The deficit in the U.S. current account rose to $218.4 billion in the April-June quarter, an increase of 2.4 percent over the first three months of the year, the Commerce Department reported Monday.

as pogo used to say, "we have met the enemy, and it is us.."
it is our insatiable desire for cheap consumer goods that is driving this

That's true, but this administration could do something to regulate the spigot. Human rights worked as an issue in the past. ;)

No kidding. I'd vote for TO for president if he'd cut spending at this point.
I hate Democrats and Republicans.

I've come to call them Republicrats.
No matter the good intentions of decent folks like Spence and Fent who work for change within the system, the folks up top are routinely represented by the "Haves" who really only care about the "Have Nots" to the extent that they can be be manipulated into not voting for their opponent come election time.
Neither group will cut spending because it takes a measure of character that just isn't prevalent in national politics today. So, at the current pace, we're destined to spend ourselves into oblivion.

Nobody will cut spending because almost nobody votes for it. Politicians don't espouse policies almost everyone hates. If you want to complain about spending, send your complaints to the American people. If the American people wanted big spending cuts, one of the two major parties would make it an issue.
People vote for big government. It's just that simple. You don't have to like it, but you do have to accept it as a fact.

it is not so much that people want big government.. it is that they want their share of pork, or entitlements, or tax cuts... or whatever.. to be sacrosanct.. there is zero sense of community or shared sacrifice.
we have gotten the leaders we deserve
