Denny Hamlin is on the B list this season? I thought he'd be an A lister for sure. Guess they are predicting the sophmore slump, if that exists in NASCAR.

Denny is 3rd in points in '06 and he gets surpassed for the "A" list by guys like Biffle and Edwards? BS

Plus, I think its crazy how a rookie like Montoya gets on the B list. All rookies shoudl sit in "C".

I hate how Yahoo separates these drivers. :banghead:

The reason Eddie Haskel, er...I mean Carl Edwards had a sophmore slump is because the entire Roush Racing organziation had their own slump. They were swapping crew chiefs at will last season, and Biffle had the exact same drop off in performance.

I think Gibbs racing, which hasn't changed a thing for all three cars, will be just as strong in '07. Denny will be just fine.

To Mr. Haskel's credit, he has said he's sorry about the making tony bleed comment and wants to start fresh this season.

The A list shouldn't have anyone who didn't win a race last year.

Its far from over for both of them.

2 Weeks ago, Tony said on his Sirius radio show that the next time a driver tells the media he is going to "make Tony bleed" he better be prepared to do it right there and then. He also joked that he has been saving up the 50K to pay for the fine in such case...

A week later, Tony reported that Eddie Haskel left him a voicemail in response telling him to "pick the place or the time" and he will be there.

Both have claimed to "be over it" recently, but there is still lingering anger.

Axe - First off....there is no such thing as being a "bigger wuss than #24". Just not possible. Secondly...when did this Tony/Robbie incident take place? Must have been over 4-5 years ago. I think Tony has more self confidence since then, and I personally believe he would gladly take someone on if the challange presented itself.

BTW - the "aw shucks" persona of Edwards is really poured on in front of the cameras. I think the guy is a bit more passionate when the cameras are turned off.

Kenny~ After seeing Carl on the cover of SI sporting the 8-pack, I'd probably call him the favorite in a fight with Tony...BUT...Tony has really trimmed down the past few months and I'll bet he would give him a damn good fight.

I don't blame you guys for liking Kenseth. He is probably the only guy I remotely like from Roush. (Now that Martin is gone) I think he would look good driving the #18 for JGR some day. ;) The big question is who has Axe picked as his replacement favorite driver?

1]Agreed.#24 is probably the sissiest, but he's getting better.
2]Yes,it happened a few years ago.Robby Gordon would've punked the little #20 too.
3]My new driver?Undecided.
I like Biffle and Jr. for now.

I'm a Ford man too, though not as much as I used to be.
I'm not a Stewart fan but I respect his talent. Having attended a few races in the last 6 years, there were two drivers that did things on the track that no one else did. The late Dale Earnhardt Sr and Tony Stewart. I never cared much for either but I have the utmost respect for them. Getting to see either or both in my case, was a treat. They both put their cars in places no one else could. I can't really explain it because it is something you have to see.

Anyhow, I would like to inform Axe and rskinsfan10 that my middle name is Kenneth and that is my fathers first name. And though I'm a Matt Kenseth fan now, I will team up with dj_stouty in this current war of words. If pudge (Tony) so much as farts on tv, I could switch sides though. No matter how much I respect his talent or the fact that he drives for Gibbs, it is still a Chevy and I would never buy any product of their's produced after 1969.

As driving goes,I agree that Tony is in elite company.
Like it or not,I'd have to add Jeff Gordon too, even though Hendricks Motor Sports has been known to cheat. That said, both are whiners and crybabies.

Earnhardt was a real man,[I despised him too] and he'd have kicked both there tails at the same time in a fight.

Thanks, Rich. I could certainly use some smack backup.

And I agree with you about Tony. The guy does some boneheaded stuff from time to time, but the guy can flat out drive a car. Just this offseason, he won two ARCA races and beat 220+ drivers at the Chili Bowl driving Indoor Midgets.

Axe - I'm not sure if Tony could beat up Cousin Carl "Eddie Haskel" Edwards, but I'm pretty sure he could beat up Robbie Gordon.

