why can't we be more like the iggles front office nowadays. They draft well, sign young guys, don't over pay, keep cohesion.
now im not saying they are perfect. they don't spend enough in free agency to get them over the hill. the redskins clearly can do this and will always attempt to.
I wish we could combine the two ways, the redskins trying to find that one missing piece in free agency to get us another ring. And the iggles way of signing you guys long term before they hit the market, draft well, and stay together.
im behind gibbs and however his approach is, and by no means are the iggles perfect (as stated before they don;t want to spend the neccesary money sometimes to get a ring). Hopefully our way will be proven succesful, but so far it has not

We always get a why we can't do it like the iggles thread towards the end of the season. This one is on schedule.

It may be cliche, but it also rings of truth.

I called our local drive time sports show a couple of months ago to make the point that the Eagles FO had actually been irresponsible when they were $30mil under the cap and didn't sign any receivers to play alongside T.O. The fact that they had that much to spend, but allowed one player to blow up that team was irresponsible -- plain and simple.
It didn't go over well with the host. I guess his point was to just bash the Skins. I don't always agree with our spending, but Snyder is trying to win. To me, it is far more irresponsible to be as far under the cap as Philly typically is, and not sign the necessary players to put the team over the top. I don't see how Philly fans don't get pissed with that. The team is just putting more money in the owners pocket. I don't know, I'm just glad our team doesn't milk us only to not do what it takes to put the team over the top.

Why can't we spend less money and still have nothing to show for it??? WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY!

Interesting article about the eaglets. Thanks.
For detailed insight into how the Patriots manage salaries and anticipate injuries, etc, see this long article from the Globe a few days ago. It lifts the curtain on a fascinating science, really.

the Eagles are always the most under the cap of any team in the NFL.

please read my whole post, i agree the eagles don't spend enough to get them over the hump, but i like how they keep young guys they drafted and are good at scouting.

please reada the entire post i had. I said i like how we spend money to try and win, and how we go after the missing piece. But i admire how the eagles draft well, scout well, spend smart, and resign youg players long term before free agency. I DONT like how they don't spend money in free agency for that one last player needed to make the superbowl (Reciever the past few years). please read the entire post

While i think mirroring what the Eagles do is going to far I think the Skins have to find a better balance between FA and the draft. Being $30M under the cap is not a proud banner a team should wave - you probably won't win a Superbowl that way.
FA is great if your players play to expectations. If they don't, it really hampers your salary cap situation. The Skins seem to get as many FA busts as draft busts, but FA generally costs you more.
If I had my way the Skins would only add 1-2 significant FAs a year. I'm not including bottom of the roster moves like Fauria, Wade etc. Save the rest of the FA$ for re-signing players that you want to keep (Dockery, Cooley, Betts etc.). Then keep your draft picks. 2nd and 3rd round picks are good ways to get cheap quality depth that can step in and start in a year or two. The Skins have traded too many of these picks away in the last 3 years.
Gibbs mentioned he is going review the entire football operation in the off-season. I sure hope he considers his player acquisition strategy because, I believe, his reliance on FA is not working.

a few years ago they decided to do something in free agency so they went out and got a great receiver (TO) and a great pass rusher (Kearse). TO became a nightmare and Kearse is often injured.
they scare me. if they ever decide to spend some serious money other than giving it to McNabb or making bad decisions like TO, they could put together a really great team.

Yes I know the Eagles have been competative the last 5-6 years, but they still have never won a SB. Until the Eagles win 1...I mean 2.....doh!!!! 3 SB's then maybe we should look at the way the Eagles do things. We have been doing things different since Gibbs came back. We no longer are targetting older FA's, but FA's that are younger. The problems this year IMO had to do with Al Saunders new system and injuries. I am not ready to write off last years class of FA's until I see how they perform next year. Already we are starting to see dividends from Andre Carter. Antawn Randal El will be a nice player for us. Next year the Eagles will be a year older and I expect them to start dropping....at that point I will label them as.....Eagle Droppings:flower1: ....Ok I know terrible joke.

I agree that it's nice to lock up your own players, but the problem is that the Skins need to have players worth resigning first. It's not worth giving out big contracts just to say you kept your own.

I read the whole post. And the eagles have exactly what to show for their method? Nothing.

true, it's not worth keeping guys like Patten, Koz, Nemo...while the young guys never get a chance or else they get claimed by other teams.
