Is it me, or are the better teams in the NFL supposed to face the worst teams from the previous year?
How come the Skins go 7-9 and have the 5th hardest schedule this seasons (.537)???? To put that in perspective, the Bucs (12-4 last season) are 4th with a .539 schedule. Tennessee is 9th (.523) and they were 11-5!!!
The Steelers were 10-5-1, and they have the 26th hardest schedule. (.473)
AFC representative Raiders have the 20th hardest schedule and they were 11-5, and most of the season they were picked as power rankings 1 or 2 best team.
The 49ers are freakin 29th (.451) and they went 10-6 last year.
The seahawks, who had the EXACT record the skins had last year have the easiest schedule this year (.443).
I completely understand division rivals, but some of this goes too far. The Texans (4-12) have the 7th toughest schedule! (.533)
The Bengals, worst team last year by far, have the 16th toughest schedule (.508)
WHO THE HELL MAKES UP THESE SCHEDULES?

Each team plays against 2 entire AFC and NFC divisions, plus 2 other teams who finisished at the same place in their division. We just got the 2 of the toughest divisions in football in the AFC east and NFC south. Bears and Hawks finished 3rd in their divisions same as we did. Only 2 games are made according to a team's performance the year before.

W/ the addition of Houston tney modified the sched formula. Now there are only 2 "open" games each year, games which are determined by your previous year's finish. The opponents have been determined for the next 10 years except those 2, it used to be there were 4 "open" games determined upon the previous year's finish.
Anyway, nowadays you never know who's going to suck and who's going to be good- things change so quickly.

JSARNO, I think the big problem is that we're due to face the AFC East this year and that division has no weaknesses.

i would say that the jets are the weak link of the afc east.
Spence

If so, they're the strongest weakest link of any division in the NFL. Last year, the worst team in the AFC East was the Buffalo Bills, who finished 8-8. Consider that. Every team in the division finished with a better record than the Redskins last year.

I dunno, a case could definitely be made for the NFC South being a stronger division now....

Yeah when i saw we had to gface the AFC East, i knew we were in for it, but then add in TB and NO, Philly twice, man, this schedule sucks. But as i said over and over and over again, regardless of schedule, this team has got to prove it can play with the big boys.
Joe--agreed. NFC South and AFC West are both tough divisions.

I believe our schedule is tougher than it should be but these are the breaks. Break it up, Break it up, Break it up, Break down. Damn, sorry got into bit of an old rap song there. Curtis Blow I believe.
Anyway, The Skins will be tested right out of the starting gates this season. Just about everybody we play was in the playoffs last year.

For what its worth, I would argue the AFC West is the toughest division in football. Last year the AFC West went head to head with the AFC East and the AFC West had a combined record of 10 - 7 against the East. The only team in the AFC West to have a losing record against the AFC East was the last place Chargers while the only team in the AFC East to have a winning record against the AFC West was the Miami Dolphins...
Considering none of the 8 teams in either division had a losing record, I found it laughable that neither division could field a Wild Card team. No question strength of schedule is a major factor for the majority of teams (though the Raiders played the toughest schedule in the NFL last year and still finished with home field advantage throughout the playoffs and went 5 - 0 against all AFC playoff teams)...
The only way to address this in my opinion would be to increase the playoff field. Its ironic that the 2 teams that finished in the 7th seed in each conference (Dolphins and Saints) went a combined 3 - 0 against the 2 Super Bowl teams... In a 16 game season, strength of schedule is too much of a factor if only 6 teams make the playoffs per conference... :(

It gets better - the schedule is front loaded. So we'll be facing the brunt of that 5th hardest schedule when all our pretty new parts are at their greenest. The going could get tough...
But it does makes you appreciate how much Marty sucked. He got a top 5 easiest schedule.
Hey, anyone remember when the Redskins went 10-6 and didn't go to the play-offs & Marty went 8-8 with Cleveland and went to the play-offs?

I don't want to be a pessimist, but I hope everyone remembers how tough the start of the '98 season (Trent Green's coming out party) was when we went 0-7 out of the gate.
I hope we are not looking at this type of scenario again.

Schedule IS tough but I wouldn't want it any other way. All of you know that if the Skins had an easy schedule, then everyone would be pointing to that as the ONLY reason playing good. Personally, I don't want to play anyone who was under .500 last year. If were going to be good, let's win against the BEST.

I'd take a so-called easy schedule any day. Maybe having a tougher schedule does help us out. Remember how we used to play to the level of our opponents back in the day.

If our opponents have a high winning % which they probably will, it also gives us a dissadvantage on draft day.

You never know these days...everyone was thought the Rams would be a force last year....These are the type of teams we will have to play in the playoffs so if we cant get a few wins in the reg season well then we don't belong in the playoffs.

No doubt about it, this schedule is a kick in the shorts. What bothers me is that we end up playing NE during the preseason when we play them later on in November during the regular season. How hard can it be for the NFL to schedule preseason games against teams you won't face at all? I realize that the playcalling will be vanilla so Spurrs won't give anything away, but it gives each team a heads up towards personnel and such that they wouldn't have otherwise.

Is that a random process??? Or is it, one year we have the east, next the west, next the central???? Who decides this?
I like the fact that we're playing tougher teams as well, you only get better if you play better opponants. So if we can survive the first month or so we could really do some damage by season's end.

Very good point. It does annoy me when that happens as well...I just hope our intellegence is smarter than theirs so we can be MORE prepared.

It rotates. One year the NFC East plays the AFC West. Next year the AFC North. Year after that the AFC South. Then the AFC East. Then it starts all over again with the AFC West again.

Tired hearing that we have a tough schedule and man it isn't fair. Bottom line is, if we can hang with those teams, if we are a play off contender, if we are as good as we think we are, then i guess we will be tested right away.

Yeah, but it's more fun to complain about it, that way if we don't so well, we have something to fall back on. :D

Well, I'm not sure. We played the AFC South last year and the AFC East this year, so it'll be the North or the West next season. Not sure which is scheduled for us.

Don't hold me to it - but a Ravens season ticket holder, was already talking about "the big game" next season. So I think its the AFC-north.

I would rather take the North over the West.

Supposidly the outline of the schedules are done 5 years in advance. The whole division has a hard schedule. Anyway i think the Skins play better aganist good teams. Always lose to teams we should beat...

while the jets are the weakest link in the AFC east, they aren't THAT weak.
They could be a VERY tough 7-9 or 8-8.
