The refs continue to stink throughout the NFL. They completely stole the game from the Chargers. Absolute hogwash. Mike Carey and his crew found every way to call a penalty against the Chargers in the last 7 minutes of the game. Terrible. This has to stop.

Basically they just started calling everything possible on the Chargers and turned a blind eye towards any possible penalties the Ravens committed. Every incompletion was a defensive hold. Ravens would encroach and false start would be called. It was a total joke.

skins were lucky as well.. they got the benefit of a dubious call in the fumble recovery by campbell.. it looked like the jag player did have his knee down.. it was very close

i was going to say they needed full time refs.. but given how bad the nba refs are, there is no guarantee that would improve things either..

I agree, and said so during the game thread. I think there is a very real home field advantage that exists as these calls always seem to go the way of the home team, unless you are playing the colts or steelers.

if they fired all the refs that stink, they wouldn't have a complete crew to ref every game.. so many are just turkeys

You guys tend to think officials play favorites in a particular game. Why is that? Do you think they are getting paid? What would they get out of favoring a particular team over the the other? Curious to hear your response.

Well, Marty didn't help the cause, either. I knew in the 3d quarter that he was going to find a way to lose that game. The Chargers dominated Baltimore, but he stopped passing in the second half (they ran 12 times in a row at one point) and the Ravens managed to squeak things out. Philip Rivers was looking pretty good, too.

Did you see the Cincy-NE game? Talk about bogus calls, one of the Bengals secondary guys made a great play on a Pats receiver in the redzone to break up a pass, and they called him for a personal foul. That was crazy. He knocked the crap out of the receiver, but that's what he's supposed to do. The announcers said he was being called for a helmut2helmut, but it didn't look that way to me. The Pats went on to score a TD, and the game was pretty much over after that.

that came down to "unrefutable evidence"...there apparently wasn't an angle that showed where the ball was when the knee touched.

I don't buy into any conspiracy theories with the zebras. The fact is that they need to be: smarter, younger, full time NFL employees, going to school in the off season, able to pass a fitness test ( eye test incl.), and working with teams on the off season practices teaching them the nuances of the rules, etc. Until they get right, we will have these problems in abundance.

The problem with the NFL officiating when it comes to age is that they want experienced officials to work in the league. From what I hear, you have to have at least ten years of major college ball before they will even look at you. Combine that with the major conferences wanting you to have a lot of experience before they hire you and you can see the snowball effect. It takes a long time to get the call up. As far as full time official, basketball refs are full time, baseball umps are full time, and people are still disappointed. Fact of the matter is officiating is a "no win" profession and regardless of what you do, 50% of the people will be upset.

While I am not a huge conspiracy theorist, I do think the refs are garbage far too often, and from my viewpoint a few of the more popular teams in the league seem to get more calls, especially in crunch time. Many times refs have too much of an impact where they should let guys play IMO. When refs start calling every minute thing, especially when it has little barring on the play itself it ruins the game. When refs let guys play for 3 quarters, then start dictating the game with their whistles in the 4th quarter it ruins the integrity of the game. JMHO.

I think refs are influenced by crowds - home crowds - giving them the business and howling for blood. How many times have you seen a very, very late flag for pass interference when a home-field receiver missed a catch and the crowd was booing up a storm? How about encroachment being called as offsides on the visitor? Over and over again.

I also think they are prone to "make-up" calls in which they realize they blew one and then they make-up a call on the other team.

Good teams get a lot of breaks as well. The Patriots get a huge margin for error in games and have for years. The 49ers got help all the time inthe 80's.

The biggest issue I have is with lack of consistency. If a ref is going to call game tight, let him do it for both teams for four quarters. Refs who change their approach, calling the first half loose and the 4th quarter tight, should be summarily executed at midfield.

Last, Offensive Pass Interference is alive and well and should be called. Big receivers get away with murder in this league.

This happens in almost every game.

I hear the same complaining about the '06 refs as I have any other year. (With or without instant replay) Same stuff...different year.

I think the speed of the game and the size of the players have gotten too fast and big for anyone to accurately get things right all of the time. How on earth can someone accurately see if a knee is down or not when a 4.3 speed RB hits a pile of six 300+ linemen? I think they get it right more often than not...although the mistakes via instant replay are inexcusable.

I prefer the college version, where the guys in the booth automatically stop the game if they thing a bad call was made. They make the decision upstairs and call it down to the field. They have all the camera angles, an early look at the play, and you don't have to waste time having the ref walk over to the camera on the sidelines.

I also dont' think full time refs are going to make a difference. Sure, they will have more to lose if they botch a play (such as their job) but they will also have more pressure to "try" to get things right and could screw things up as well.

It is what it is, I say...

Ed Hocholi is buff as anything and he wears a smaller shirt to show it off, just a note on our zebras are having secret workouts at the "U" with all these other players.

I don't have a beef with the refs in general...but I HATE Ed Hochuli. I hate him so much, I bought an NFL ref doll, named him Hochuli and when I scream "Hochuli" to my dog...she finds the doll, grabs it in her mouth and whips it back and forth violently. My dog is a sweetheart in everything in life until it comes to Hochuli. Ask Keino..he has witnessed this first hand.

In fact, "Hochuli" should probably be my dog's attack command. ;)

So basically...my dog and I hate Ed Hochuli.

Too bad I have dropped my hate for him and transfered it to Mike Carey who is just trash incarnate.
