View Full Version : Can Champ Play DT?

before you go ballistic on me all you Champ fans let me just say that I too think he is probably the best CB in the league ...
he's looking for a serious chunk of change and I find myself wondering ... if Gardener was healthy wouldn't you rather have him under contract (and remember we had our chance well before he went and got dumb and hurt recently) and a starting CB tandem of Smoot and Bauman/Molden, than Smoot and Bailey at CB and a string of unheralded NFL back-up DTs, and an ex-arena league DT (anyone else notice that the arena league hardly ever runs the ball ??)?
I think we have the luxury of having not just the best tandem of CBs in the league, but probably also the best nickle back option and if they keep 4 the best 4 CBs in the league (maybe ever) ... and it seems we do not have a single NFL starter to play the interior D-Line ...
remind me again ... you win NFL games by ... ummm ... playing defense and rushing the ball ... right? Honestly what is the difference in winning games between Bailey/Smoot and Smoot/Bauman? How many games do you think it changes? Now compare that to having a weak (seriously weak?) interior D-Line and a MLB with bad knees?
I need help here ... the nightmares have started already

We have lost the last three years WITH Champ...and we will most likely loss in the future WITH or WITHOUT Champ. I'm not sure it even matters anymore.
Damn it...my glass is half empty all of a sudden.

BrokenStriker is correct. I think Champ is the best CB in the league and I am all for giving him his props and his money and I think 14.75 Million is good money. I don't know how much you guys make, but to me, that sounds like a lot of money.

Again where have we gotten? The fact is, if we are going to pay out a huge $18 mil bonus, what sacrifices are acceptable?

Yep and it's pretty much been sumed up in a couple of other threads too. Fact is, A GOOD defense starts with the line, then linebackers, and then defensive backs. And if there is a weak area of your D, it's always best if its the DBs - you can get away with average players there.

no. then teams can pass on you all day and then open up the run. i want champ to stay in a skins uniform. i think that if we can get an above average dt, we'll be fine.

I think you need a playmaker at each level of the defense. you can't win without a shutdown corner, or a sideline to sideline LB. and for sure you need a run stuffer. I believe you need a good balance of those and solid players at the other positions. check out Tampa's D.

YES - Check out Tampa D and where's the money. IN THE LINE!
If you haven't notice the pass couple of weeks, IF you don't have time to throw the ball it really doesn't matter who is on the corners. .......... Having quality DBs is GREAT but not where I put my prioriteis. HELL, give me all hard playing journeymen at every position, I'll take that over having 2 - 3 superstars.

fasten your seat belts ....
lets trade Champ for an All-Pro prime of his career DT
#1 CB in the NFL for the #1, 2, 3, 4, .... or even 10 DT ...
hell for the wampum he wants maybe we could afford to snag a free agent elsewhere and still pay a top-flight DT

whether we resign champ or not, i dont think we are in any financial shape in the next few years to invest in 2 pro-bowl caliber DL in free agancy. i think we are definitely gonna have to DL heavy in the draft, hope we find some studs and go from there.

The bucs have John Lynch as a Safety. The cover 2 makes up for most weaknesses that their CBs have. Let's also not overlook their LBs...one cannot say that Derrick Brooks plays a small part on Defense. One Great DT would make a world of difference. But I think the differenc between Smoot/Bauman and Bailey/Smoot is enough for me to keep Champ. We all know Smoot has trouble covering #2 receivers. How will he cover Boston or Moss or TO. He can't. He cannot physically compete with them. If we were to shed Champ for a Stud DT, he better make a sack 2/3 of the time when they dop back to pass, because that's how many times they will throw to Smoot and I don't like his chances against #1 WRs. Antonio Bryant burnt him. I'm not putting him p against Marvin Harrison. Then everyone will complain about our secondary and how we get passed all over. Effective Run Blitzing by our LBs can greatly improve the effectivness of our D-Line. We just need to execute and I don't think getting rid of champ is the best option available to us right now.

If we had stud dts then ideally the other team wouldn't have time to burn Smooty and Bauman...I like Champ alot but he is going to have to be reasonable. I mean Danny is trying to field a winner. I know I'm not in the same situation as these guys and injuries are a huge risk to them but really is 2-3 million in bonus going to make a huge difference to guys like Champ. He's basically set unless he ends up with a Mc Hammer posse and house. I realize if situations were reversed I may think different but I'd like to think that I could take a little bit of a hit in order to help the team field a winner. :twak:
