Interesting. I can see why the players would complain but isn't it the same off-season program they've had for the last 3 years? They were able to turn it up last year and they've improved their play this year as well. Actually if I remember correctly didn't Gibbs and the coaching staff place the latest possible date for training camp? Not sure what happens w/OTAs and stuff but I think this article is trying to make a mountain out of a molehill.

While I agree with the tone of the article, maybe getting into your mid-thirties has somethig to do with Daniel's lack of explosiveness and tending towards minor injuries?

This stuff is really starting to annoy me. I can see how these guys want to take some time off to relax and mentally get away, but all I heard during the offseason is about how these OTAs were nothing more than glorified conditioning sessions.
Philip Daniels, don't try to say that the reason why you can't "run through anybody" anymore is cause you had an offseason of OTAs. You had the shortest and easiest training camp in the league, BY FAR. Maybe the reason you can't run through anybody is because you couldn't do it in the first place against anyone whose name wasn't Torin Tucker. Enough with the freaking excuses on why we suck, just get some more talented players in here on defense.
They can give these guys all the time off in the offseason that they want, but they need to be going full bore in training camp twice as much as they were this year. We lost this season in training camp with that Club Med vacation we ran. Shortest schedule in the league and three two-a-days? Give these guys a month or two off and then make them WORK in practice. And just get rid of the guys who simply can't cut it anymore.

Absolutely perfect reply. We tried the relaxed "trust your veteran players" approach and it failed. Now it is time to send these men to the brink of hell and back and keep the ones who are left standing.

Hello captain obvious!
Anyways, Daniels is a respected leader of the defense, it might not be a bad idea for him to mention this. But I also think they're looking for excuses at this point. No one would have complained about the way things are being run at this point last year or even during this year's training camp and OTAs.

I challenge anyone to find me a team full of players who love their offseason programs. It just doesn't happen. Hopefully the coaches/players can work together to tweak the system in a way that everyone is happier, but you can't please all the people, all of the time.

I agree 100% with you on this. These guys are just making excuses for losing. Nobody was complaining last year. Now all of sudden "we are burned out", despite the fact that the team had the easiest trainig camp by far.

that;s the problem i don't wanna tweak it...i wannt turn it up...I'll give up my trip to camp next year to see them go back to Carlisle.....I don't want them happier, this past season was happier, Non contacts camps, less two adays, more practices at night, luxury hotels n crap, ...For all that money, and for that performance this year.... they can afford to to stay in a college dorm for two or three weeks...IMO they should get two weeks....perhaps a month. People get burned out when they work pull a schedule like Joe is doing...12-14 hour days everyday And i don't see him complaining...but remember the players get thier two days off...last year after the playoffs you couldn't get those guys outa town....now we're burned out..

I actually think the NFL should expand it's season and make OTAs mandatory, so i can't disagree more.

They did mention in the article the JC situation. For his sake I hope the off season is not too scaled back. he needs to get his timing down and master the playbook.

But they can also lead to burnout. Year-round football without much of a break from its mental and physical pounding can be tough to take.

Maybe they need more time during the offseason to count all of their money. That does take a while, you know. :)

For only a few million a season there is no way I would spend the majority of my time playing or practicing a game. I got kids to feed.

Funny.
I know Daniels and probably every single player in todays NFL would NOT want to go thru even 1 day of the late George Allens training camps. He took the players thru hell and back and then sorted out the men from the boys.
Shut up already. If he truely thinks the program is not suited for his needs, then all he has to do is some extra work outs each week to get his desired level of readiness. These are grown men making little boy excuses.
They ALL need to give that little extra this off season to get this crap of a season turned around next year..:Peace:

Hey all of those full contact, head on head hitting that takes place during those dreaded voluntary off-season workouts is why Daniels is looking washed up, and old.....
oh wait there is no hitting, the training camp was the shortest in the league, and we had the least amount of two-a-days in the league...
I am sorry this is sour grapes...daniels has had a tough year, and he has been niched up, but this has happened many times over his career (part of the reason chicago cut him).....
the voluntary off-season is not why this team is 5-10 (the weak training camp could have something to do with it).....
but the article makes at least one good point in that each player should have a unique lifting regiment....at the very least each position should have a different type of lifting regiment
HollywoodKolt

Are we 5-10 because we worked to long in the offseason or are we complaining about it because we're 5-10?
While I agree that different players need different lifting programs and they probably shouldn't have to be there the entire off season, I'll also say that Phillip Daniels never really ran through anybody, ever.
They're complaining because we're losing, last year guys said they couldn't wait to get back. Winning cures everything, so lets do some of it

I think the players should continue to practice at least through the superbowl. Why should they get time off while other teams are still working?
After that I'd give them 1 week off for every win they accumulated this season.

This isn't the old NFl where Dexter Manley had to work as a bank teller in the off season to make ends meat. I really think the Union, for the good of it's players who are young and have too much cash in hand, should make OTas mandatory. Daniels can cry all he wants about this but he is two years older and in 3 years with the defense he has barely been healthy, that is not the OTA's fault.

I was thinking the exact same thing. There is no way our kickers, qbs, wrs and linemen should be doing the exact same workout. That's ludicrous!
I wonder if they make them all do the same weight, too?
I can just see the weight room now:
Tony Spinosa - "Ok Samuels you go after Moss"
Chris Samuels - "But, coach he's only got 185 on the bench?"
Tony Spinosa - "Hurry up, Chris, Lloyd's waiting behind you! We don't have time to be switching plates and all. Plus it wouldn't be fair to the other guys if you got to lift more than them."

Daniels said he plans to address the matter with Gibbs next week, when the players have their exit interviews after Saturday night's season finale I think he should have done this in the reverse order if you ask me. Gibbs first then maybe the media.

Honestly, I'd be thrilled if Gibbs hired a Marine drill instructer to run the conditioning portion of practice. I think the problem is that we're coddling these guys too much.
