Even if its the Raiders/Eagles, tonight officially kicks off the 2006 football season!
Talk about the game here. Here's to no injuries to the players. Again, even if it the Raiders/Eagles.

What are some things you'll be looking for tonight?
personally, i'll looking for the Eagles depth and how deep they'll be. Since the Starters will only play series or two, this will be a great chance to see how their bench will look this year.

CM -- On what channel will the game be shown? ABC or ESPN? I need to know if I should go to my moms for awhile...
I am really curious to see McNabb and the WRs. I also really want to see how the starting and back up o-lines look as well as checking out RBs. Basically I guess I am mostly interested in their offensive side of the ball where they are minus TO, but also and more importantly Childress.

The game is on NBC.
I'll be watching the Eagles offense pretty closely, mostly how mobile and accurate McNabb is and whether or not they choose to run the ball and how effective that is.
Something to watch for is that undrafted free agent Hank Baskett is starting at WR for the Birds. He's supposedly been a favorite target of McNabb so he's starting with Pinkston hurting. Gaffney looks like a simple slot guy, so I don't think they're interested in working him on the outside.
Hopefully the Raiders give a good showing and make the Philly faithful good and angry early in the year. The Game has my full support today!

Here in the Carolinas, its on NBC. So I'm sure it will be the same everywhere else.
And I agree. Their Oline will be the key. As it is in Dallass as well.

I want to see how the Eagles WR look and also see what kind of running game they "have". I am also going to see who gets placed as the slot, X, and Z receiver.
Lastly, I am going to watch the Philly D as a whole and see how Kearse and D Howard work together.
I really don't give 2 hoots about Oakland. They are still going to stink the AFC West up again this year.

I'm pretty interested to see how Michael Huff and Darnell Bing play. I know Huff should be starting and I'm fairly sure Bing is as well, so they should get some extensive playing experience. I'll be interested to see how well they react to the speed of the pro game.....
Oh, and that Randy Moss bites his tongue off. I wouldn't miss him never talking again.

It'll be interesting to watch if porter's dissatisfaction rears itself in the game.
If Porter wants to succeed in getting traded, he will need to produce on the field.

What is interesting is that, the Iggle receivers you see playing in the 4th quarter could very well be their starters on opening day. They simply have a big void there at that position, and I love it.
I think it will be nice to see Art Shell on the sideline again. He was a good coach that was overlooked after a nice original stint with the Raiders

The Raiders will be improved with Brooks at qb instead of Collins. I am not saying Brooks is a great quarterback. He ain't. But I think with what they've got there, he will do alright. I think Moss will be happier, too. Brooks will throw more desperation passes his way while Collins just seemed to flat-out ignore him sometimes...
So I guess I'll look to see if they are able to connect on a deep ball...
The Eagles, I don't know...I guess I'll see how they plan to move the ball...No run threat, no real receiving threat, I don't know...
Normally when you play a team with lackluster receivers, you put 8 in the box...But against the Eagles...8 in the box? Why? Philly has to try to establish a run game RIGHT AWAY or their receivers are going to have an even tougher time this year than most of us are expecting...

I want a meteor to strike the stadium.
Failing that, I hope someone hits a Raider hard enough for the psychic shockwave to travel through the ether and explode Norv Turner's head.
As far as the game, with Brown out with a Hammie and Pinkston out with Sean-Taylor-itis, I will be watching to see who on the Eagles can step up to be a ligit NFL WR. If the answer is no one, that can only be good for us.
Also, the revamped D-line for Philly will be an object of focus. They have a lot of talent on paper there. If it can learn to play well together it should be a terrific unt.
Still, a meteor would be great.

Yeah, for the Eagles, it might be the exact reverse methodology when defending against them. It's going to be a lot to closer to 7 in coverage and 4 up front when defending against Philly. Defenses are going to make Philly beat them on the ground and will try to take away the passing game. I can see a linebacker/safety on Westbrook and #1 CB on Brown and #2 CB on their TE, and man up on their other receivers.

Reggie Brown is supposed to play in the game. Their only receiver out is Pinkston, which seems like more of a blessing than a curse for them. That kid Baskett is supposed to start too.

