I hope it's okay that I made a separate thread for this, but I just wanted to make sure that people get this address as being the page to go to for downloading or viewing the Monk for the Hall video.
Just wanted to thank Bandwagon for hosting this and making this page. Most appreciated!
So, here is the link. Feel free to pass this link around to anyone you see fit, and hopefully I'll hear from Shapiro soon and he'll let me know whether he thinks it's okay to either send this link to the HOF voters or send them actual DVDs (which I'd prefer).
Thanks, guys!

i wanted to wait to watch the video until you were 100% complete and i must say, it was well worth the wait. its enough to make you>>> you did an excellent job of putting together the clips, stats and comments and just watching it makes me even angrier that the guy isnt in the hall yet. i must admit that it was difficult watching him in jet green. amazing job tom, amazing job!.....

The video is awesome, WWD so don't take this the wrong way... but...
I would have gotten a domain name for this and hosted that single page in a clean white background. Why? Because, to me, hosting it at redskinsdb.com or on pages with a Redskins theme somewhat bolsters the argument that it's mainly Redskin fans who are pushing for Monk to get into the HOF.
Plenty of great domain names are still available for this and the whole setup would be pretty cheap. Here's a few domain names I checked out that are still available:
monk4thehall.com
MonkForHOF.com

Not at all, Rich, and I appreciate the comments. I don't mind where regular fans view the video. But if I direct HOF voters to a site, I do think it's probably best that it is as clean as possible.

I think this works better, but once again, thanks to Bandwagon for designing the graphic and for initially hosting this thing. He unfortunately has an agreement that dictates the templates he uses with any page he hosts. He's still hosting the vid, though, for which I am MOST appreciative.
As for the e-mail link, I am all for it, but just hold off from too much deluging until I hear from Len Shapiro. He told me that he thinks sometimes e-mail campaigns backfire with these guys, but I think this one would be a lot different, so if I don't hear back from him by the end of the week, I'll just say let's get the link out in a more widespread way.
Stay tuned!

And I agree with you and Shapiro. I wouldn't advocate emialing these guys directly with the link. But... starting an email with the link that floated around the Internet for a few months would be a pretty cool idea. Who knows, it might even get some time on ESPN if it's successful enough. ;)

I was very much in my formative years during the 80's and Football made a huge impression on me, but it was Monk who was my hero. I really appreciated the way he went to work.
What the video really captures is how gaudy his achievements and numbers were at the time, they were massive. 820 receptions was a massive achievement at the time.
They dont seem that now because of what the passing offense has become these days. The amount of contact Monk put up with would have seen a penalty almost every play these days. It is why I say if Monk began his career in 1990 instead of 1980, he would have easily 300 more catches if not more.
This video is a treasure that I will always keep.

I never understood the whole "820 8-yard hitches" argument against Monk's selection. When I think of a one-dimensional posession receiver, I think of Keyshawn Johnson or even L. Coles now. I can't think of more than a couple times I saw K. Johnson run past someone on a go-route for a touchdown.
I remember many such catches for Monk. Heck, he had 2 61-yard touchdowns against the Falcons in one game...when he was like 33. This is an armument put forth by a bunch of shills and hacks. A 13.0 YPC average does not represent a one-dimensional possession receiver. Will all the blocking he did, he was sometimes a TE-hybrid.
Unfortunately I also think Michael Irvin should be selected. Maybe this will be the year for them both.

WWD I have split the video into three sections for You Tube consumption. If you say you are happy to go on I will, otherwise I will hold back.
Flave, let me know how you've split it up.
I've split it up into six sections and will be uploading each section to my site this evening. I was thinking of putting each of those up on YouTube as well. It's basically the intro and the five arguments as separate sections.
I have a "See the full video at www.Monk4theHall.com" tag at the end of each section, too, to drive people to the high quality version. If you can add that to the end of your segments, that'd be cool. Otherwise, if you don't mind, let me just go ahead and put these segments up.
Thanks!

If you have split it please put it up. I am pure amateur at these things and what I did was split the whole into three. The Intro being first then the arguments split into two sections. The split is roughly two six minute sections and an eight minute section for part three.
So please do yours because it is clear to me that if people see this they will understand.

Fantastic Video. I hadn't had time to watch it for a couple of days, but it's wonderful. I was youg during the peak of his career, so my memory is not the best, but seeing these clips further cemented what I did remember. He plays just like Marvin Harrison: quiet, consistent, can run any route and make any catch.

Tom, I wanted to say one other thing.
I was lurking over at ExtremeSkins and noticed that your Monk Vid was posted. Wow, it was great to read that everyone over there was just as moved as we are here at HR. Then again, how couldn't they be?
I was unaware until seeing one of your posts over there that YOU did the voice over on the video. And I wanted to stress that the fact that you "havent had alot of experience at that" actually helped your cause I think. One of the first things I noticed about the voiceover (without know you did it) was that it was very unassuming. It wasn't the voice of someone trying to sound like a TV announcer or Radio DJ. Rather, it sound alot like the voice of an attorney (not the ambulance-chasing type but rather a dignified, truthful one), simply and calmly separating fact from fiction. I noticed it right away, and it certainly lends credence to the piece.
Again, great job man. It looks like word is spreading!