Kenny2~ Rich and I will take you guys on in a Hell-in-a-Cell-Strap-Match-Loser-Leaves-Town-No-Holds-Barred-NoTapOut Match. Here is how it pans out: We fight vigorously until 1/2 way through the match, at which time, Hawgz comes out of the crowd, rolls into the ring wearing his rainbow Gordon tights, and starts swinging a chair at everyone. Then, all four of us gang up on him, kick him around and bloody him up. And as the four of us are "all smiles" heading back to the locker room, FatHead appears in an Orange cape, jumps you guys and helps Rich and I finish the job. ;)

I'll admit...our trash talking was minimized last season, for some reason. We need to get that back on track. I probably talked more smack in season one since I destroyed you guys and pretty much had the Championship as early as the Brickyard. ;) I'll get back to that form very soon...

I go away for the weekend and I come back to see that I am now bloodied laying in the corner of the ring in my rainbow tights. Well I am gonna start drinking milk and one day you guys won't have me to kick around anymore. :sfight: I shouldn't have to remind anyone that a few years back Stewart had his shot at Gordon in the garage when Gordon came up to him after a race and grabbed him by the collar of his suit. He did nothing but choose to look like a very pudgy deer in the headlights.

Even as a toddler he was proud of who he was. If you asked him his name, he would say it like this: "Dale! . . . Earnhardt! . . . Junior!"

By the time he was 3 -- soon after his parents divorced, and his father hit the big time -- I saw, up close, how hard it was to be Dale Earnhardt Jr.

He is 32 now. It hasn't gotten any easier. And I don't think it's going to -- until and unless he frees himself from Dale Earnhardt Inc.

The issue teeters now, in his ongoing negotiations for a new contract.

The only thing new about his long-difficult relationship with his stepmother, Teresa Earnhardt, is that it's out in the open at last.

It has boiled over into the media in recent weeks since he acknowledged to reporters at a Daytona test session that the relationship "ain't a bed of roses," and that it "has always been very black-and-white, very strict and in-your-face."

There. He said it. He finally said what he has stepped to the precipice of saying so many times since his father's death in 2001.

Indeed, he said, "The relationship we have today is the same relationship we had when I was 6 years old when I moved into that house with Dad and her. It hasn't gotten worse over the last couple of years or couple of months . . . the way I felt about her then is the way I feel about her now."

That was his first public response to her remark in an interview with the Wall Street Journal, published Dec. 14, that "the ball is in his court to decide whether he wants to be a NASCAR driver or whether he wants to be a public personality."

"I really didn't appreciate it," he said at Daytona after nearly a month -- on top of years and years -- of biting his tongue. He was, if nothing else, bewildered -- all NASCAR drivers must be public personalities to please their sponsors.

This week, sympathetic peers, particularly Jeff Gordon and Kevin Harvick, fueled the uproar with comments in defense of their friend during NASCAR's preseason media tour of team compounds in North Carolina.

Harvick called Teresa "a deadbeat owner" to one group of reporters. Perhaps he meant "absentee" owner because she rarely comes to races while most other owners show up every Sunday.

More biting still was Harvick's remark that "it's not just a money pit [where] somebody says, 'Well, I can make money off Dale Jr., I can make money off [the name of] Dale Earnhardt . . .' "

Gordon, while expressing hope that Junior will stay at DEI, added his doubts: "I think it [the public squabble] has gone too far. When it gets ugly in the media, it's usually very, very difficult to rebound from that."

Gordon didn't let up. It was as if the pressure cooker friends had sensed surrounding Junior for years was blowing all its steam at once.

"He can go to any team [in a heartbeat to Richard Childress, his father's treasured friend and longtime car owner]. He can start his own team [Junior has one in development, or he could buy control of DEI from his stepmother]. He's got the sponsors who are willing to back him [representatives of his primary sponsor, Budweiser, have acknowledged privately for years that they'll go with him wherever he wants], and the fans that are going to back him [Junior is clearly NASCAR's most popular driver].

"He's really in the power position," Gordon said, "and if Teresa isn't recognizing that, then shame on her."

Teresa Earnhardt is generally closed off to the media. The December interview was beyond rare. It's impossible to give her side of the story when she won't tell it.

