The latest Time and Newsweek give it outstanding reviews. "Profanely funny, savagely entertaining."
Time called DiCaprio "Scorsese's new DeNiro."
I'm allergic to movie theaters, but I might make an exception with this one and spend the afternoon with Jack, Matt Damon, Leonardo, Martin Sheen, Mark Wahlberg, and Alec Baldwin (whose tough guy cop steals scenes, they say...), along with the great city of Boston as the backdrop. The plot and that cast makes me salivate with anticipation. :)

I have yet to see a Scorsese movie I didn't like. I am eagerly looking forward to this one. One question, is it going to be a 3 hour movie?

Only 3? I hope it's 4! :) Scorsese was on Conan tonight, and he really got my juices flowing over the movie. Nicholson made his character more perverse and evil, and even surprised the other actors with improv along the way. Jack can do what he wants.
But seriously, running time is 151 minutes.

Yeah his filmography is amazing...and quite diverse. From Taxi Driver to Casino to Cape Fear to Gangs of New York and even Color of Money. He is damn good telling all different types of stories.
The only movie I'm not a huge fan of is The Last Tempation...
I can't wait to see The Departed.

Really? I thought that was a powerful movie. It blew Mel Gibson's The Passion away.

Just got back from it: Really great movie, but extremely depressing. I like Scorsese's work, and this is in his top 3 I think. But, I don't think they told Jack Nicholson that they were actually filming a movie, I think they just followed him around for a couple months with a camera.

He's just the total villan. And he's amazing it in, but its like the stereotypical out of control Jack Nicholson we read about in the tabloids.

I think DiCaprio and Jack should get them. Damon is great also, but is overwhelmed by the other two(and he has the Good Shepard coming out). Might be a Best Picture contender(depending on how the rest of the year shakes out).

I thought it was really good. Very intense and some great performances.
Not quite up there with my favorites from Scorsese. I would rank Raging Bull, Goodfellas, Casino, Taxi Driver, and Last Temptation of Christ ahead of it. The Departed is right at the top of my second tier of Scorsese films.

Haven't seen No Direction Home. Casino is a film I tend to like a lot more than most others. Not that it's poorly received, but most regard it as second tier Scorsese. I love it though. I love the setting, love DeNiro, love quoting Joe Pesci, I even love that cheesy opening shot when DeNiro blows up in the car and you can clearly see it cut to a mannequin as the bomb goes off.
Mean Streets I have only seen once and keep meaning to watch it again cause I didn't think all that much of it when I saw it a few years ago. I want to give it another look though.
I also think my perception of The Departed might be hindered just a bit b/c I have seen the original Infernal Affairs, so I knew how everything was going to end. If the awesome ending had caught me completely by surprise, I might have fallen completely in love with it.

Well, I was a fan of the original Internal Affairs, and this was better. No Direction Home is the Bob Dylan documentary which was amazing. I loved the first half of Casino and then it falls apart. About when Ginger starts screwing Joe Pesci, the movie is worthless. Its no goodfellas. The Departed is what Scorsese did in the beginning: contradictions and harsh violence, which he had gotten away from.

I agree. Actually I would say its in the middle of his second tier. A really good movie though. I liked it alot. But...
SPOILER WARNING
Anthony Anderson? Why? And the violence actually became redundant and unaffective at the end. And the last shot of the rat? Wow. That was weak and lazy. Great performances, very intense, great dialogue, and, as usual, a good soundtrack. And anytime you can have Mark Wahlberg bring something to a movie thats an achievment in itself. The best movie Ive seen in a looong while. But not one of Scorsese's best.

DiCaprio really stole this film. Nicholson was classic. I liked Damon, but he didn't do anything I haven't seen from him before: Take his roles in Bourne Identity, Talented Mr. Ripley and of course Good Will Hunting (for the accent) and you have his character in this movie.
DiCaprio has been steadily improving his performances throughout his career, he is really becoming a very quality actor.

He actually was a great actor before Romeo & Juilet and Titanic, Basketball Diaries and Whats Eating Gilbert Grape(which I think he was nominated for) were great performances of his. Its good that he's decided to stick with solid roles now that are in his range rather than poppy roles in crappy movies.

Maybe they can make one of those cheesy direct to video sequels like The Butterfly Effect 2 or The Skulls 2, haha.

I saw it on TV. Absolutely hated everything about it. It spawned a lot of inside jokes between me and my gf though because of how stupid it was. For some reason she decided to stay with me after I made her watch the whole thing. God bless her.

Well, I'm sure the cash flow is attractive to the studio, but Scorsese is 64 and he has a few other projects on the backburner so I don't know if he'd want to devote time to something like this that in all likelihood wouldn't add much to his filmography.
But stranger things have certainly happened and it is always interesting to see Scorsese and DeNiro team up.

