I don't think it was that high until we released BDW. It goes to show how much cap room they maximized while signing FA's this year. Don't forget we had to restructure some contracts to sign those 13 FA's as well.

Better use some of the cap space to extend Champ. If we do it soon enough we can pay him a good amount up front and have it come off this years cap thus somewhat keeping his future cap hits down.

Why would our cap room have been a surprise? We've known for months we were roughly $2 million under before cutting Big Daddy. Obviously when cutting him that puts us at $5 million under. What's better is, we are under next year's projected cap at the moment. That includes Arrington's 6-plus million and Samuels' 5.5 or so million base salaries. It also includes Bruce Smith's 6 million which he'll never see.

Just losing that contract as it's written will give us a nice cushion to sign rookies no matter what happens with Champ. And all of this is accomplished with 20 of 22 starters projected as under contract for next year -- Champ and Terrell/Ohalete aren't. Our cap is super sweet right now.

Posting often would require I be a hermit who exists no where but in the cyber world given how much I post elsewhere :). I'll try to stop by though from time to time :).

Westbrook had to take anger management when he did that to Davis. Maybe the FO should contact the Jets and offer them a referral.

I'm still surprised it's that much, what with rookie contracts and the random free agents we've signed in the past few months.

Oh, and Art, thanks for that nice glimmer of hope about the cap next season, you should come around here more often.

Next year's cap is far from set. There are bonuses that are dependant on this years performance that will have an as yet undetermined effect on next years cap, so to say that we are in good shape for next year's cap is premature at this point, IMO.

Still, we're better off looking at a year from now than we were looking at this year from last year.

Read it a few times, it makes sense, I promise.

Robert,

Sure, there is some bonus money that will come available in terms of incentives. But, other than Ramsey no one is set up to have any large number in incentives. Arrington and Samuels have already almost maxed out their potential contractual value. We're in great cap shape for next year and that's WITH 20 of 22 starters under contract and 50 players already signed.

That's HUGE.

Obviously my guess is either Samuels or Arrington will be asked to sign a new contract and that will further distance us from cap issues. But, even if that's not the case, the fact remains we're under the projected cap at the moment and that INCLUDES $6 million in base cap money that will never be paid to Bruce Smith. We don't have $6 million in possible incentives.

We're golden for next year. The year after becomes mildly more difficult if Arrington or Samuels doesn't do a new deal. If either does, we're golden then. The third year we're up against it then unless the other redoes his contract. If he does, we're golden then. The plan was executed beautifully this offseason to set us up for a relatively easy cap management for the next three years.

At that point the hope has to be we've drafted well enough in the next two drafts that in after three years when we cut Noble and Upshaw and Fiore that we have younger guys ready to step in.

robert11273 : the jets FO can NOT even manage their own players,
do YOU really believe they can manage/control their FANS ?

p.s. i hear westbrook is lookin' for work.
the jets will probably sign him to a 5 year deal :banghead:
