I don't know if the NFL works like the NBA, but would it be possible to make a trade of high priced salaries just to dump them off.
For example trade Portis and Archuleta to the Texans for a combination of draft picks and/or a young player.
I guess the point of my question isn't whether we should trade Portis, it is whether trading two large salaries like that for draft picks is allowed.
Thanks.

Not after the trade deadline, which was around Week 8, I think. You can do trades again in February sometime.

the difference between the NBA and NFL is the salary cap hit that we take by trading our players.
In the NBA, there is no hit, which makes those players very valuable.
However, in the NFL, if we were to trade say Portis, the remainder of his signing bonus would be accelerated against next years cap, which would be a charge of around 12 million or so, effectively destroying our cap room and creating more damage than it frees up.

Yep, and all teams involved in the trade must be able to take on the cap implications of the trade. You just can't dump a contract entirely, you eat the rest of the signing bonus.

Oh, yeah. Plus there's that, lol.

A lot of that is guessing, only the league has the true numbers and clauses which effect the cap figure.

that site is pretty easy to follow though, at least. on a side note, they have consitently stated that they have no numbers on Rocky's deal and that they have estimated it based on the picks around him. i thought that was strange.

And even they are guessing as Snyder has proven to actually skirt the rulkes by guaranteeing roster bonus and future salary to restructure at a whim. They are good rough estimates though.

I'm not saying it isn't, I'm saying that no one has the raw numbers except the NFL. We can just guess at it. There are rumors that Arch and Lloyd have clauses which make it hard to cut them, but I've also heard those are false. Only the Skins know.

Yeah, and why not? We are, after all, the reigning offseason champions!!
It's so painful living through those boring months of August through December, when there is so little offseason activity. FINALLY we are on the threshold of the RETURN OF OFFSEASON FOOTBALL!!! YES! GO, SKINS!!
(sorry, just a little bitter)

I saw we trade all 53 players plus the practice squad and start fresh like a new club. *sarcasm*
