View Full Version : Dalton talk from a Bronco Fan

I'd like to start by commenting on what a nice board this is.
There has been a lot of talk about Dalton being traded to the 'skins and I thought you might want a Bronco perspective on this. I was really surprised to hear he was on the trading block as Shanahan really pined for this guy when he played for the Ravens. He did start last year and was great against the rush, tying up blockers so the LBs could get the tackles. When the new defensive coordinator came in (Larry Coyer) and changed the defensive philosophy (more attacking style like Tampa) Dalton responded by losing lots of weight. I guess the improvement by second year DTs Pope and Davis has a lot to do with it but Dalton is no slouch. My hope is for a trade involving some help at CB. Maybe the odd man out in Washington’s nickel back battle, Bauman or Molden. Any thoughts on this being a possibility?

I'd be more than happy if we could trade Alex Molden for Dalton. Molden hasn't shown much during the preseason. But with our luck, he'd go to the pro-bowl for you guys. lol j/k
The more I hear about Dalton the more I want this to happen. Thanks for stopping by hR and giving us a little info on this guy. Hopefully it all gets worked out in the end.

Hey, thanks for the info, Even. I'd definitely support a Dalton/Molden trade. We've already got three quality corners, and a backup (probably now, anyway) free safety who can play corner if need be.

Fascinating, so basically he was a good player who is on the outs with the new coordinator's system.
Sounds like a really good idea, especially since DT-Noble bit the dust last night (word is gone for season).
And wow, what a complimentary trade for both teams. CB being no problem for us, it's on the brink of being a luxury. I'd prefer Molden just because he's newer to the team (he'd also be more experienced for you). Liked the little I saw of Bauman's rookie year.

Evenrude, thanks for the thoughtful perspective on Dalton.
I haven't heard any talk about players being involved in the possible Dalton trade. All I've heard is 4-5 round draft picks being all that would be needed to get it done. Now that we really nedd his services though I can see the Broncos holding out for a little more though.

Yeah, the Molden for Dalton trade sounds good. Bauman will be our #3 guy. By the way, thanks for the info evenrude.

How ya doin? A Bronco Fan here and just wanted to gain some info about this Dalton thing.
As far as I know the trade won't involve getting a player from the Skins because essentially, the Broncos are off loading Dalton:
1. to have more money for the cap next year to sign two key 'backers (Gold, Al Wilson)
2. We already have a run plugging wide body in Darius Holland who's looked good so far in camp.
Dalton's a good run stuffer, and you guys need some beef in the middle. I'm pretty sure that Shanahan and the Bronco's don't want a player in exchange (Molden's not that good really, and McNeil is still available for cheap as a free agent). So it looks like a trade for a conditional 4th rounder, possible going to 3rd if Dalton reaches certain playing time conditions etc.
What do you think? Would Snyderbrenner ( j/k  ) go for that?
BTW, cool board.

First, welcome to the Orange fans. Nice words about the board. The more i hear about this trade, the more i get thrilled. so i hope we'll get it done.

Welcome to hR Dr. Funk! Cool screen name.
Again, thanks for sharing your perspective on this Dalton trade. I think Snyder will do whatever needs to be done to get Dalton in a Redskins uni. I agree with your thoughts on Molden. He really isn't that good anyways. I doubt he'd make your team.
As for compensation, I read where a 5th round choice is being talked about right now. They didn't go into #s about his playing time. But I'd be willing to give up a 3rd next year if he comes in here and busts his arse for us. I wouldn't have a problem with that at all. I'd much rather have a known player than taking a chance on drafting a bust.

Just as a side note, what's the deal with Smooty? Was he really being shopped last year for a 3rd rounder, and if he was, is it because he's looking for a huge payday soon or is it because of his mouth?
There's no doubt the guy has got game, last year at times he looked better than the Champ.
Oh, and, I don't know what the deal with Grady Jackson is but I'm not sure if he's the guy you should be gunning for. He perennially shows up for camp overweight and out of shape and he has stamina problems. Dalton is essentially the same player (run stuffer) but with better stamina since he lost the spare tire: He's down to a svelte 309.
I'm surprised you guys haven't gone after Chrisitian Peter (DT) who's a solid player when healthy. He played for the Giants in they're super bowl run but I think he's a FA now.