I haven't heard from him yet, but hopefully tomorrow. I just emailed him to check to make sure he got the DVD.
I sent him the DVD on Wednesday (Post offices were closed Monday and Tuesday), so he should've gotten it by Thursday, Friday at the latest. He lives close to me.
I'm really hoping he'll be willing to personally drive voters to the Web site or, much more preferable, show them the entire DVD during his presentation. Or, give me info on how to get DVDs into each voter's hands.
I'll keep you all updated. Hope he responds soon, because time is tight!! If I don't hear from him very soon, I'll start taking matters into my own hands as far as getting DVDs out.

*I wonder how sincere peter king's reversal is and how much of it was tied to the fact Michael "the Cokehead Cowboy" being on this year's eligibility list?
I guarantee king will be all out in front of a Erving from Irving (or vice-versa)

Why does Tags get an exemption? He should have to wait 5 years like everyone else.
Any fan may nominate any player, coach or contributor who has been connected with pro football simply by writing to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The only restriction is that a player must have been retired at least five years before he can be considered. For a non-player, there is no mandatory retirement period, but a coach must be retired before he may be considered. Every nomination of an eligible candidate received will be processed and forwarded to the Hall of Fame’s Board of Selectors.

I have never understood the wait part. IMO, It should not take any amount of time for the selectors (sports reporters) to determine a player's greatness. If they can determine a coaches and non-players status immediately, then they should be able to do accordingly for players.
I could probably make a good argument that HoF players who unretire reflect past years. Just look at our own coach.....his HoF credentials reflect the 1.0 era. The 5 year wait is really a mechanism designed by the selectors to discourage players from unretiring, IMO.

Perhaps. But, then again, the 5 day waiting period for buying a gun is in place to keep people from making rash decisions too. So that you don't go and retire people, lol. Emotion plays in, so I can see the logic behind it. I just think it should be uniform. Either make the 5 year requirement for all or for none.

I'm going to be ticked if Kuechenberg gets in. Not that he may or may not deserve to be in the HoF, but it's crazy how every few years they have to go digging through the '72 dolphins roster to find another hall of famer. Or dig up another 70's Steeler to put in. I don't know all of the players that well on the list, but my picks would be Monk, Grimm, Thurman Thomas, Bruce Matthews, Andre Reed, Gary Zimmerman and Ray Guy. It's crazy that someone like Irvin gets so much press, and then you have a guy like Andre Reed ignored (obviously, not to mention Monk).

Rod Woodson just said he would picket the Hall if Monk does not get in this year. There are way too many people publicly backing him for anyone in their right mind to vote against him.

The HOF committee will be committing suicide if they ignore him again this year.

He's a hell of a player who I unfortunately don't feel belongs in the HOF. He only had 5 1000 yards seasons, 3 pro bowls and 68 touchdowns in 16 seasons. He's 6th all time on the receptions list, but he's 11th on receiving yards and hes tied for 30th on the TD reception list with Rod Smith and Raymond Berry. Berry is in the HOF but he also did that in 13 seasons in a run heavy era on 309 fewer receptions(granted Johnny U was throwing him the ball). Does anyone here actually think Rod Smith belongs in the HOF? Granted I'd put Monk or Grimm in over a lot of people but none of these guys belong there to begin with people like Gale Sayers yea I know amazing in the open field but he only played 7 years and only twice went over 1000 yards, Joe Namath 47 more INT's than TD's, or Lynn Swann who didn't even have 3 catches a game. Unfortunately the selection process is badly flawed and a lot of players who should be in it like Maxie Baughan who played 12 years and went to 9 pro bowls or Joe Klecko who while he only went to 4 pro bowls he did it at three positions(NT, DT, DE).

You're gonna base a HOF nomination on Pro Bowl appearances? You might as well be counting number of television commercials appeared in. The HOF is NOT supposed to be a popularity contest.
As for your arguments you obviously didn't watch the movie

I'm actually very glad you brought up this opinion, as this is why I made the video featured on the link of the first page of this thread.
I'd love it if you would watch the video and then let us know if it swayed your opinion in any way.

Well, if Art doesn't belong in the hall of fame, then someone oughta go to Canton and remove the busts of John Stallworth, Lynn Swann, Charlie Taylor, Bobby Mitchell, Charlie Joiner and James Lofton. Because Art was better than all those guys.

Yup, next year we get to start hearing crap like "Well, he was good, but he never had a signature interception. This is the hall of fame, not the hall of very good for a very long time......"
Or, "It's about impact. Deion had much more impact than Green. He changed the way the game is played.... Offensive coordinators never had to game-plan against Green....."

Art was not better than Charlie Taylor and I'd argue against him being better than Bobby Mitchell as well.

