I know that the trading deadline during the season has come and went, but I remember on the CBS pre-game show with Charlie Casserly, that they have a new trading window prior to the draft now. Teams could trade for positions of need prior to the draft, so that it could shake up who gets drafted. Has anyone else heard of this new trading window? I know what you're thinking, why isn't this in the NFL forum, but couldn't teams gun for Betts or Duckett during this window in order to insure that they get first crack at the rights to re-sign them? Another question I have is, when does a players' year officially end?

No trading can happen until after the Superbowl. And players who are not under contract (ie Will be free agents March 1, 2007 betts and Duckett for example) can be traded. The player's contract ends at the start of free agency in March of 2007.

We cannot trade Duckett or betts without signign them to a new contract. Sing & trades don't happen in the NFL because of cap hits from SB. We missed our chance in the pre- and early season to trade one of those two. Too bad.

Thanks Dustin. I didn't know the specifics, but was just wondering about the new trading period prior to the draft.

But if we trade them before March, wouldn't they technically still be under contract?

But why would the other team make that trade? Not only would they have to give up something, but then whoever they got could just wait two weeks and sign somewhere else. It would make no sense.

Isn't there a grace period before free agency that allows the player's current team the first shot at negotiations?