Dr. Funk, apparently Jackson showed up to TC 30 pounds lighter this year and in good shape. Atleast thats being reported from Saints TC.
As for Smoot, I don't know if he was being delt around or not. The media said yes and the Redskins said no.
This is his last year under contract with the Redskins. Champs big pay day is coming up at the end of this year as well. Supposedly the Redskins and Champs agent opened up contract talks last night. The starting point seemed to be with a 14 million dollar signing bonus. So, if that gets done, there is no way we'll be able to keep Smoot beyond this year. He'll be wanting his money too. I'll hate to see Smoot leave. I've been one of his biggest supporters since we drafted him. At times it seems that he has problems covering guys but then he'll redeem himself with making a unbelieveable play...

Concerning Smoot, he will be a Restricted Free Agent, which is quite interesting because for around a 2 M$ tender he won't go except for a 1st and a 2 rounder...

i will take dalton for molden in a heart beat! no question we should keep the younger, faster, better all around corner.

Smoot looked like a fool last year. Bailey looked much better. Smoot made some good plays, but got burnt a bunch of times. Its like every time we get burned deep I look for Smoot. He needs to step up his game.

When we got burned deep last season I looked for Terrell.

Well, for what it's worth, Smooty is still a young player and will give up the occasional big play but he bounces back well and did grab several ints. Smooty and Champ seem two solid corners but they're going to struggle as long as there's no consistent pass rush up front.
We had the same situation in Denver. Our starting three CBs were all first rounders with ability, talent, and coverage skills (O'Neal, Walker, Poole) but were ineffective because of a serious lack of pass rush thanks to the only DE in the league who can fall asleep on a three point stance: Kavika Pittman.

yep, I agree with you DF. Not pass rush = WRs getting open. Thats why I really hope we can get this trade out of the way quickly.
BTW, REDMAN welcome to hR. Hope you'll hang around with us for a while....that goes out to you too Dr. Funk. We welcome an outsiders view of things.

I beleive the deal for Dalton is going to be for a fifth that will become a fourth if he plays alot of downs ...

I just want it done. I want a quality DT in here practicing with the first team and learning the new system ASAP.

Same here..the sooner the better..the guy needs to learn the terminology and get some chemistry with others on the D.

I can dig that. I think the trade's gonna happen pretty soon as well because his salary cap number etc isn't huge.
The only thing is though, he's a great run stuffer and will keep Trotter, Arrington free of blockers but he's not a DT that's gonna penetrate and disrupt things in the backfield. Guys like that are very rare. So if you're looking for some pass rush help, then well, I hope Upshaw and Smith still have something left in the tank.

How is your running back situation? I heard Olandis Gary has been moved. Everything I've been hearing has us moving one of our RB's for Dalton?

Well the more I hear, the more it sounds like it will be a 4-5 round pick for Dalton. I hope it happens and he pans out for you guys (I like to watch anybody slap the Cowboys around).
We're sitting pretty good at RB. Portis is a stud and Mike Anderson is a more than capable FB/Backup RB. We also have rookies Cecip Sapp (bruiser) and Quinton Griffen (currently injured but showed a lot of promise in early training camp).
Keep us posted if you guys hear any more rumours.

Yo Evinrude, is Quinton Griffen the RB from OU? A small RB that is very quick, kinda like Warrick Dunn.....
Is so, I hope he does well.

Hey glad to have you Broncs fans aboard....how you feel about Terrell Davis...Dam I felt bad he could not make a comeback..the man is THE reason that the Broncos have those 2 Lombardies...I know Elway is a legend there but Davis made those teams Superbowl caliber. Whats your thoughts on that.

Yep, one and the same. Strong little guy too, I was excited to see him go to Denver. Unfortunately, he broke a fibula early on in training camp and will miss most if not all of preseason. I still think he makes the roster just on what he displayed the limited time he got.
As far as Terrell, it really sucks that we'll never see how far he could have gone. I hope they someday see it fit to put him in the Hall of Fame, but I don't know if it will happen with his short career.
I enjoy visiting insitefull boards such as this one... just don't bring up Super Bowl XXII and we'll be ok ;)