Even at the height of the storm (so far), Wednesday night at the DEI media function, she gave a perfunctory welcoming speech of less than a minute, took no questions, and left.

And there sat Junior on a stage, before hundreds of reporters and dozens of TV cameras, to face the barrage of questions about the relationship.

Told of Harvick's earlier comments, Earnhardt paused, then said, "Man, you're killin' me." Translation: Please, please don't ask me to talk about this anymore.

The body language was uncomfortable, but the face was expressionless. And I had a flashback to some 27 years ago at a race-weekend dinner at the Darlington Country Club in South Carolina.

The little kid, his father and I were sitting together. Someone was making a speech. The only little boy in the room couldn't see over all the adults. So he stood up on his chair to get a better view.

His father was saying something to me and then turned around and saw Dale Jr. up on the chair. Profanely, Senior told the kid to sit down, and drove home the point with a quick, sharp spanking.

That kid didn't shed a tear. Didn't so much as frown. Silently, obediently, he sat down. With no expression on his face.

His father as a budding star was a hard-bitten, hungry man who couldn't always turn off the intensity.

Back when the toddler proclaimed himself to be "Dale! . . . Earnhardt! . . . Junior!" his father was a struggling racer, often running on borrowed money, sometimes spinning out other dirt-trackers just to finish well enough to pay off the 90-day notes and maybe buy some groceries.

The father and mother -- Dale Earnhardt's second wife, Brenda -- were together then. Big E told me years later that at the time, "We probably should have been on welfare."

The strain of doing without things led to divorce in 1977. Soon afterward, in a tragic irony for Brenda, Dale Earnhardt grew rich and famous. She gave him custody of Dale Jr. and his older sister, Kelley.

In 1979 the Intimidator-to-be brought a new girlfriend to a race at Riverside, Calif. Her name was Teresa Houston. While she was briefly away from the table at dinner one night, Earnhardt nudged me and said, "Cute lil' ol' girl, ain't she, Hinton? I think I might marry her."

They dated fairly steadily for some years, and married in 1982. During the courtship, a nanny Dale Jr. and Kelley loved -- "Annie the Nanny," we all called her -- was let go.

Soon it was evident that the real business force inside Dale Earnhardt Inc. was Teresa.

Coincidentally or not, the relationship of Dale Jr. and Kelley became almost Dickensian: They looked out for each other as if each was all the other had.

After Dale Jr. was sent to military school, Kelley worried so much about him that she enrolled in the same academy, just to make sure he was OK.

After he was wealthy, Dale Earnhardt said to me, "T'resa's a smart girl, ain't she, Hinton?"

I couldn't say I really knew her any better then than I did at that first dinner in California. And I can't say I know her any better now.

I do know several people, who either still work at, or have left, DEI, who have privately expressed enormous frustration with her management style -- which is largely, it seems, to let matters sit, and sit, and sit, while Dale Jr. stews on the back burner.

Few have been willing to go on the record. But Tony Eury Sr. -- Dale Jr.'s uncle, and the architect of the No. 8 Budweiser team -- told me once that "Richie [Gilmore, DEI's general manager] and I told Teresa that if she's going to spend four or five weeks straight on that boat of hers [a 150-foot yacht commissioned by the late Intimidator], she's going to have to let us run the company."

The situation seems still in limbo: absenteeism with a refusal to relinquish control.

In these contract negotiations, as always, Dale Jr.'s primary adviser, confidante and de facto agent is his sister, Kelley Earnhardt Elledge.

Still, they look out for each other above all else.

Gordon is right about one thing: Reconciliation won't come easy.

And all the liberation of Dale Earnhardt Jr. would take is a cellphone call to Childress, who still owns the rights to the number "3."

COMMENTARY

Ed Hinton can be reached at ehinton@orlandosentinel.com.

I like th part where Happy Harvick said that Theresa was "a dead bear owner" which she is. I personally would`nt mind him ride for Childeress if J.R. and Theresa cant fix this mess soon.

As much as would have liked to see Mark win that race, that would have been wrong to throw a caution when the leaders were in sight of the finish line. I prefer the winner to have won while racing. NASCAR did it right this time, IMO.

