Football isn't a safe sport to play to begin with. You have to expect injuries, and it sounds like this head coach is a bit too lazy in my opinion. The players feel safe. I think that this is just terrible that they got their season CANCELLED because they were shut out in 4 games...

I have never heard of that before in my life. That is horrible.
my senior year of soccer we SUCKED...i was a keeper and defender and i led the team in goals with 2. we won 1 game and it was at the very end of the year, but we NEVER thought about cancelling...i'd be ticked.

Same here my junior year of football my team started 0-7 and we won our second to last game of the year {rant](in which I had a fumble return for a TD called back because of a clipping penalty 20 yards away from me....damn you Sean Byrne!!!!!)[/rant] but we never thought of quitting either. We ended 1-7-1 as we ended the season in a scoreless tie.

You can't cancel a season. You will never build a program if the school quits on them. I'd be absolutely nuts if that happened to me. The team I'm coaching this year is 1-4 (the only win coming against one of the worst teams in the state) having lost 70-0, 37-6 (touchdown against their freshmen with our varsity), 20-2 (the safety was a bad snap over the punter's head) and 43-0 against our rival. At no point have I wanted to quit. The team we beat is riding a 27 game losing streak and will most certainly not win this year, so it'll be 33 starting next season and they don't quit.

This just makes me angry. It's teaching them that when they fail that they should just quit.

Good decision. When they need more than one doctors clearance to play to fill up a roster, then its just time to call it quits.

That's ridiculous, I would flip out if I was on that team. That coach is a prick just because he doesn't know how to coach he has to deprive these kids of playing, good morals.

I hadn't seen this article and I'm glad I didn't, because this is just straight BS! How in the hell could you cancel the season, because they haven't won a game. If I'm reading this right, it was because the coach wanted to cancel. If that's the case, the they need to just get another coach. Just because he's a quiter, doesn't mean that you need to try and turn his team into one! I can't believe that the school let this happen. I'm surprised that a law suit hasn't come out of this.

hmmm....let me just say first and foremost I am not a squeamish Mom, afterall I have helped create a tackle Rugby club for my boys in my county...that being said....the issue seems to me, not that they weren't winning, but that the other teams were much bigger then they were. the board recently upheld the school's earlier decision to end the season, saying players risked injury in trying to take on much stronger opponents.
Having a kid in the smallest school in our county we struggle to keep enough players on our teams to even play our sports. Last year there were only 13 kids on our JV football squad.
On top of that most of the larger kids are pulled from the squads they should be on, and made to play up a level in order for us to just field teams. We also have to go up against schools that are not in our division. This usually results in a loopsided victory for the other teams. We have a total student population of 850 and we play teams from schools that have over 2000 kids...now who do you think has the better pool to chose kids from? Who's kids are going to be bigger, faster, stronger?
So IMO, they shouldn't have cancelled the season, but they should have found a different division for these kids to play in. When we stay in our division, for the most part we are evenly matched size-for-size, when we have to play the big powerhouses not in our division, then we are usually beaten badly and our kids are often hurt badly. This is a problem within the school systems that ought to be fixed.

I get pissed at things like this because the kids did NOTHING to deserve this.

Pissed at my opinion, or at the article?
Even my husband, who is a Rugby coach, said that they were correct to pull their kids from what sounds like a dangerous situation. Like I said, let them play, but get them some opponents that are their equals
