I received a notice for jury duty in January the other day. It says that I will have to check the night before 1/9, 1/16, 1/23, and 1/30.

Does anyone know how this works? Next month will be my last term in school. (We do 5 week terms) I will have 20 hours of class, an internship and my job. I can't afford to miss any school. I may be able to get away with one day but no more than that. The city of Virginia Beach is trying to screw up my life and I need to know if there is a way to get out of this.

I don't know anything about it...but I've seen tv shows where they pretend to be racist and that gets them out of it...

Just show up to jury duty with a hot dog in your zipper and you should be excused quickly. Seriously, go, the odds are you won't draw a long case and it should take a day. Two at the most.

If I go the first day and don't get selected, (but waste a day) will I still have to check on the other days.

Yeah, but the odds are you'll get some quick 1 day case. Check the notice for reasons to get out of it, but some states have total jury duty(no excuses). Massachusetts made a Supreme Court Justice(Beyer) sit on a 2 day long jury case a few years back i believe.

I have received 4 or 5 jury summons and have yet to have to serve. Don't return the letter and if they call, tell them that the rapture is upon us and to pack plenty of clean water as you hideaway. Then finish with, "see you on the other side."
That should take care of it.

actually is a criminal offense to ignore a jury summons... very unlikely to result in anything, but it is usually a bad idea to go out of your way to offend someone

My sister was selected for jury duty down here a few months ago and ended up sitting on a 5 day personal injury case. She's married to a trial lawyer and I'm amazed the defense didn't strike her. No one is safe!

I was just being facetious. Truthfully, I have gotten out of jury duty because I have to take care of my kids.

Make sure you are nicely attired. I had jury duty the summer after I turned 18. I was in nice shorts, nice shoes, nice long sleeve shirt. The females were usually in tshirts, shorts and flip flops. i went into the court room and the judge went off on how I disgraced his court room by looking like that. How dare I do this.... It went on for about 5 minutes. It seems I was supposed to wear pants. The sheriff told me, as he escorted me back to the waiting room where I was to be dismissed, that I could have been held in contempt. I told him I wish the judge did because I would have sued him and the entire Va Beach court system for sexual discrimination. The sheriff just stared at me for awhile, clearly ticked.

Here in Bexar County, one of the automatic exclusions is if you're enrolled in school (must provide proof).

I've done jury duty twice (one personal injury case, one traffic court). I kind of enjoyed it -- it's interesting to see the process of a trial.

If missing the classes will cause you to fail the course, you should be able to claim hardship. If you would like, I could contact the Commonwealth's Attorney down there and reference all your posts here. That should get you out of it.

i have known quite a few people who have gotten out of it by saying outrageous things when they were interviewed.. it angers the judge to do that, but there is not a lot they can do most of the time

Being a student should get you out of it. On the notice, was there a place to contact them if you feel you cannot serve? If so, you could contact them now to get out of it. Every jurisdiction is different but I know here we have a list of people who claimed to not be able to serve because of school. You can bet every year about 90% of that list is requested to serve in the summer.

I was on Jury Duty once when I lived in DE. (Small state, so they end up getting everyone at least once)

It was actually a decent 2-day experience for me. I think I missed a few classes but I probalby would have missed most of them anyway. ;)

i have been summoned 2 times, but i have never gotten a chance to be interviewed. The first time i just sat in a room for 4 hours and they finally let me go.

The 2nd time i waited outside for 30 mins and then the sherriff came out and said everyone past this point can go home.

My wife has yet to be summoned.