That's fine if they don't give the fans the indication that the field will be frozen if an accident occurs while they are in overtime. I've never heard anyone say that the only time this doesn't apply is if the finish line is less then a half mile away. I just want them to be consistent, that's all.

Yeah, I just read your post in the other thread and I totally agree with your view on NASCAR being inconsistent. My understanding is that under the "overtime" green-white-checker condition, the field should be froze if an incident occurs and the race is over. I don't like that though and I was glad to see that not come into play, even if it is part of their rules.
To add to this, Mark himself said that he was waiting for the caution to come out, so it would appear to me that not even the drivers know what to expect from France and Co. under those circumstances.Mark did make a comment about it and he has a valid contention but only because of NASCAR's ever-changing rules.
I don't think Mark ever let up. He and Harvick were side by side going all out and Harvick got him by about a foot and a half.

Yeah, if it was a case where the were disabled cars, sitting on the front stretch, ahead of the leaders, then you have to throw the caution. But that wasn't the case this time. There are a lot of gray areas in NASCAR's rules and I understand that in some cases, like this one, it is better to make a judgement call. Other times though, like assessing penalties, it would be better to have a written guideline, to insure fairness.

I was rooting for Mark but it was bittersweet. I would have loved to see him win but would have been sad that it happened for another team and a Chevy at that. I can't imagine the psychological tug-of-war you were going through.

Damn...when the top placing owner gets only 218 points, you know it was a "wreck fest".

LOL at Rockaroo...who never picked a "C driver".

I think NASCAR is going to throw away the rule book anytime a two-some or three-some of drivers are less than one turn away from the start/finish line. It makes for better racing. See the truck race on Friday night. Johnny Benson passed Kvapil for 2nd below the yellow line and wasn't penalized...just like the wreck didn't force a yellow finish tonight. I'm glad...because you don't get that many photo finishes in one weekend very often. And I agree that Martin didn't let off the gas either.

At least one of them, I would think. It would be pretty hard for whoever is starting 4th to overtake 3 cars on the first lap.

Tomorrow is going to be a wreckfest. This is a race that you cross your fingers on. The guy with the good car that avoids trouble all day and has some Vegas luck with him will win. After today's race, you have to consider Jeff Burton as a factor. He drove the wheels off that car to win the Busch race.

Wreckfast may be an understatement. This is NOT the same old Vegas track.

Yesterday proves that these drivers are not quite comfortable with the track changes and tire changes. Even guys who I consider the "smoothest" drivers in NASCAR (Kenseth and Kahen) managed to wreck their cars on their own. Apparently the tires Goodyear brought to the track are the hardest tires used in Cup History. Unfortunately, all of the cup teams tested on a softer tire, so many are back to the drawing board. Which really sucks for those outside of the top 35, because MANY of them got held up in Tech/Inspection, that they didn't get in a full practice, thus making it even harder for them to qualify for the show. NASCAR needs to rethink the timeframe of inspection versus that first practice...ESPECIALLY after a major tire change...and ESPECIALLY when the qualifying field is so strong and large this season.

Yesterday; Burton was amazing. He was slideways several times on the last few laps before taking it to Kyle Busch. BTW - I gotta give Kyle credit for not acting like the imature idiot he usually is. As soon as he wrecked, I expected him to toss a helmet or hans device and cry like a little baby. Instead, he acted mature, which was a big surprise to me. I still despise the guy, but I appreciated the way he handled the way the race finished.

I'm putting the over/under for yellows today at 9. I'm taking the over. You guys?

Fantasy NASCAR proves popular with women fans

I (http://www.nascar.com/2007/news/headlines/cup/05/01/fantasy.nascar.women.success/index.html) think it is appropriate timing that this article comes out during week that a woman is leading the standings in the HR fantasy league. :sun:

Well folks...the first 1/2 of the season is over.

