So after a month of trying to convince me to join a cash money league, my brother finally succeeded and it looks like I have the first pick in the draft (the picks snake... so i get first pick in the first round and last pick in the second round). Here's the problem: I utterly suck and don't know why I actually agreed to join (peyton backfired on me big time last FFL season).
So here's my question...
I know I should definitely target a running back in the first round but who? I think LJ is overhyped and the loss of a mainstay in the chiefs oline added to the fact that I think Herm Edwards isn't all he's cracked up to be will make him a fantasy bust.... but his numbers were CRAZY last year... but then again so were Peyton's the year before I selected him #1 overall last season. Agh!
I'd feel safe with LT. No changes in the coaching staff or in his oline AND you got pretty much a rookie QB starting, so one would think that he would get most of the load. I think I'm gonna go with him but any thoughts against my way of thinking would be read and considered.
Then you got Shaun Alexander I guess... but I have my doubts on him. Not a contract year + losing arguably the best guard in the league = not so great.
So if i hypothetically acquire LT, who should I target next? What position do I need to select? Another running back? A crazy good WR or a QB?
Any help would be greatfully accepted, I wanna win me some money :D

Do NOT get a QB with your 2nd pick. Either get a 2nd RB or a top 5 WR.

I had a #1 pick in one of my leagues and I went with LT. I think he is the safe productive pick.

Take LT with your 1st, then you will have two in a row at 2-3. Take another RB and a WR.

Larry Johnson would be my #1 pick - he's a freak, had 1750 yards while starting only 9 games and 20 TDs - WTF, that's crazy!!!
I'll say it again -- 1750 yards and 20 TDs
However, I also think you cannot go wrong with Alexander. My third choice would be LT since who knows if Rivers will put fear into opposing Defenses.
I would NOT take a QB until round 3 or 4 at the earliest and that's only if a stud somehow falls to you. You can get by with a lower tier QB in most leagues.
Good luck!

yeah but doesn't the change up of the system and loss of a key component to his line effect that any? I know his numbers last year were INSANE but I don't know.

Take LT. If Johnson does it again this year then he will take over as the #1 fantasy back, until then LT is a lock. I would also go RB in round 2 followed by a top tier WR since you will have back to back picks in the 2nd and 3rd. You can still get a good QB in the 5th or 6th (Kurt Warner).

But they lost their offensive coordinator, and willie roaf.

Shawn Alexander is the way to go here. He is always in the endzone and he plays on in an offensive system that puts points on the board. LT is great if you want solid but his numbers i think will be just that due to the new QB and the extra attention he will recieve. Alexander on the other hand gets in the endzone more frequently then LT and will have better Yards IMO because of the O's ability to stay on the field.
Moderators i think it might be wise to create a FF advice thread like we did last year to contain alot of these questions. I love answering them but it might be nice if advice could be found in the same spot so people could just read the thread and see what people have already said on the subject they may be interested in.

You go running back with your first 2 picks. They will get more touches than a wr will.

your draft by position should probably go like this
1. RB
2. RB(unless your league is super deep and all good RBs are taken, If so then go WR here as well and pick up a Thomas Jones or Willie Parker or Fred Taylor later, But only if no good RBs are left (usually only happens in league of 12 or more)
3. WR
4.WR(after this pick you have to use common sense and find value if there is still a Rueben Droughns or someone left then you should take them if they fill a starting spot on your team or are an incredible value except QB,Defense or Kicker never pick any of those 3 before round 8.)
5.TE(only a top flight one will do here other wise go WR and pick up Heath Miller or another later.
6.WR
7. RB/WR
8. QB (i know it will seem late for someone just starting to get into Fantasy but most QBs besides manning and Palmer are basically equal and usually Leftwich and Hasselback or Eli are still available here and you only need 1 Qb on your roster in most leagues so they are still available late while all good RBs will be gone by round 3.
9. WR/RB.
10. WR/RB (which ever you didnt pick last round)
After 10 you should pick up your D and Kicker. you also need to look for backup RBs that could get great numbers if the starter goes down(preferably your starter back up so your season isnt ruined if Shaun or Lt goes down. Also find players that can be gems.
Other tips dont get too many players from the same team it is sabotage if you team plays a good D or is on a bye. Also look at bye weeks and make sure you arent drafting guys with the same bye to much or you may have to dump valueable backups in order to fill all your positions. Dont get excited about Rookies or unproven talent they usually are all hype when the real games start i.e. sinorce moss or santonio holmes neither are getting first team reps.
thats all for now let me know if i can help any way else.

