PACKERS CLOSE TO LANDING BIG DADDY

A league source tells us that the Green Bay Packers are very close to landing defensive tackle Dan "Big Daddy" Wilkinson, who was cut by the Redskins on July 29.

PackerNews.com reports that Wilkinson was in Green Bay on Tuesday, and that contract talks were set to commence Tuesday evening.

The Packers desperately need Wilkinson, after nose tackle Gilbert Brown tore a biceps on Saturday night. He'll miss the entire 2003 season.

Wilkinson is being pursued by the Packers, the Lions, and the Redskins. 'Skins coach Steve Spurrier recently said he didn't expect to re-sign Wilkinson. The Lions, however, were expecting to receive a proposal from Wilkinson's agent on Tuesday.

The Packers reportedly have pitched to Wilkinson the idea of playing for a winning team, which in nine seasons with the Bengals and Redskins has been a generally foreign concept to him.

Sadly, the 'foreign concept' crack is accurate in regards to our Skins (as well as Cincy).

Once Gilbert Brown went down for the year with a biceps injury, the Packers were always the favorite to replace him with Wilkenson.

Yup, I knew when reading the Gilbert reports that any chances of re-landing Big Daddy were el Zippo!

Big Daddy will love it in Green Bay cause he won't get ripped on after a season of 17 tackles and 0 sacks. Believe it or not, he is not the missing link between the Skins making the playoffs or watching it on TV. I think guys will step up, someone always does.

Yeah he has been on some losing teams...and one has to wonder how much he contributed to that losing...all potential no results..that pretty much sums up BDW.

Good Riddence to our highest paid player on our roster this year!

He had what? 17 tackles and 0 sacks last year?

Cannida, the guy we just signed, recorded 17 tackles and 1 sack in 1/2 as many starts....

How is that for a comparison?

Interesting he is replacing a nose tackle, however, I don't believe it will be a "true" nose tackle position because the packers play a base 4-3. The reason I'm saying this is I believe big daddy hated the nose tackle position. As far as Green Bay being a winning team-they'll only go as far as Farve goes, not as far as big daddy goes.

Kelly - getting close to the season opener and you start stepping up the smack talk? :lol1: :D

Us "fools" will be laughing quite a lot come Sept 4 - don't worry there will be some laughter left to cheer you up !

BDW, on a serious note, was IMHO not ready to be part of the Redskins this year. GB may have gotten a body for Gilbert Brown but I seriously doubt they got a "player".
