Well I thought he would at least stay in it till Iowa. I actually thought he had a good shot until the mood of the country changed this year.

he's the republican version of John Kerry...i would bet he knew 6 months ago that he wasn't likely to do well in 08 and is just now admitting it.

He was winning straw polls though as late as summer of last year. The question is what neo-con/christian conservative rises up to take his place.

you can pretty safely toss that one out the window. it'll come down to the christian conservative vs. the old school conservative bases to decide who wins this time. any neo that jumps in will quickly be labeled as such and won't have a chance.

Sop McCain vs. who?

a potential christian conservative that's laying low now, but i know firsthand he's looking, is Mike Huckabee, the governor of Arkansas. he's been mentioned for a while, and now that Frist is officially out, there aren't any other big righties in, so his dark horse status doesn't hurt him as much.

running huckabee would be akin to the dems running paul tsongis or dukakis..
dream on,it will never happen.
the CC's will have to content themselves with the veep candidate this time around--- unless the GOP has a political death wish

well, the Dems DID run Dukakis...and thew GOP ran Dole. Both parties have their share of quixotic campaigns.

dole was mainstream .. but the reality was that nobody had a chance against clinton.. the same way nobody had a chance against reagan...

there is a battle for control of the gop that is going to happen between pragmatists like giuliani and mccain supporters and ideologues who support people like huckabee.. parties do strange things sometimes, but as much as the true believers want someone from the far right, i think mccain will have the inside track all the way.. it is his nomination to lose at this point..

I'm with Fent on this one. I never thought Frist had a chance and I don't think this alters the GOP '08 landscape one bit. The only person who should be saddened is John Kerry, who was counting on Frist to make him look like William the Conqueror by comparison.

Doubtful he would have anything worse happen to him except a fine. He could be free of that and any other rumors and still wouldn't be able to overcome his crippling lack of charisma or personality.

He could be free of that and any other rumors and still wouldn't be able to overcome his crippling lack of charisma or personality.A fine for such a thing would be a disaster for a presidential candidate. Putting aside Frist's other, admittedly considerable, liabilities, a fine for insider trading would be completely devastating.

like the one you started that he and Kerry wear women's stockings and lipstick while singing show tunes after late votes in the senate?

Okay, I just called Frist a closet crossdresser. That I could buy. I don't think Mayballine makes enough makeup to cover Kerry's pumpkin head.

I don't think Mayballine makes enough makeup to cover Kerry's pumpkin head.Surely the dude who played Lurch on The Addams Family had a makeup person. Problem solved. I'm not saying that genius could make Kerry look human, but certainly less inhuman. I mean, after a season or two that Lurch guy was almost cuddly.

Kerry: You rang?

American people: No, Lur -- John. No, we didn't. Really, we didn't.
