WTEM 980 AM radio is reporting that the Redskins have acquired Denver Broncos DT Lional Dalton in exchange for a conditional fifth round pick. The trade is conditioned on Dalton passing a physical.

Well lets hope he can come in and contribute right away...from his stats he looks like the forst legit starter at DT that we have.

It's good that we did not have to give up one of our halfbacks as well... I guess

He better be worth it... i didn't think we'd give a 5th... i wonder if the conditions make it higher or lower, probably lower...

The thing about it is being that we didn't trade one of the halfbacks (Betts ...lol) than it may come out that we have to release one of the backs and not get anything for it. Now that would be bad. We would rather trade than release. However we may be able to trade (Betts ...lol) for a third round pick or something.

I like the fact that we got this guy. I just wonder what the hell was going on with the curve ball they tried to throw at us last week? Oh well it didn't work.

Let's get is but on the field thursday night.

Dalton in, Cannida and Molden out. Life in the NFL, baby.

Dalton agreeing to chop $700K from his salary this year probably expedited matters.

Yup. I love this trade. If he plays in more than 40% of the games, my bet is, he will be worth a fifth rounder.

I was surprised to see Molden in the cuts, and even more surprised to see Leonard Stephens.

Patrick

I told you we'd have to surrender a 5th round pick (another thread). I think cutting Cannida might turn out to be a mistake. Molden no big deal.

Green-Is-Good
08-26-2003, 11:50 AM
I was surprised to see Molden as well. I thought that if we were to cut a DB, we would cut Terrell.

PennSkinsFan
08-26-2003, 11:54 AM
Why Terrell. We need his depth at Safety, even if he does not start, he provides good depth and excellent special teams play.

Me, too. I was surprised Stephens wasn't cut last year.

Congrats, ya'll got your man and only for a conditional fifth rounder if he logs 40%.

Don't worry about him being in shape, he's cut down to 309 and was part of the Marvin Lewis D with the Baltimore RatBirds so he should know the system (that's if you haven't changed it since Marvin left).

Anyways, you got a very good two down player.

Thanks. For a fifth round pick that is the most we could expect.

Appreciate it Dr. Funk. I'm pretty happy with this move. I'm glad it was finally done. Seems like it lasted forever.....

Anyway we could have Portis too? lol That guys is going to be a star!

Now we go from awful to not so awful on the d-line. Hopefully now at least Dalton and Chase/Haley can protect our lb's. Something that their former systems required them to do alot.

hail2skins
08-26-2003, 12:26 PM
Yes, he and Chase will push the others for playing time/starting. I'm glad it's over with though. It becomes a seventh if he doesn't play in 40%. You think the Skins will be keeping him out on some plays intentionally?

Green-Is-Good
08-26-2003, 12:30 PM
I hope not. And besides, we already gave up our 7th rounder for Chase.

Brett A
08-26-2003, 12:37 PM
We have a seventh rounder from Green Bay for David Brandt thats how we can make trades contingent on 2 7th round picks.

Brett

If Dalton can play well, he'll get as much turf time as he can handle.

Green-Is-Good

I still would not bench him PURPOSELY

Bauman obvoiusly beat Moulden out of the job this preseason. I think Bauman had 7 or 8 tackles alone during the Raven's game. I'm glad to see some draft talent finally get a shot at that nickle spot.

Cannida? Who cares! He is obviously our weakest DT...so no loss there.

Does anyone think that Dalton could be a pro bowl alternate?

CarMike
08-26-2003, 12:49 PM
If Dalton can come in and make a difference, I don't see how we couldn't keep him on the field. If he's that good, I'd gladly part ways with a 5th rounder.

In the end its going to another boring draft day next year......at least on day #2....

good move for our defense, hope we can trade a rb to recoup the draft pick.

I was thinking the same thing REDMAN. I don't see how we're going to carry 4 RBs.....

Well, we are down to 2 TE's when I thought we would carry 3 so maybe that will open something up. Also take into account that no one really expected Molden to be let go, so that's another spot there. I think that Spurrier has it pretty well laid out on how he will do it barring a surprise or two.