Interesting commentary on Jerry Porter:
1. Nursing a calf injury and did not make trip.
2. Looking for a trade.
3. If he wants to be released, he needs to give back $4M of his signing bonus
4. Teammates want to know if he wants to be a Raider this year.
5. Might be in Al Davis' stinkhouse when he returns back to active status. He might find himself not active for many games this year.

I really think they are going to be ok at WR. Not great, but certainly able to move the football enough to win games. If they stay healthy and consistent, I think are a 9+ win team... Scary thought, but they have that cakewalk schedule in the early going and could easily have 5 wins in the first 7 games.

Agree Mike .............. Only paid attention to the first team units. As a division - the NFC East is just one NASTY group of teams. Although it probably won't happen - it wouldn't surprise me to see all the teams end up with winning records (or 8-8 at worst).
Oakland will not win six games this season. Then need a QB .... BADLY~!!

Questions for all my Redskin fans>
- Did the Eagles show enough running plays to prove that Andy means what he said? (36 passes/24 rushes)
- Did McNabb do a decent job in his one series? (109 QB rating)(3 for 3)
- How did the starting DL do with their 2 series? (-3 yds given up)
Note: Why do I have a suspicion the answer will be that the Oakland OL/DL stunk so it couldn't of been because of the Eagles pressure or performance. Also, keep in mind that running back performance is a product of a good OL and the Eagles have a good one this year. Andy has alot of confidence in his OL this year, therefore you'll see more running. I know it was just a couple of series that the starters played but its consistent with whats been happening in TC this year so far.
IMO, our second team did pretty well when you consider they were playing Oakland's first team when they got the TD. I think most of the kids did well.

I think you can't read that much from 1 preseason game. I think you're WAY too much into Reid's playcalling(and frankly, I hope they pound Westbrook and Moats--and Burkhalter for that matter), none of them have shown can they can take it.

The game was a real bore...so I didn't pay attention after the Eagle starters left the field.
But, I think the running game looked much better. Seems to me that the position battle at Center is going to end fairly quickly. There are simply more running holes when Jackson plays than when Fraley plays center. Regarding the play calling; Who knows if that ratio will stick. I have a feeling they will incorporate more runs per game this season, but not as much as they showed during the first series. Why would Reid show his hand so quickly?
Eagles' D line looked good...especially in the middle of the line. They really punched a hole through the Oakland interior line. But then again, the Raiders don't have guys like Randy Thomas who can absorb the contact. ;)
McNabb didn't play enough for me to have an opinion.

- Did the Eagles show enough running plays to prove that Andy means what he said? (36 passes/24 rushes)
-- No. I want to see the run pass balance against good teams and when the Eagles fall behind early. Can Reid stay with it down 10-0?
- Did McNabb do a decent job in his one series? (109 QB rating)(3 for 3)
-- Of course? Silly question. He looked great and maybe one day Philly fans will appreciate him.
- How did the starting DL do with their 2 series? (-3 yds given up)
Great. What are you tossing softballs just to get a pat on the back?
Note: Why do I have a suspicion the answer will be that the Oakland OL/DL stunk so it couldn't of been because of the Eagles pressure or performance. Also, keep in mind that running back performance is a product of a good OL and the Eagles have a good one this year. Andy has alot of confidence in his OL this year, therefore you'll see more running. I know it was just a couple of series that the starters played but its consistent with whats been happening in TC this year so far.
IMO, our second team did pretty well when you consider they were playing Oakland's first team when they got the TD. I think most of the kids did well.
It was a very impressive outing and they'll be tough no doubt. But you have to be worried about the depth at some positions.
fanfromarizona> I could care less if the Eagles go 0-5 this preseason. All that matters is they win when it really counts.
Fo me the record doesn't matter, but how the starters look definitely does. So far the birds look good, but Oakland is a poor team and it was only a few plays. I don't think even the most optimistic fan would expect that all year
smoak> Way to keep it real with your comments. Thanx!
I call it like I see it. I think the Eagles are a good team with an easy fourth place schedule. The combination of the two should have them in contention for a tough division. However, I also think they are razor thin at the skill positions. Brown, Pinkston, Gaffney, Basket, and McCants are not as bad as some would have you believe. However, I really dislike what you have at the RB position outside of Westbrook. I'm not a fan of Garcia, but I understan why the Eagles get him (system). I don't agree with the Eagles refusal to address the LB position. Dhani Jones is not a starter on a Super Bowl team. Trotter is a great part-time player, but shouldn't be on tyhe field in passing downs. After this season, I really think it is time to cut the cord on Kearse.

