Peter King just reported that Chris Simms has had his spleen removed and has received a blood transfusion. I didn't watch any of that game until the very end after the Skins game was over. I wasn't even aware that he got injured. Does anyone know anything about this?

I hope he's alright

I know nothing more than what was reported during the game tonight, but I am sure reporters are the last people that the Simms family needs to be talking to at a time like this.

I'm just wondering if he took a vicious hit today that knocked him out of the game. I hadn't seen any highlights (or lowlights in this case) showing as much.

I didn't see one and I am pretty sure he finished the game. I watched most the last 5 minutes, but Carolina had the ball for a good portion of that time.

I watched most the last 5 minutes, but Carolina had the ball for a good portion of that time.I was just on the WashPost site and they have a pic of him walking off the field at the end of the game. The article mentions him taking several hard hits during the game, and at one time the team saying that he was suffering through cramps.

He must have an extremly high threshold for pain if his spleen was ruptured and he stayed in the game, and only thought it was cramps. Hope he is ok.

Wow, I saw a lot of the game and didn't see any specific hit that caused this. Regardless of who he is, he has my prayers. Without a spleen, death can come very easy in the form of pneumonia, which I have had the displeasure of suffering myself, years ago.

What exactly does a spleen do?

It filters the blood and fights germs and is the biggest organ that does so. Without it, flu shots, pnemonia shots and any other infection inoculation is absoutely mandatory every year, because a simple cold could eventually cause death.

As much as I hate the guy, that absolutely sucks. Hope he heals up well and soon.

Really. That actually sounds really bad.

Not to sound mean or anything, but this is going to be a TOUGH setback for the team. They let Griese go, who is the backup? I can't imagine who they can bring in at this point to learn the system, in the tough NFC South, and being last in the division, and now the QB is knocked out for the next 2 months.

Looking for a veteran? We can offer them our very own Todd Collins for their 1st rounder next year. I am sure he can do just fine handing the ball off and will master the short dumpoffs they will ask their QB to do.

NFL Network is reporting that he is fine and recovering, in stable condition, and expected to miss the next 2 months.

As a person, I wish Chris a good recovery.

they traded for tim rattay last year. not a long term answer, but he has starting experience in the league, and has played well before. also, 6th rd rookie bruce gradkowski(who saw limited action in the game today while simms was out) has been quite impressive, but keeping in mind hes a rookie. if simms is expected to miss a lengthy amount, like 2 months, i could see gradkowski getting the starting nod. the team is already 0-3, how much worse can they really do? simms hasnt been impressive at all this year, so maybe theyll see what they have here with this kid.

Apparently, they think the spleen was ruptured in the 2nd quarter. Simms stayed in and almost brought the team back at the end. IMO, he'll miss the rest of the season.

On the pregame shows today he was talking as if this was a make or break week for him, although I don't think this is what he had in mind.

many people have their spleens removed.. most because of trauma.. you can have a spleen removed and live a perfectly normal life..

minimum 2 months probably 3 before he sees a football field....he is done for the year and Tampa is in trouble as Cadillac isn't exactly lighting it up.

I hated the punk but I never wanted him to get hurt like this. I hope he gets healthy soon.

What is the other option at QB for Tampa Bay?

EDIT: Asked and answered. I forgot about our good ol' buddy Tim Rattay. And his backup, a good ol' rookie, Bruce Radkowski.

grad who?

I was never a fan of Rattay when SF used to play him. It's gonna get ugly in Grudenville. Some day I would like to see Gruden coach here. The man fascinates me. Maybe he could be a coordinator for us if Saunders/Williams steps up to take the head coach job. If Williams falls into the roll of HC, Gruden would make a nasty D coordinator.

I found this quote on http://www.nfl.com/teams/story/TB/9682987

Simms was replaced by rookie Bruce Gradkowski for the last play of the third quarter and first play of the fourth. He went to the ground on one knee before leaving the field and walking to the locker room on his own power.

The Bucs punted two plays later, and Simms returned to the game when Tampa Bay got the ball back. He led a fourth-quarter field goal drive that gave the Bucs a 24-23 lead, but the defense couldn't hold.

I wonder if Gradkowski is the option behind door #2.

As in 5th round 2006 draft pick, Gradkowski is his name.

Why did they give him a blood transfusion? Is this standard operating procedure for spleen removal surgery?

Poor guy.

when a spleen ruptures there is a usually a lot of blood loss.. sometimes it is gradual and sometimes the belly fills with blood almost immediately.. people die from that kind of injury if it is massive enough.. in simms case one would assume that the leakage was slower, but still significant enough to require transfusion.. he is a lucky man...

Internal bleeding. Egads. Thank goodness they had the sense to get him to a hospital. Whenever I hear stuff like this, it reminds me of the importance of donating blood whenever a blood drive comes around.

I hope they investigate how and when this injury happened.

It looked like he took a really hard helmet to rib shot when he dove in for the TD that he scored.

I always thought Sean Taylor would be the first to cause a spleen removal from an NFL player.

I hope Simms gets better soon. As much as I don't like the guy, you never want to see someone go through something like this. Plus, I'd like the chance to rough him up ourselves later this year.

Yeah, I didn't pay a lot of attention to the game, but Chris Simms impressed the heck out of me over the past year. I thought he was a joke and a shell of a QB eho only played b/c of who his dad is. The man has guts, and I hope he gets better.

He took a big hit on a TD run to the corner (pylon) of the endzone. I think that was the hit that did it. I think he was upended.

He took quite a few big hits, but one stood out where he was jumping for the endzone and got upended. He landed flat on his back. Looked nasty.

But what was crazy was that he eventually went to the locker room in the 3rd quarter due to injury but later came back in the 4th to almost lead the team to victory. Then after the game he was taken to the hospital. Thats just insane.

It was more than a couple of years ago. A couple of years ago Gruden was the winning head coach in SB 37. Before that he was HC in Oakland.

ry, sometimes I worry about you. You want Gruden to come here and install a WCO if Saunders becomes head coach here? Did you think that one through?

i think he was the qb coach for the eagles before he got his big break.. definitely onthe offensive side of the ball.. it was a major reach to make him a head coach, but he has done well. he still is one of the younger coaches

if a player is roster worthy it is hard to put fear in them with free agency..
look how many contracts gardner has gotten..the only option is to fill your roster with players who have a blue collar work ethic..
