First Cuts???

When are teams suppose to start trimming down their rosters? I thought teams should be already doing this. But, perhaps its after the 3rd game and not the 2nd.

AS best as I can determine:
August 26 = Roster cut to maximum of 65 players

August 31 = Roster cut to maximum of 53 players

September 1 = Clubs may establish 5 player practice squad

September 4 = Regular season begins

October 4 = Trading deadline

This looks largely accurate. The only thing I was thinking that was different was the level of the first cut down. I thought it was down to 60, but 65 is probably right.

This first cut will not be a hard one. Most teams know who they are going to cut in the first group by the time camp starts. It's that last group that really is hard.