Fair enough......can't read much from one preseason but I'll bet if it turned out differently, ya'll would say, I told ya so. I, on the other hand, will always give props when props are due.:)
No, we would qualify everything we say with: "Well, it is just one preseason game...."

EVERYONE on Sportsradio 610WIP has been touting Bruce Perry as the savior of the running game, because they say he pounds the ball so well...
...what they failed to mention was that the ball gets pounded onto the turf because he fumbles so much...I was sad to see him get hurt towards the end, he's a nice kid - but I'd be surprised to see him on the team after his performance yesterday.

Bruce Perry gets hurt in every single game he plays. Looks like football is not your sport, Bruce.

Failing that, I hope someone hits a Raider hard enough for the psychic shockwave to travel through the ether and explode Norv Turner's head.
You realize of course that Norval is in SF as OC with Vanilla Boy Mike Nolan. Yes, they've reunited the world's worst band and have doomed the 49ers to a decade of miserable failure.

Yeah, he had fumblitis in TC last year. So far this TC he's held onto the rock. Looks like he regressed. I'm very disappointed in his performance. I'm sure Andy will have some words with him after he heals.

I tend to agree with most of your comments. I think the real test will come when we play the Ravens and Steelers in a couple weeks.
Those aren't softballs I'm tossing. Feel more like basketballs....:)
I'm not worried about depth, especially on the DL. Got lots of athletic young go-geters. Its funny you mentioned depth seeing that the Redskins OL depth is Jon Alston, Mike Pucillo, Jim Molinaro, Jim Jones, Kili Lefotu, Ikechuku Ndukwe, Tyson Walter, Ethan Albright.

I missed the first part of the first quarter, so I'll have to take the information here that they starting unit looked good. But from what I saw wasn't terribly impressive. I expected better decision making out of Garcia. I'm thinking that if McNabb gets hurt this year, they don't have much at QB again. Also, I agree with the previous post about depth at RB. It seems like one of them gets hurt each year and I question the ability to stay healthy. I guess this is why we play the games.
As for winning or losing....I sure was happy we won our HOF game a couple years ago. It always feels better to win regardless.

I only remember one thing from that game in '04 and it wasn't winning.

Yeah, I remember being deflated after that game and on the verge of tears. I knew we were in trouble after that... Funny thing is I just told Maureen that is what I remembered about the HOF game.

I remember Sean Taylor. I wasn't anymore worried than I was after training camp...as far as quarterback play went. Jon Jansen was a downer tho.
Oh yeah and sitting there with a stadium packed with Broncos fans and them showing the highlights of the second quarter of SBXXII on the big screen. That was priceless.

I'd be willing to give you a $1 for every thread where a Skins fan on this board (can't vouch for other places) is confident about our depth if you'd give me $.50 for everyone I can find where a fan is concerned.
I'd come out of top.
I agree, OT specifically is an area where I can't say we've seen someone step up and show they are a capable backup. I'm ok with the interior line that plagues us in the playoffs though. Every team is going to have areas where they are not as deep as they'd like to be. I just think the Eagles have more of those than the Skins. But again I've said that because of McNabb, Reid, the schedule, JJ (and the D), and Akers, I think the Eagles are a solid team that makes a playoff run if healthy. So it isn't like I am trashing them.
Now the over-rated giants and dallass...

Once he heals, he'll find another way to get injured. Ever since his UMD days he has been fragile.

You were at the game, that's why you remember it well. Sitting at home watching the tube, all I remember clearly is hearing that Jansen had to be helped off the field (the sorry tv coverage was showing Trevor Pryce limp off) and a little while later a news alert crawl came across the screen. "Tim Brant is reporting that Jon Jansen has ruptured his achilles tendon."
Shock, anger, depression...

Yeah we were completely without information on the Jansen thing. I even snuck around to the player portal and asked some of the staff if he was ok and they said "yes". I've seen what you're talking about tho...I've got the game on DVD. That was a depressing news scroll, that's for sure.

Question: What was with Jason Avant freaking out when Parry was on the ground... they kept zooming the camera up on him and he was crying with his head on the ground and stuff.

I think they're good friends.
