This from CBS Sportsline

The Denver Post reports that the Broncos are shopping defensive tackle Lional Dalton, who started 13 games for Denver last season. The Redskins, who just released Dan Wilkinson in a cost-cutting move, are reportedly interested in Dalton's services. (8/15)

I'd give a 6th or 5th for him. He played very well last year and I'm not sure why they'd wanna get rid of him.

They want to get rid of him because of salary cap reasons from what I understand. I think there is a chance of him being a salary cap casualty but I don't know enough about the situation to say whether we should wait and see if he's cut, or trade for him. i suppose the advantage of trading for him is we bear no responsibility for his signing bonus and we wouldn't have to eat any money if we decide to let him go later. If we signed him after he was cut, there might be enough interest in him from other teams that we would have to offer some sort of guaranteed money.

Dalton would back up D. Gardner next season. They dont want to probably dont want to pay him... He'd be a good pick up. He's a big guy that can clog up holes. I think he's 6 '1' and 319lbs. and he's a smart veteran.

If he's cheap, bring him in. Unless they think a superior DT will become available at the first or second cut date.

Right now... I would take what we can get at this moment in time.

Anyone info on the guy stat wise?

Played 16 games and started 13 last year. Had 24 solo tackles, 5 assists, 1 sack, and 1 forced fumble.

He played his first four years as a backup with Baltimore, though he usually started a few games here and there. Went to Denver last year and was the starter most of the season. He's stumpy [6'1"] and fat [310 lbs]. He's 28 years old and played at Eastern Michigan.

I think he might take exception to that!:D

Hell we need stumpy and fat...let him take up some space hehe.

I think that has been his job, Tex. The Ravens played a 2-gap defense, with the tackles expected to occupy blockers so the linebackers can make plays. Denver played a very similar system last year. That may explain Dalton's low tackle numbers. Lord, I hope that explains it.

I plan to never mention it to his face.

Still a stumpy runt, though.

If we start him next to Noble then it'll be hard to run against us. Haley is soooo not the answer, plus Upshaw should be back and solidify our run D, which I will expect to be good if we sign Dalton.

Pro Bowl back dehydrated, now 'fine'
ESPN.com news services

~ ~ ~ Denver Broncos - With sufficient depth in the defensive line, the club is shopping veteran tackle Lional Dalton.

"We're going to trade Lional," coach Mike Shanahan said Thursday. "Nothing will be done for a few days, but we are shopping him at this time. We've talked to a number of teams that are interested in him.

"We feel we've got some depth at that position. We have a number of young players who are playing extremely well. Lionel has come in here in excellent shape, having cut off 25 to 30 pounds. We think we can get something in return for him since he did play quite well against Houston (in the first preseason game)."

The 6-foot-1, 309-pound Dalton started 13 games last season, helping the Broncos rank sixth in the NFL against the run. He played the previous four seasons in Baltimore.

The Redskins need to get this done.

I agree, Spence. I remember when he was a free agent his name was thrown around on Skins sites alot. I hope we can do something for him but not for a huge price

I think the possible holdup is his money, i think he has a sizeable contract that we'd have to take over. Not good, especially in dealing with champ...

i think for a 5th we should do it and figure out the money later.

Seems that if we really want him... there is a way to get him and delay the money hit long enough to sign Champ. Cant help but echo that without another big body in the midddle our season is going to be a rough one. That makes this position a rather important one at the moment.

Yeah, we really need this. Anyone have his contract info?

here are his base salaries .. which are all that are relevant since if we acquire him in a trade, we bear no responsibility for his signing bonus money (keep in mind also that we could release him with no penalty) ..

2003 1600000.00
2004 1800000.00

Sounds do-able.

Yeah, that works for the next two years. If we sign him now and draft a DT next year, we can release him without penalty before the 2005 season and save $3 million in cap space.

Wow, 1.6 & 1.8 is less than we offered Wilk' plus the guy is younger with more upside. That's tempting even though I generally think we should live with it & draft next year. (sometimes as fans we're guilty of wanting everything fixed in one year, we did a lot this year & the D can afford it)

Weird how they can be generous at some positions and total stiffs on others...Snyder does not seem to think DT are worth cap space. I tend to disagree with him.
