I will be the first to admit that I'm far from an expert on the X's and O's of the game, and there are obviously some people here who are pretty advanced with that sort of thing.

So, I'm asking for an evaluation of our secondary, as it stood last night, without Shawn Springs. I of course saw the results last night, and thought they looked mediocre at best, but is this the result of poor schemes, poor talent, both?

I'm really afraid that Springs will be out again next week and we'll be facing a far superior receiving corp than what we saw last night. T.O. will be especially jacked up. If we can't get to Bledsoe, well, I'm starting to smell burnt toast.

So, how good (or bad) is this secondary without Springs and now Priloeau? Player by player analysis would be awesome from some of our resident experts. Danke.

I've never played a down of organized football in my life, but I can say one thing: The Dallas offensive line is nowhere close to that of the Vikings. Hutch was shutting down Griffin last night, which definately hurt our pass rush. Hopefully, the D-line will be able to do more next week, meaning more pressure on Bledsoe and less pressure on Rogers/Wright/Rumph.

Hopefully.

If Priloeau's injury is severe, that is a major blow to the secondary. He is an excellent reserve safety. I thought he played with alot of passion during the preseason.

I think they will be ok next week. I think the fact that our blitzing linebackers and safeties were getting picked up had everything to do with it. If you blitz 2 guys and they get picked up then you have 1-1 coverage on the outside + time for the QB to get it there....if you blitz you gotta be able to get in the QBs face. I specifically remember seeing ST being easlity handled by Chester Taylor on a blitz.

our secondary is something to be concerned about. i didnt see anything glaringly wrong with archuleta last night, but i essentially watched just the 2nd half, watching both teams get field goals to end the first. sean taylor made good plays, but alot of bad ones as well. he still always tries to make the big hit every time. still too many penalties. rogers looked fine for the most part, but got beaten badly by marcus robinson for a TD. kenny wright, didnt notice much about him, but im sure he didnt do too great for the d to allow that many 3rd dwon conversions.

Rumph is better than we think and might be a better option than Wright. We need a fast CB to go with Rogers though. He can't take on the speedier wideouts. Arch has always been a liability in coverage, but Taylor is a still solid. Getting Springs back will help big time, but they can do well in the interim.

I couldn't agree with this more ....... I think we may end up with a steal if he can develop under Coach Williams system. SanFran was just not a good fit for him. .............. Our secondary without Springs as the primary corner puts real limits on what the rest of our blitz packages can do. When you have that special type of corner (like Springs) it allow for more flexibility with the rest of the D.

Well, if we're looking strictly at the secondary's performance, then I really think Gregg Williams needs to switch to more man coverage and less zone. We ran zone on practically every third down, and we all know what happened on those. Johnson picked it apart all night. Man coverage resulted in the early bomb to Williamson and the near-touchdown (again to Williamson), but after those two plays, both involved corners (Rogers and Rumph) played significantly better when locked onto a single receiver. The zone didn't work all night. If our pass rush had been getting through, it would have been a lot more effective, but Williams really needed to see that we simply weren't getting through to Johnson and adjust accordingly.

Rumph needs work, but he showed me a lot last night. He took the proper angles on his coverage, unlike Wright and Rogers(occasionally). He will be a good NB, and good against physical wideouts. He's got the size to matchup with guys like Owens.

It's tough to judge right now, because our CB's made some great plays last night, and they also got burned. I don't think we'll see Carlos make the same mistakes twice... he's too good for that. Don't know what we have in Rumph yet, and Arch is looking a little wild to me, as he was caught out of position a lot. Next week is going to be the real judge of what we have minus Springs.

The irony is that Smoot played a really nice game.