SPOILERS
The best you've ever seen? I dont remember ever being so dissapointed with an ending before. That last scene in the elevators where everyone gets shot is laughable to say the least, and the close up of the rat at the very end is just plain pathetic. It's like the writer said, "Ok, the movie is great, now how can we end it fast and make it entertaining at the same time? Let's just have everyone get shot in less than 3 minutes and go to the credits! Wow, what a fabulous idea!!"
SpicyMcHaggis
02-09-2007, 01:45 PM
Why would that be the only possible ending?
Because that's the whole theme of the movie. There is no difference between good and evil. There is at least some part of both in everybody. In the end, nobody wins. It doesn't make a difference if you're the good guy or the bad guy.
If anyone had survived, either the good guy or the bad guy would have won, and that would have been the exact opposite of the statement the movie tries to make.

I have no problem with everyone dying, it just looked too sloppy, almost as if it were intended for a comedy. I cant stress enough how crappy that elevator scene and the rat at the end were.

Like the dreadful ending in "True Romance." Actually, that movie suffers with the casting of Christian Slater, too.

The Departed-- Great friggen movie!!! Loved it, all of it. Great performances all around but I thought Alec Baldwin's was the best. He should be up for the supporting role, along with Marky Mark.
My only complaint was the country version of Comfortably Numb I heard in the soundtrack. Not so much a complaint really, just a WTH? moment.

***spoilers*** Don't read if you haven't seen the movie.
Wahlberg was getting revenge for the killing of his boss (Martin Sheen's character) and his undercover agent (DiCaprio). So his loyalty was definitely to the police. I actually figured that final scene was coming. Wahlberg's character had been out of the movie for a bit and I knew he would resurface to settle the score.

absolutely. true romance dives at the halfway point, with the switch to the LA set and cast. it's as if tarantino, halfway through the writing, got the idea of a 4 way mexican ending and then started writing toward it, rather than following the arc he'd already set up so nicely. the second half also ruins the efficacy of the hamlet redux motif. you could blame tony scott for so unhamletly letting slater live at teh end (i think tarantino wrote it with clarence dying), but really, that aspect lost all effect when tarantino had clarence transform overnight from a passion killer into a smooth drug runner. i didn't mind the death toll at the end of departed, but the rat in the window made me embarrassed for scorcese. the single biggest mistake me made, though, was developing the relationship btwn dicaprio and his therapist, damon's gf. heavyhanded to make it sexual. those scenes would've been better spent on more client-therapist discourse. this is why the sopranos is so successful with that dynamic. as someone already mentioned, the framework the movie sets up for itself means that it doesn't really matter who teh father of the baby is.

LOL I actually really liked the ending in True Romance. The story was pretty unrealistic and so that kind of ending wasn't that much of a surprise, especially in a script written by Tarantino. I loved Brad Pitt's character in that movie.

Wahlberg has that same kinda personality in every movie he does and thats why he is great b/c he can have different type of characters but you still get his personality. I truly am unsure of who does the best job in this movie, no matter the size of the part. Everything is perfect and as for the ending, I cannot think of another way to end it, so I have no complaints there. I have already watched it like a dozen or so times and it would be more if I had the time. I dont really like Baldwin but in this I can put away my personal dislike for the guy. Damon & Wahlberg were on my faves list before this movie and this only bettered my love for both.

Not just Baldwin......Walberg and Damon had a couple I like to incorporate in to daily conversation as well!
Sweaty Baldwin going after the surveillance camera guy was hilarious though.
**** YOU! YOU ****ING HIPPIE!
Baldwin is the man.

Not me, I was happy to see his head splattered on the door behind him.

Yeh, but not so much about him getting away with it but the fact that before going to see in it in the theaters, I heard rumors of a sequel so I thought he would be the central character of the sequel.
I thought it to be cool if he was a bad guy in one set of movies and then a good guy(Bourne) in another set at the sametime. But he is a "bad guy" already in the Ocean series.

I thought it was fitting that Damon gets whacked in his mob supplied Beacon Hill condo. Wahlberg's CSI-proof outfit was a nice touch, too. I just wonder if the Troopahs awarded Damon the coveted "Medal a' Merit." lol.

That was my first thought, but then I also thought, well maybe he was crooked all along, and killing Damon's character would remove any connection. I have to see it again for sure.
I read somewhere that the brown envelop DiCaprio gave Damon's gf held all the info about Damon and his true identity. That's why he told her to open the envelop only if something happens to him. She ended up giving it to Wahlberg who finished the job.

That's why she was so ticked-off when she left DiCaprio's funeral, I guess.

And she fell for Leo too. So she was upset that he was dead.

I'm pretty sure Leo was the daddy of her kid.

That was a good one.
I suggest anything that Alec Baldwin said, including: "You have an immaculate record. Some people don't trust a guy with an immaculate record. I have an immaculate record." (takes a swig of Bud, hits golf ball)

I saw it on Sunday. What an awesome movie. Jack was awesome, Caprio was the best. Great cast and a good storyline. The ending was crappy, but it made the movie.
Cranberry Juice anyone? :)
