View Full Version : should cooley change his number?

i was just wondering if cooley is giving any thought to changing his number.
in light of the fact that he has declared himself to be a tight end, i was wondering if he might make a statement to that effect by changing to a number in the 80's.
the only above average TE who has a number in the 40's that i can think of is dallas clark of the colts. one of the reasons that cooley got so little recognition for the pro bowl last year was that he was listed as a FB. changing to a number in the 80's might help get him some additional
recognition. making the probowl means extra money in his pocket and it might override his sense of identity.
anybody have any feelings on that??

interesting thought. i don't think he should do it. its not him or his number that needs changing, its the dang ballots. i think the fact that there is only one other "decent" TE is all the more reason for him to hold on.
maybe he can bring it into style like WR trying to take #s in the teens

He said in an interview that his hair was in a transition stage, and that he was going for a Country and Western mullet, but it was too short.I'm thinkin' the ol' Billy Ray Cyrus look.

I was disappointed when Sean Taylor changed his number just because you don't really see anybody else noteworthy with #36. #36 was Sean Taylor. I know it's silly, but there are so many DB's with the number 21 that it really dig bug me when he made the switch.
So no, I'd prefer not to see Cooley change to 88 or some other generic TE number. Considering how he strikes me as someone who likes to stand out as an individual I'd also be surprised if he did change his number.
All that said, obviously the guy wearing the jersey is more important than the number. Taylor's switch didn't seem too hinder his performance to much so I guess I could find it in my heart to forgive Cooley if he decided to change his threads. :)

I like the number and hope he doesn't change it.
He is gonna make #47 popular

the washington post just had an article posted on their website (from tomorrows print edition) where suanders called a play in which cooley RAN the ball.. he commented that it was important to keep players involved in the offense. saunders is unreal.. that gives opponents yet one more concept to worry about

conforming to what everybody else does in the league doesn't seem like Cooley's style. This is captain chaos, the man that seriously considers running around in a mullet one day and then reconsiders corn rows the next. Being different from all the rest of the cookie cutter tight-end numbers shows a lot of his unique personality.
Plus, if he keeps on playing like he's playing, his number is going to stand out in history. Like you said, who else in the league has a number in the 40s that's any good? I like it, he should keep it.

No. Absolutely not. It is disrespectful to fans that have already shelled out $$$ to buy your jersey.
Oh and nice one BNG!

I hope he does not change #'s. That number is becoming a fixture.

Frankie said she hasn't seen or talked to Cooley or Christie in a long time. She seems pretty obsessed with the guy she has.

It's individualistic and lots of people have shelled out to buy his jersey with #47. Why change?

I was actually afraid they were gonna force him to change his number, but it doesn't look like they will. I don't think lack of probowl recognition has anything to do with his number, just where his name is listed on the ballot.

I think its pretty cool that he'll be one of the few TE's with his number in the 40's. I say keep number 47 until he retires, then we can retire his number as one of the greatest redskins.

ive been waiting two years to see cooley get a hand off as i remember readin he got some in college, i hope to see it atleast once in a game this year, and now it seems more like a reality. i dunno cooley just seems to remind me of like a 'modern day john riggins' to this team. i also hope he keeps his #47

No. He should not change his number. I like 47.

Definitely stick with #47. It makes him much more recognizable. And he should grow his hair until we win the Super bowl.

I am in complete agreement with the majority here. He should definately keep the number. We all identify the number with him. Plus, it reminds me of Todd Christenson (#46 I think), who was a great TE.
i'd rather him change his shorts than his number...he was out there in butt/nut huggers a couple days ago and comcast kept following him around.

Yeah the dude is hilarious. He wants to turn his hair into a long mullet and grow a thick mustache.
I'd say keep the jersey number, because I like the 40's look on both him and Dallas Clark.

No, Cooley should not change his number.
But we should retire this thread. The off-season is done, my friends. And meaningless random threads like this are for the off-season when there ain't nuthin' to talk about.
ITs time for some football!!!

So your saying he should cut his hair around the middle or end of February? :D

That's a smokin' good idea!! Keep the 'fro alive, baby!!
And also keep the 47... that's who Cooley is now, and has been for 2 years. I, too, was afraid the NFL would want a number change, but I'm glad it hasn't happened.

god I hope not....(just bought his jersey)....
but also because I love his number... It sticks out among all other tight ends....
I don't see how this is going to help him get any additional recognition, nor do I see him ever collecting enough 'fan' votes to make the pro-bowl.... shockey and witten are always going to get a ton of votes....

I love TE's with numbers in the 40s, he should never change, I don't think that anyone should change their number after they have established themselves as a big time player. ST changed and I wasn't happy, now I don't care, but #21 is so common, it's not unique. He should've stayed #36.
Cooley's number in college was #88, but now that has gone to Fauria, I think Cooley should be happy to be so identified and #47 sticks out. Think there are only a few numbers that they still issue in the 40's. None are retired in the 40's, but they don't issue #42, #43, #44, and #49, so really it's a privalege to be in the Redskins Organization and wear a number in the 40's...

Yeah, I thought it was funny, but I wanted to put out there that I actually chatted with her about the subject. And I still maintain that Cooley chose the wrong one. Frankie is drop dead beautiful.
