If the Texas Longhorns call, Jerry Gray will listen.

Gray, a former All-America safety at Texas, said Thursday he would be interested in the Longhorns' vacant defensive coordinator job but has not been contacted by the school.

The Longhorns are in search of a replacement for co-defensive coordinator Gene Chizik, who accepted the head coaching job at Iowa State on Monday.

"It's one of the premier jobs in the country," said Gray, who is in his first season as secondary/cornerbacks coach for the Washington Redskins. "A lot of guys in the NFL would want that job.

"Any time you get a chance to go back and work for your alma mater, it would be a blessing."

Prior to joining the Redskins, Gray spent the past five seasons as defensive coordinator for the Buffalo Bills.

"Guys never get a chance to go back (home) at the right time," he said. "Right now would be great if it ever happened."

Gray, a Lubbock native, was a two-time consensus All-American and Southwest Conference defensive player of the year for the Longhorns from 1983-84. He was a first-round pick in the 1985 NFL draft and a four-time Pro Bowler in nine seasons before retiring in 1993.

Looks like he is very interested in the vacated Texas D-coord job.

how i see it, although i think the players we have has something to do with it, not just the coaching staff

He might need to (looking at a new position) out of NECESSITY (and not out of desire) in the offseason. I am smelling some coaching changes. I can't honestly say I can state what contributions to the positive that his coaching has effected.

GW will still be here, we'll be fine... because ultimately the same concept will be in place.

i think he was looking to be an nfl headcoach until the bottom fell out last year.. we are clearly an interval position for him.. he might need to drop down to college level to get a coordinators position next year and rehab his rep.. i doubt he will get much of a look at def coordinators positions in the nfl the coming year

If Jackson takes over, I'll be very concerned.

It would be nice to still have DeWayne Walker here. Look what his defense is doing at UCLA. He's had a huge impact on that team. He looks like a real up and coming coach.

either way, if jerry leaves or someone else leaves, thats not the problelm. I believe the problem was there wasn't one guy in charge, who had power. So the players are going one way then another....i think if he goes maybe players will be like "ok, we follow this other guy now, without hesitation, and without being confused by a different person."

sorta like go full ahead, not half way

he probably needs to go college to even get a coordinators job..

meanwhile after the way walker got ucla to shut down usc, he might land a head coaching job at a college or even get a coordinators job in the nfl
if he wants one.. he should be red hot this off season

I wish him the best if he were to leave the Skins. I was hoping he would stay for a while, but you can't really force a guy to stay.

despite what is for certain a nice salary, i think he really has asperations of becoming a head coach.. he won't get it staying on as db coach of the skins..
even without the turmoil between him and jackson, it was likely to be a one year stay anyway

Yeah, I know he's not going to pass up a better job because he's "buddies" with Coach Williams. I'd be happy if he stays, but we can't have him on a leash.

it was akin to when we had marv lewis.. just a matter of time before he stepped up.. it is that way with younger quality coaches.. you really wouldn't want it any other way

I say fire all of the coaches, keep Gibbs, and bring back Martyball and run a San-Diego style of offense. We have the personnel to do it.

you are going to get a lesson why martyball does not work in a few weeks when the chargers flame out once again

i saw it.. thanks..

it will be interesting what happens when the chargers do flame out.. my guess is that rivers gets a lot of the blame for being too young and inexperienced for the playoffs... still, marty always manages to flame out every time.
this should be his last year as a HC

Minus Carolina, the secondary has not played well at all. Its not all Gray's fault, but I'm not sure its a big loss, and he is certainly replaceable.

This would be kind of funny to me if Jerry Gray came back to UT where he played his college ball. I'm a Longhorn fan and the last time we had a Defensive Coordinator opening Gray was the guy everyone was clamoring for.

He turned UT down and said his aspirations were to become an NFL head coach at that time. Funny how a bad season with the Skins will get him to change his mind about wanting to go back to Austin. :)

not only that, who knows how much longer mack brown is there ?

but gray still wants to be a headcoach in the nfl, so you never know how long he will coach at UT

Well Mack is probably there until he wants to retire. There's not many better jobs in college or the pros than the one he has at UT. He's pretty well-liked and even though he's got a very high salary, he said he's not coaching for the money and if the job becomes too much he said he'd just walk away. (He really means this because his wife Sally made a ton of money in real estate I believe from their days in North Carolina.)

I would like to see Gray come back. He's a very good coach, but maybe some time back at UT could restore some luster to his reputation and give his resume a nice boost. I'd rather see him stay with the Skins though as I don't really feel that everything that's gone wrong with the secondary is entirely his fault.

it wasn't from his days at tulane, for certain...LOL

my daughter went to UT and i am a fan.. still, i think there is no better recruiter in the nation and worse game day coach than mack brown.. they should have won a couple more national championships with the talent he has brought to austin

He has clouded the situation here I believe.
I wonder just how much we will trim down in the offseason.

for sure he was a 1 year coach..

might be a lot of blood letting this off season.. little reason to have continuity of this coaching staff.. they are running about a D collectively