It's all about your leagues scoring system.Go with the TD makers.If it's a traditional scoring league,draft RB's.

Sorry, I can't create my own thread yet. I was wondering, I drafted Jerry Porter in one of the late rounds of my fantasy draft. What do you all think his chances of playing this year are? Do you think he'll be worth anything?

For the first pick the big question to me is do receptions count as points? If so, then I'd go with LT number 1. I agree about LJ and would throw a number 1 at him b/c he has bust written all over him...
For your second and third pick, it really depends on who's there then and how many qb's start. The top qb's are usually taken a little earlier if there are two starters. Every league drafts a little different. If Carson is still there at 2/3 then I'd take him and either a WR or RB. If a good 2nd Rb is still there then you gobble him up quickly such as caddy, jackson, or mcgahee. But most likely u'll have a top WR to choose from. Prob not Smith or Johnson, but Harrison and Holt. Like I said, it all depends on how the league drafts.
If you dont go w/ a QB at 2/3 then I'd def go with the 4/5 pick. You best bets that late are prob. Mcnabb, Bulger, or take a chance on Culpepper. If WR Chambers makes it this far, your league should be shot, and you need to take him!
After 4/5 you should have at least one good starter at the three big positions. TE, if you dont get Gates early then you can wait and get one later. Cooleys always a nice catch around 6/7.
Hope that helps some...

i don't know who you've been drafting with, but Eli and the QBs around his "standing" have all been gone LONG before round 8 in all my drafts. Leftwich has still been around late, but without Jimmy Smith, his numbers will likely fall a little. i got lucky and took Palmer in the 4th the night that he played against the packers...now he'll be a 2nd or 3rd rounder at the latest. in short, you need to draft your QB before round 8 if you're going to have any kind of stability at the position.

if any of those three are still there at the end of round 2 in a 12 team league, i'd have a heart attack and shoot the league for that as well ;)

These QBs all went past round 8 or late 7th in a 14 player league with experienced players,
Big Ben,Mcnair,Brees,Leftwich,C.Simms,Plummer,Farve,Bl edsoe,Delhomme, Pennington,B. Johnson,Brunnell,Pennington, Rivers,Grossman. There are still some solid QBs in there they may not set the league on fire but unless you get Peyton, Palmer, Mcnabb, Brady, then the rest are all in the next group with Warner, Farve and the other second tier QBs that will all score about the same over the course of a season IMO. Id still go WRs and RBs early and wait on one of the ones i highlighted.

It all depends on the scoring system. If TD passes are worth less than rushing and reception TD's and negative points are awarded for INT's, then the QB is less important than your RB'S and WR's.
On the other hand, in my cash league we don't deduct points for INT's and TD's are all equal, so the QB is one of the top scorers and they go quick. You need to grab one between rounds 3-5 or you will be scrambling all season, trying to play matchups, which always burns you.

of that group, delhomme is the only one i'd feel comfortable relying on from week to week. ben, pennington, johnson, brunell and grossman aren't QBs i want leading my team week in and week out, brees has major question marks surrounding his health, rivers and simms are unprovens, bledsoe isn't a sure bet to be the starter all season, and plummer and favre aren't going to do you any good in leagues that penalize for INTs.
i'd also argue that anyone relying on Brady this year is looking at a major let down. he has NO ONE to throw the ball to with Branch's hold out.

The Pats made a press release today basically stating that Branch isn't going anywhere - and regardless I think Brady will be a STUD this year, maybe the #2 best QB. I agree with you completely after that. I don't agree that everyone after the top 4 or 5 QBs is the same. For example, I think there is a HUGE difference b/t Favre and Plummer or Delhomme and B.Johnson

even if branch stays, it doesn't mean he plays. he said a couple weeks ago that he was willing to wait until week 10 to play (the deadline to start playing to make sure you accrue a season towards free agency). after that, brady has nothing to work with. he's a good QB, but so is Favre, and we saw last year what happened to him with poor talent at the receiver position, and i would rank last year's packer receivers higher than this year's pats receivers, assuming branch does hold out.
