~ ~ ~ Redskins officials, meantime, met with Champ Bailey's representative last night and opened negotiations on a contract extension for the three-time Pro Bowl cornerback. The two sides hoped the deliberations would progress toward a long-term deal with a signing bonus of more than $14 million.

Wow...if they are talking signing bonus...then they may be closer than we think. Could you imagine having Champ signed by the end of the preseason?

I like the idea of having champ long term...but i feel as if we're biting off more than we can chew. He's already under contract through this season right? With all these big contracts looming over us, we won't be able to get what we need in the offseason. If we think this is the year to win it all, we need a little more. The salary cap is going to bite us in teh ass.

I'm sick of hearing about the salary cap to be brutally honest...Every year I hear...we are going to be in salary cap hell, we are screwed because of the cap. Yet every year, Snyder proves he can manuever around the cap. I think we need to stop worrying so much. They know what they are doing cap wise....I think they deserve their props for that much.

You may be sick of hearingabout it, but it does not make it go away or make it less reality than it is. Fact is, it has to be managed and dealt with and teams that don't crash and burn.
My bet is with Champ, the sticking issue will be bonus. My bet is they may have lready agreed on parameters of yearly salary but now are negotiating salary bonus pay out.

I know the cap doesn't go away, but instead of saying we can't do this because of salary cap, just let the team worry about the salary cap. Snyder obviously knows what he is doing with the cap, so why constantly say we're going to be in cap hell when we never are.

Champ: "I want to be paid as the best"
CAN YOU SAY: $17 -$20 million signing bonus (alone).
Don't get me wrong, he's a great talent but IMO, no one player is is worth 10% or more of the teams total salary cap ($75 million) in 2004.

Well, then you probably have an issue with Lavar and Samuels contracts. Champ's bonus would be straightlined over the length of the contract in regards to the cap. To me, the bonus is a given here, the issue is how long of a contract, what is the hit from the salary, and are there further escalators that could get out of hand as with Lavar's current deal?

Your right - Personally, I feel alot of these contracts are way out of hand. I love football and I love the Redskins, but do not feel these guys are worth THAT much money. BUT that is a whole different discussion and don't want to get started with it.

I would really like to get Champ signed soon but my question is, Where will it stop? How much are we gonna give Lavar when his time comes, or Samuels for that matter. I wonder if the money will ever run out.

thing is guys, someone will give these guys that kind of money so why not let it be us and we can keep our team together. I know Chris and Lavar are coming due and the front office will be dealing with that but if we are not willing to make that final push to try and win why even bother to sign these guys to a big deal

We need to keep some kind of core here in washington. IMO that core is Lavar and Champ. Bottom line. Those guys should be Redskins for life no matter how much it costs. They put everything on the line for the team and the team should do the same for them.
