Ok, folks, here is the deal. Looks like the Redskins have rejected trade terms with the Broncos for Lionel Dalton and that Denver has agreed to trade him elsewhere, unnamed right now. So the situation comes down to trading Watson or Betts plus a draft pick to NO for one of there backups. I say No. That is too heavy of a price to pay fo rmore friggin backups.
Lets see what we got. lets use Haley, Jackson, Wynn, Scott, Cowsette, and see if we can get a Carl Powell type of that bunch. lets use a rotation. I just dont wanna see us pay a heavy pricve to bring in a body that is just as good as the guys we have here currently.

For the love of God, Cerrato, just make the trade for Dalton.... I don't like overpaying, but I really wouldn't object to a third-rounder and Molden right now.

Guys???? Did you ever think that teh asking price was a little steep and that maybe they view Dalton equal to what we have in camp right now?

Will someone please get Ron Wolfe on the phone! What is our FO thinking? Is Dalton that out of shape ?Our kicker makes more than 1.6 million doesnt he?I dont think that it was too much to pay.
This will be a long season w/o a proven Dt.I mean its not as if we have pro bowl De's to begin with.If we cant stop the run we will do no better than we did in the mid to late 90's and i dont mean the 1 year we went to the playoffs.

They are caugh in that ugly thing we talked about in the off-season, you know, the don'ts. One of the big don'ts is to not have plan. They clearly had no plan at DT, which i must add what a weak spot going into the off-season, yet they addressed it with Jermaine Haley and Bernard Holsey????? Where was the draft pick? Did they not know well in advance that Big daddy's contract would be at $3.5 mil???? Has Big Daddy not already renegotiated that same contract twice???? What would have possibly made them believe that he would renegotiate or take a cut for a third time?
After a pretty decent off season and addressing needs, this certainly pulls down that off-season grade in retrospect. This was just piss poor planning and now they are stuck in a situation where every friggin NFL franchise knows we need a DT, and even a mediocre one will come steeper than need be.
Another question....why not just release Big dady and either resign Gardener or Powell??? If they knew Big daddy's contract was too big, release him and resign Carl Powell at half the price. I dont get the thinking at all on DT this off-season.

Thats why we really need Danny to hire a GM and stop thinking he and Vinny can run everything.I'm not saying the guys we have cant produce but obviously some of the players arent excited about it either(Bruce Smith,etc.).
I keep having these recurring dreams of the defense with Norv at the helm.It too lacked D-line strength and helped cause us one year to go from7-1 to 9-7 and miss the playoffs.I think this makes us no better a team on (paper atleast) than last years 7-9 squad.
I hope i'm wrong but championships arent won on offense (assuming that starts working)alone.

....unless you're the Rams. Sadly, we aren't the Rams, though the pieces of our offensive puzzle vaguely resemble them.
Honestly, this is just was Mark said it was.... Piss poor planning. We really need a DT, and we just blew our shot at grabbing a decent one after spending an offseason ignoring the position.

Arent you guys worried that if SS doesnt improve this year whether its the D or the O or both he might just exit stage right?

Exactly and then we can kiss LaVarr and a few others goodbye and before you know it well have our very own"Dave Campo" with "jerry Jones" pulling his strings.I mean whos going to want to come here and coach after the Norv/Marty fiasco?

Dalton and Washington both would play the nose and we already have enough guys to do that. We need a rush guy at tackle. I am not really worried and here is why...
Rush downs..
de wynn
dt hailey
dt cannida / cowsette
de upshaw
passing downs
de jackson
dt hailey
dt wynn
de upshaw
and cut that loud mouth Bruce Smith

Over nothing???? I suppose the two holes at guard last year was nothing too. The center of our defense is gone and the top 3 guys that we had in mind to play in there are gone (gardener, big daddy and noble). 2 of the 3 replacements thought to be brought in are gone.
I'd love to have hailey, cannida and cowsette play well.. but i wouldn't count on it. Counting on one to be solid is asking a lot, but all three?

The fact of the matter is that with the team trying to resign Bailey to an extension, we have very little money to make a trade for a front line starter. In addition, with the DT market as thin as it is, no team is going to part with a starter at DT for a backup RB, it just ain't going to happen. So we can complain about the lack of a plan or wonder why they are not making a trade, but there really are no alternatives out there right now that are a true upgrade over what we have right now. We simply are not going to convince the Saints to give up Jackson for a backup RB. What the heck would they do then? See what I mean?

LEt's see how things turn out against the ravens. Everybody was pissed by Big daddy lack of ethic and performance. Now he's gone and almost EB is complaining. I'm not to worried right now (maybe later) but i agree and most thnigs with Brett A

The defense played really well after the injury last weekend. Let's give 'em another shot.
Cut-down-day is coming up maybe we can find a big body.

This is exactly what I was talking about on another thread. It does not surprise me ....... at least until we've played Saturday's game.
Wynn will play alot of DT this week and Jackson and Zellner at DE.
No one in the organization is in a panic yet AND they are NOT going to give up a draft pick coupled with a player to obtain a mediocre player. Unless something falls into their laps, I really doubt that anything will happen until next week when the cuts start being made.

Actually I have heard Zellner has been a little impressive. If we can keep Bruce and Upshaw healthy, rotate in jackson and Zellner for rest, Wynn can solve one of our isndie positions.

This from ESPN after Noble's injury:
'"The situation has upset 19-year veteran defensive end Bruce Smith, who campaigned for Wilkinson not to be released because he felt there wasn't a viable alternative."
"We should have kept one of those two defensive tackles, either Gardener or Big Daddy," Smith said. "It's the reason we're in the situation we're in right now. The best decision for us is to go out and get Big Daddy or someone comparable because right now we're just a little short. We've got to stop this run. We've got to stop this run or it's going to be a long year."'

Bruce is just afraid that people will look to him to earn his paycheck ... and actually be noticed taking the great circle path trying to get another sack on every down ... pass or run
Bruce wants the 3 other DL guys to play defense ... while he looks for a sack record thats all

I agree with PSF's original posts and Bruce Smith's comment. Our whole D Line is shady. No rotation plan rationalizing holds water here IMO. A 19 year veteran is probably still the best piece. That's frightening. I have no idea what the answer is here. Spectacular LB play and a ground game of our own to gain back some time of possession? The 2nd suggestion is way far fetched.

I think this great for these guys filling in at DT. They have something to prove and show they have what it takes, we as fans just need to show confidence in these guys no matter what, always cheer for the guys. I myself as a Mets fan, have learned to have patience and confidence, i'm just not in any mood to test my patience.

the article in the washington post sheds some light on why the skins didnt get dalton or washington. chicago wanted a 4th rounder for washington and the skins dont have one cuz they dealt it to NE. its ironic how NE used that pick to acquire big ted. they couldve given chicago a 3rd rounder, but they figured that was too high for a 35 year old guy with a history of injuries. the price for dalton was too high according to the skins FO. i think denver wanted a pretty high pick for dalton and the redskins didnt view him as a huge upgrade to cannida or holsey, both of whom play the same spot. they traded a 7th rounder for martin chase, whom i know nothing about but at this stage anything is better than nothing. i know they want another DT signed but i think they'll wait until next tuesday. i see why things didnt fall thru like we all wanted. i would have loved to see dalton and/or washington here but it just wasnt meant to be.

To all the optimists out there, we're screwed. Our D-line is the worst I've seen here in years and one of the worst in the league. Our FO will look like bigger idiots then they already are and they'd better put every cent and draft pick they have into making the d-line respectable next year.
