen Davis pile up the TD's (ahhhh....that first game against the Giants)....but compared to last years 10-6? No comparison....
I loved last season....the players....the results.....the fans...the energy....and hR...
Last year was oh-so-sweet....and this year is going to be even better!
Take care....

Most definately the 2005 season. That run at the end and the way we played our conference made it that much better than 99.

The 99 team was swept by dallas. An ex cowboy coach was the head coach. The greatest rivalry in the WORLD had been reduced to almost nothing(outside of the nations capital.EXCEPT where all us die hard redskin fans lived) by that point.
Dan,Vinny, and norvell where spending wildly on "WAY,WAY,WAY OVER THE HILL"freeagents. In an a misguided attempt to win the superbowl.
The O5 team swept dallas. Thus keeping them out of the playoffs. The greatest coach of all time is back leading this team. The rivalry is finally BACK getting the attention of the rest of the nation ,it is better than ever.
Dan,Vinny, and Joe are spending strategically on young proven freeagents in a attempt to win several superbowls.
HANDS DOWN IT IS NOT EVEN CLOSE.:Peace:

I wouldn't pee on Norv Turner if he were on fire. I try to suppress the memory of the days when his fate and mine intersected. Death to Norv! Death to his pets, his friends, and his major household appliances.
I think I prefer the 2005 team by a little.

Especially the way we swept them, and knocking them out of the playoffs to boot.

The 99 team clicked mainly because Brad Johnson and Stephen Davis had huge breakout seasons. This along with the fact that Westbrook actually stayed healthy and on the field a whole season. Awful defense. When teams started doing cover 2 on them consistently it all fell apart.
The 2005 team was built on a much better foundation for long term success. Even though they look similar in what they accomplished, I don't think they are very comparable.

2005 by a long shot. During the '99 season, we stumbled and fumbled our way into the playoffs, '05 brought a team together learning to play and rallying when the season was on the line. In 2000, Snyder and Norv tried to revamp the team again for another supposed playoff run, wereas Snyder and Gibbs kept most of the players and made improving pickups at WR and secondary. '99 was an accident, and '05 won't be.

I agree, but I would argue that the two most important factors were Tre Johnson staying healthy (not Westbrook) and Stephen Davis busting out. Go back and look at our success record in the 90s when Tre was in the lineup vs when he wasn't. Plus, Brad was a good QB in Minnesota. I was actually happy we got him, but a little frustrated with the price.

But that got all screwed up when we got Jeff George on the roster, lol!

Wouldn't it be great if Norv Turner was our coach again????:Padawan:
2005 team by a landslide. The 2005 team had a brutal schedule and went 10-6. The 1999 team had a pretty easy schedule. They could beat the hasbeens but did not step up in the big games (Except the Detroit playoff win and that year I believe Detroit was only 8-8)
IMO, if the 1999 team had a schedule like the 2005 team they would of never made it to .500 let alone the playoffs.

Thank God For Gibbs!!!

This team deffinately excites me more . . . a much better defense and lot of younger players should prove that last years 10 - 6 was a stepping stone, not the beginning of a land slide like it was in 2000 . . .
That being said . . . the 1999 team was a lot of fun to watch too . . . remember the game against Carolina . . . that was a blast . . . Carolina got off to a huge lead, Washington came back to take the lead only to see Carolina go up by 1 and then Brett Conway kicked the game winning field goal with 6 seconds left . . . Skins win 38 - 36
the offense was quite a bit better in 1999 than in 2005, but the defense was bad . . .
