The Program on International Policy Attitudes [associated with the University of Maryland] has just completed their latest survey of Iraqi public opinion. Every American should have a look at it.
Seventy four percent of Shiites and 91% of Sunnis want the United States military to leave Iraq within a year. The number is 80% for Shiites in Baghdad. By wide margins, both groups believe U.S. forces are provoking more violence than they're preventing, and both groups believe that day-to-day security would improve if we left. Most Sunnis and Shiites upport attacks on U.S. forces. And before anyone starts parroting that idiotic line from the Bush admin that this is all the work of Al Qaeda and they'll follow us if we leave, consider this: 94% of Iraqis continue to disapprove of al-Qaeda. The violence in Iraq is Sunni v. Shiite and we're just getting in their way.
