Dalton eager to leave and find a new team

Lional Dalton insists he's willing to take a pay cut this year, and hopes Denver Broncos coach Mike Shanahan simply will release him if he can't finalize a trade soon.

"I understand he might lose a draft pick, but my life is at stake here. It's like playing a poker game with my life, and I'm the little pawn," Dalton said Thursday night.

The Broncos announced last week they intend to trade the veteran defensive tackle since he wasn't going to start and was scheduled to make $1.6 million this season.

Shanahan reportedly wants a fifth-round draft pick as compensation, and claims he has a trade in place if Dalton would agree to restructure his deal.

That's news to Dalton.

"I don't understand why it's my fault (a deal won't go through)," Dalton said.

"It has nothing to do with me. I'm willing to take a pay cut this year, but I'd like my contract intact for next year so if I play good this year I'll get what I'm supposed to get next year."

He believes the problem is teams are gambling that the Broncos will release him outright, and thus he'll come much cheaper.

"I want to get on the field, get in somebody's camp and start learning somebody's system," Dalton said. "I think it would help me get to camp faster if I was released."

Earlier Thursday, Shanahan said he still expects to work a trade.

Asked if he was confident he would get his draft pick, he said, "You never know what you're going to get. I said that from Day 1. We're talking to a number of people and there's still a lot of possibilities."

Looks like the Broncos are trying to pull a fast one. I don't think the Broncos have any deal in place. The FO needs to wait until he's released. No team is stupid enough to trade a 5th rd pick and take on his contract.

I think your right and I believe so does Snyder...they did not bite and Lo and Behold the guy is still available. Looks like the Broncos are starting to believe the papers that Snyder will overpay for anybody.

It seems at this point the front office is focusing on Champ. Hopefully we can get to the bottem of that at about the time when Dalton is released. Snyder knows we are tight right now and we can afford to wait. I hope he can pull this off though....

Well if he's released outright, we would not get him because of the bidding war. I mean we could if there were no salary cap, but it would prevent us from competing with other teams out there that are interested in him.

if he signs with us he has a good chance to play

Na if he was that sought after someone would have ponied up already. This guy is gonna play for maybe a little above the Vet min this year.

We can not offer a 6th or 7th pick for him because of the trade we made for Case. I would give a 5th for him at this point just because Dalton, Case, (and maybe Cannida) along with Haley would shore up the DT position. No superstar, but solid players.

Forgot about that patrick..good observation...I dont think he is worht a 5th. Especially if he will get released outright.

You maybe right TexSkin - and now thinking about, like I've been saying on other threads, lets see how we do with what we now have.

i think like chase, dalton would want the chance to start for someone. thats how you make the big bucks. you cant make an impact from the bench. i think he has the best chance to start here.

I disagree TexSkin, As far as being worth a draft pick (5th round) lets look
2002
Lott DB Tenn. has a chance to stay with the team but doubt he is here more than a few years, with Bowen and Iffy here.

Royal TE Louisana ST. , may turn out to be a good pick but it is too early for these guys to know for sure

2001
Darnerian McCants WR Delaware. He may not make the team this year

2000
Quincy Sanders DB UNLV where are you now????

1999
Derek Smith OT Vir. Tech. See Quincy Sanders above

1998
MArk Fischer G Purdue See above
:banghead:

1997 we have 4 5th rounders
Jamel Williams DB Nebraska
Brad Badger G Stanford
Keith Thibodeaux DB NW Louisana
Twan Russell LB Miami See above... 4 times

1996
Leo Evans DB Virginia St see above:banghead:

1995
Jamie Asher TE Louisville played a few years left for Eagles..See above

1994, 1992, 1991...none

1993
Greg Huntington C Penn State....see above also

!990
Brian Mitchell RB SW Louisana... finally 13 years to find a solid player and Mitchell was the best at returns

So my point is, other than the money which he is willing to help with, why is he not worth a 5th round pick. If we could get a DT in here and take care of the middle of our defensive line, why not. Sorry people are why too stingy with lower round draft picks, I would send the next 3 years 5th rounders to pick him up

I'd rather deal a 5th rounder. Don't forget all the teams in the league who also need a DT. Were not the only ones and if we do sign him as a FA we'll likely have to pay more.

I would offer a 6th but be willing to spend that 5th round pick on him. Besides if he is released won't he be on waivers ? Then someone with a higher waiver factor could pick him up before us. JMO

PS Nice work Skins57 I agree!

Whoa, whoa, not worth a fifth round pick? Are you forgetting what happened in the offseason already? Let's do some math here, boys and girls.

Trung Canidate: Probable starter, will at least see plenty of playing time. Instant impact. Worth more than a fourth-rounder? Hell yes.

Chad Morton: Best kick returner we've had since Brian Mitchell, and will also play Mitchell's role of occasional third-down back. Worth a fourth-rounder? That's affirmatory.

Matt Bowen: Starting safety, and may set the tempo of the defense as the first hard-hitting secondary player we've had in years. Instant impact, and a whole helluvalot of it. Worth a sixth-rounder? Is the Pope Catholic?

Laveraneus Coles: Come on, do I really need to say anything here? No, no I don't.

I know I've forgotten someone there, but the point remains. Why in the world wouldn't Dalton be worth a fifth-rounder? How many fifth-round DTs are already guaranteed to be relatively good players in the NFL and will start right away? I'd gladly give a fifth-rounder to get Dalton, it's the same strategy we've employed the entire off season, and it's been pretty damn effective so far.

I have little doubt in my mind at this time that a deal will get done with Dalton. The possibilty of another team signing him is there, of course, but we already called their bluff once which leads me to think the other teams interested can't be willing to offer much more than what we are. I just hope it gets done soon. I think the FO would like to evaluate what we have one more time against the ravens and see exactly HOW MUCH we need him.

I think the FO has handled this well. I dont think we should be throwing draft picks around just because we are needy. Dalton looks like a carbon copy of what we already have.

Are we really looking at keeping 5 DT's? Holsey, Haley, Cannida and Martin locks to make the squad I would think. Wynn will probably get reps there, at the very least on passing downs. I don't know that this Dalton is a definite upgrade over anyone we have here now, with the possible exception of Cannida.

Don't forget abou Cowsette who got some reps last year as a backup.

I'm thinking that we don't want to give up a draft pick on a guy that may not even make the team.

How many 5th rounders make thier teams, not all of them and this guy has played in the NFL and must have played well enough for Denver to go get him

I agree with skins57.He ia worth a 5th round pick.1 b/c our current FO has had no luck drafting beyond the 2nd or 3rd round and b/c our team desperately needs another starting quality dt.I dont want to give away next years draft but i think this guys as good if not better than Chase and that means Dalton and Hailey would probably start.Which means we would owe NO a 7th,The Pats had our 4th,and we would give a 5th for Dalton. We would still have 4 picks not to mention the ability to recoup some wit a RB trade or the trade of Bailey if he wont resign. If hes waived i dont think hed ever make it.He could probably make a push to start on the Ravens or a few other teams around the league.