I finally heard from Shapiro! And yet, I'm not totally sure what to make of his response. I asked him if he'd received the DVD yet, if he planned to use it, and what his thoughts were. His response is as follows (spelling and all):
Tom, Got it, anmd we'll give it another good go next month.
Len
I don't know if that means he's using the piece, if he likes the piece, or what. I don't know if he means, "We'll show it again next month" or just "We'll make another push for Monk next month." Why is it so hard for people just to answer simple questions? Oh well, at least he has it, so there's not much more I can do.
I did send him a follow-up, asking if he thought it would be beneficial to send copies to the other voters or email them about the site. We'll see what he says.
On another front, someone who knows Monk emailed me, and I'm sending them a DVD to give to him directly. Very excited about this especially!

Wow, he was quick to respond to that last one. I asked him about e-mailing the voters with the site or just in general, and he said:
Tom,
Trust me, the fan e-mails have been a huge turn-off. Just let us do the
best we can, asnd I suspect this could be the year.

The hosts had to bring his name up for him to mention Monk. Same old story, he was saying Clark was the receiver everyone feared and that Irvin and Thurman Thomas were the two names that stood out the most. He said he had discussed Monk with King many times (which makes it sound as if they all bow to the queen). It just didn't sound good to me.

WWD, I've told you more than once how much I personally appreciate your efforts in making the video (which was absolutely awesome), but that response gives us a pretty clear view of why the voting process is so screwed up. These writers, who despite having played in the exact number of NFL games as you or I, think they are the real protagonists in this situation, and act like they can do whatever they want with their vote. What in the hell does it matter how many emails a writer received when it comes to determinig whether any player was good enough to make the HOF??? So what's the deal here? Since the redskins fanbase sends too many emails or doesn't like a particular writer, that writer is not gonna vote for Redskins players?

The problem is that a lot of the media personalities thrive off of antagonizing fanbases. They seriously love it. Whenever Skip Bayless is subbing on the Jim Rome Show, he spends half the time talking about the Ohio St. Luckeyes, and how they didn't deserve to be Miami in the national championship. It's like, dude, give it a rest. The joke isn't that funny, and it's five frickin' years old! I swear, he does it everytime, and like fish on a hook, the OSU fans have to call in and whine. I'm sure these HoF voters love the Monk situation, because every winter they basically get a week of vacation. All they have to do is re-print the same crappy column about why Art isn't a HoF'er that they wrote years ago.

Yep, I agree, and I went nuts about this last year when I heard the same thing from voters I was emailing with. I mean, how can ANY self-respecting voter allow themselves to be swayed by what the FAN BASE does??? That is just beyond disgusting right there. It shouldn't matter how many fans call you an idiot. Art Monk never said a word. It's about Monk, not his fans, right?
Yeah, I was really disappointed to hear that again. Someone needs to clean house with those morons.

Whichever way this voting ends up going, I think it would be really great if Monk got a chance to see your video. It would make all the hard work you put in worthwhile IMO, and at least it would let him know how much the Skins fanbase cares about him.

These antagonistic sports writers thrive off controversy. Why? Because it sells.
The most effective means of swaying their opinion is boycotting their product. Once I found out 2 years ago that P. King and dr. Z were the poster boys for the Anti-Art movement I simply cancelled my SI subscription and quit visiting their web-site. As long as Art is not in the hall SI will not receive my business. I urge all Monk supporters to do the same. If there are enough boycotters to effect their profitability they will do the just thing.

I've been boycotting SI the magazine for over 3 years now. I won't even pick up one to read when waiting in a lobby. I still occassionally click on their links to read a story but only rarely.

I'm feeling you. I gave up on them (SI) in late 2004, when it was CLEAR BEFORE the season even ended, they weren't even going to cast a vote for him. Some made it very clear early, so we could keep our party favors on ice.
All I know is when it happens, its a road trip. Mapped out and ready. 6 - 7 hours for the HOF with a Skins intro, I am always game!

Yeah I have that feeling as well.
They just need to ask probably the greatest WR who ever played about Greens abilities covering him.
No one really was able to shut down Jerry Rice but Green contained him better than any CB I ever seen...That includes DS.
I know the last year sanders played for the falcons he did not even line up across from Rice on most plays.
Green always lined up against the best WR on the field no matter what side he was on.DS can never claim he did that even in his supposed primetime.:Peace:

I got to admit - his curt, non-detailed responses are pretty discouraging. I know you reasons for playing it safe, but there is part of me that thinks the DVD should just be sent directly to all voters. I am sure e-mails are a turn off, when you consider the ones that say "Monk was the greatest receiver EVER", etc...but your e-mail wouldnt be one that rambles are speaks in generalities...it would simply provide them with the visual evidence to watch.
Well, whatever happens, you efforts are still amazing.

Thanks, SS. Yeah, I'm not waiting around for him anymore. I've also been really disappointed in his lack of enthusiasm about this whole thing. Very disillusioning for me. But, as Keino says, I sent five of the DVDs out yesterday before the holiday, and I'm sending all the rest out Monday night, so they'll go out first thing Tuesday morning. I probably will also follow up with e-mails to all of the voters and tell them it's coming as well as giving them the site.
I've also been told that David Elfin is also representing Washington so he will also have something to say during the presentation, so I"m going to try targeting him and letting him know about the video, too. Maybe he'll have more pull/interest/whatever. He's written some glowing articles on Monk over the years.