SkinsCT

I don't think that Dalton will be a pro-bowl alternate unless he becomes such a dominant force that he cannot be overlooked. His stats are not going to be great. When he was in Baltimore he never got above 20 stops a year, probably averaged 1-1.5 sacks a year. I say, someone sit him down at the picnic table and start bringing over them ribs, eat up big boy. Keep those big uglies off our playmakers. The pieces are starting to come together for a very solid, perhaps very good, team.

Spence
08-26-2003, 01:30 PM
Spurrier may believe that tight end and fullback are sufficiently similar in his offense that he can use Bryan Johnson at either position. He's probably correct. Pound for pound I'd say Bryan Johnson is the best run blocker on the team.

Who knew the Molden cut was coming? Who are the 4th and 5th CBs now?
On a better note- Almost everything I have wanted so far has been happening, from getting Randy Thomas, to trading our pick for Price or Coles, getting a top flight KR and place kicker, to keeping the 4 Rbs and the 6WRs. I missed out on dumping our punter for the Raiders' Shane Lechler.

Wade Davis and Ade Jimoh are still on the roster so I'd guess they are the #4 and #5 cornerbacks right now. David Terrell started out as a cornerback and could easily slide back there in a pinch. [Let's hope it never comes to that.]

Did you post your wish list here at hR, Cam? If so, maybe ol' Vinny was watching...;)

camasterton
08-26-2003, 01:51 PM
Yes but not in wish form. I researched Thomas back in November and talked about him here. The 1st rounder for a WR in March. Although I suggested we trade down in the round first then offer Price/Coles (That is not allowed). The rest I hope he did hear too.
btw I wished for Canidate and Betts to get 1000 yards. Iffy to be Pro-Bowl level and the Skins to win 12 in the reular season!

If Darryl Gardner was overlooked last year...then it will take a miracle for Dalton to get the nod. There are too many dominant DTs in the NFC right now and too few Pro Bowl spots available.

We still have three TEs, don't we? I dont remember Ware being released.

Skins57
08-26-2003, 02:38 PM
I don't know if this could happen or not but McCants is almost big enough to be a tight end (recieving) and that might add another roster sopt if he is a 3rd TE and 5 or 6th reciever

Spence
08-26-2003, 02:46 PM
A Mikhael Ricks-type tight end, Jeff? Interesting thought. I think Darnerian would need to put on about 20 pounds. It'd be even better if he could grow two or three inches, as well, but let's crawl before we walk.

Maybe I'm in the minority, but I think that cutting Moulden was a MISTAKE. He was a decent 4th DB. Damn, he was a NFL STARTER recently!!! How does this make sense? Unless there is some kind of Salary cap benefit, I just don't get it. Something about having "Wade Davis" playing significantly in dime packages and the like kinda scares me.

camasterton
08-26-2003, 03:25 PM
The cap money created by offing Jones, Molden and some others should be significant. That may be a gamble the FO is taking. The Team looks extremely young right now. If you take out Bryan Barker and Bruce Smith, the average player age is pre-pubescent!
(in, it's like a hundred)

WRSK1NS
08-26-2003, 05:15 PM
I think the FO has done a good job this year to solidify many weak positions. Even though the Molden cut is surprising I guess we will have to trust them on this one. I think The Danny has finally learned his lesson.

JoeDaSchmoe
08-26-2003, 05:42 PM
Well, really, how solid does the #4 corner spot have to be? He'll only come onto the field in Quarter situations, and we may bring a second-string safety (Terrell) in instead of a third-string corner, anyway. Even I would trust Terrell against a fourth wide-out.

The Dalton trade is very good. With Dalton and Chase/Haley/Zellner/etc in the middle, I think our linebacking corps can make up whatever slack is left.

I agree. I feel pretty confident with Bauman, Jimoh, and Terrell at back up corners. Terrell fits being a CB better anyway and shoudl just be moved back there, but he gives us starting depth at CB and S. I actually am liking the middle fo the Line right now. Chase and Dalton give us 619 pounds of clogging th emiddle. Haley and Holsey provide excellent dpeth, and Zellner can move back and concentrate on End.