My wife takes the unofficial "First Half Championship"...but she also took that honors 2 years ago and we all know who won the final Championship. *cough* me *cough*. ;)

1 Fear the Mears (Mrs. DJ) 4,832
2 RoushRacing17 4,804
3 Rich's Wrecking Crew 4,794
4 rockaroo 4,788
5 Bfauble83 4,752
6 oldschoolrunners 4,647
7 ezdoesit74 4,627
8 frankez99 4,587
9 DJ_Stouty Racing 4,530
10 LOTP 4,499
11 Clyde Torkel's Chicken Pit 4,402
12 Fathead's Failures 4,298
13 Molasses with gasses 4,295
14 Halter's Heros 2,873
15 Crazy8`s 2,632

Mrs DJ had a horrible race in Daytona Saturday night and her 100+ lead has now evaporated to only 28 points. Poor Axe (LOTP) is quickly falling in the standings...while Rockaroo has swapped places with him and is surprising everyone by being in 4th. As you can see, we have 2 bad owners who have already tossed in the towel in Halter and Crazy8s. Bad, bad, bad!

I'm slowly creeping up the standings again...and picking off one owner every week. Frankez...you are NEXT! EzDoesIt...your on deck!

Anyway...good luck to everyone on a decent 2nd half. I hope each of your drivers on Sunday get caught speeding, then have the jack fall off the car while serving a 2nd pit-road penalty for a missing lugnut!

WOW...congrats to Kenny on demolishing the field and posting a 361 this week. (2nd, 4th, 5th and 10th) You now comfortably sit in 1st place.

If he continues a strong 2nd half, he may never look back!

Yikes...I had to go to page 2 of this forum to find this thread!

It looks like a good battle between the top 3 right now.

Kenny is tops with 7,448 points
Mrs. DJ is in 2nd, 110 points away
Rockaroo is in 3rd, 136 points away.

Our Champion is most likely in the above group, as 4th place (EZ) is 336 points away.

You're kinda late to the party but welcome. Nice recovery this year.

For the 2nd time in a month, I didn't switch up my drivers and I am stuck with my 8 drivers from last week. Last time this happened, I ended up with a 100 pt week and fell out of the front pack.

I just looked over your drivers and you are not bad off at all. You will do fine.

Just be on the lookout, b/c I'm within striking distance of your 5th place!

Rich~ I never thought I'd be only 1 point behind you with 8 races to go. ;)

I took 6th place this week. I'm taking 5th place next week...and 4th after that. Everyone has been forewarned.

The only way you get 4th DJ is if I get third...lol, We've both made decent recoveries from the bottom of the ranks though...

Catching me is nothing to brag about as I have dropped like a stone in the past 6 weeks. I have spread myself too thin with all these different fantasy leagues this year and as a result, I am doing terribly across the board in every league I'm in this year. I'm going to have to curtail the amount of fantasy sports I do next year, by about 2/3rds.

So much for me "taking" 4th place this week. I guess my punishment for making such claims is stitting in 7th and only a few points out of 8th. Of course, I had something like 300+ points during the rain delay with Tony sitting in 1st...so the fantasy Gods were definitely not looking out in my best interest. :(

Kenny~ Be on the lookout. Mrs. DJ has trimmed your lead down to only 20 points. At least one of the Stouts know their NASCAR; lol.

She is now starting to talk trash to me, asking me if I need help picking my drivers this weekend. lol

Ok...only 2 races left.

Mrs DJ has a 40 point lead on Kenny. This one will come down to the wire.

Me? I'll be happy just to stay in 7th place. :(

Congrats to Kenny on a solid Championship Run!

Kenny beat out MrsDJ in the final race to take the title...and he overcame a 90 point deficit to do it.

Mrs DJ took 2nd place in '05 as well, so she is reeling about "being the bridesmaid" for one more season.

Kudos to Kenny...!

Thanks guys. I knew I needed a big weekend, but I honestly didn't expect it to happen. All I could do is hope that Mama Stout and I didn't select the same drivers for the final race. Luckily for me we didn't, and my guys put up solid numbers.

Congrats Kenny, nice win. I had a tough first half and was able to get back to 4th place, like Rich I entered too many fantasy leagues and paid the price for it, maybe next year I can finally crack the top 3 after two 4th place finishes.
