I have gone on record as saying that I thought the 14.75 Million bonus in the initial contract offer to Champ was fair, but what I have been reading, at least in the Times, leads me to believe that it was not a true 14.75 in up front money.
The team wants it to be tiered, with 6 million of it, in essence, a roster bonus.
I think the team should just come clean and write the check for 14.75 million in upfront money. They would have much more credibility with Champ and the fans if that were the case rather than trying to dress it up and make it what it is not.
Whether they do it in 1 payment or 2 will make no difference in the impact on the cap, so why don't they just do it in 1 payment?
Some deals even have insurance with the team as the beneficiary in case the player is injured or retires to recoup the investment. The Urlacher deal in Chicago has this clause, I don't think it is too much to ask.
I hope they work this out.
