View Full Version : Your opinion of Sonny as a possible GM

What do you think? Many believe that he has Snyder's ear on certain decisions, and some even consider him the "defacto GM" (PSF:D) I'm interested in how do you think he would do if he was given the job and your reasoning behind your opinion.

Sonny is a smart guy and he knows about football. He does have Snyder's ear, I'm told. However, he should never be our GM. In order to be an effective general manager, you've got to travel a lot and watch hours and hours of film and be immersed in football virtually all the time. Sonny is too old for that now. Not too old to do it, but too old to start it. You want your GM to start as a scout and work his way up the ladder--like Charley Casserly--all the time earning his promotions by finding diamonds in the rough. Sonny hasn't done any of that. [I also have been told Sonny encouraged Snyder to let Brad Johnson leave and focus on Jeff George. Sonny loved George's arm. This is not a recommendation for Sonny's skills as a general manager.] I like Sonny a lot. He's been a great Redskin and he does a terrific job broadcasting games. [Good thing, too, since Herzog usually cannot remember the correct down and distance and Huff clearly had too many collisions with Jim Brown in his younger days.]
In sum, I like Sonny right where he is.

I say let him continue to do what he is doing. Hell, he can't get fired being a friend with good advice. I don't want to end up hating Sonny.
Besides I would miss him calling the games on sundays.

Exactly. All points made are importnat. Sonny would probably never want the official role. Keeping him as an Advisor and broadcatser is more beneficial to everyone.

From the looks of your signature pic, it seems as if you may have Snyder's ear on some things too Kenny.:p

I think Sonny should stay where he is...Hey Kenny, since you have The Daniel's ear, you should tell him t bump me up 75000-80000 spots on the ticket waiting list. That would really help me out...Thanks

Yeah, and while you're at it, get me a tryout while I've still got my arm.

Great points spence. I 100% agree.
If you noticed, other than Ozzie Newsome, most GMs have little playing experience. The good GMS have started from scratch and learned the ins and outs. All Sonny would have is his playing experience. I do not think he'd be a good GM for us. Give a senior scout, or ass. VP of operations from another decent orginization a chance.
I also feel to be effective as a GM, you shouldn't have emotional ties as Sonny does.

Sonny is a legend and a great commentator. A GM? I dont see it.

We need him in the broadcast booth if only to correct George Michaels every five plays or so. I lost count of how many times he got the name, number, score, or quarter wrong in the Ravens game. He'd probably forget the team name every once in a while if it weren't in gigantic letters in the endzones.

I'm with everyone else. Stay Snyder's friend and stay in the booth.

I dont think Sonny should be our Gm but im pretty sure id like us to have one!Theyve done ok but i think our long term potential lies with having a GM ala Ron Wolfe, let him have a share of the team if hed help us be more consistent.

Even more important, I seriously doubt Sonny wants to give up his life of leisure to become the GM.

I wouldn't mind having Ron Wolf, but I don't think we could find a more expensive GM on the market than he.
Sonny just won't cut it though.
How about (sticking with GB) Mark Hatley?
Or even Donahoe (Bills). He's done very good things for the bills, but might come cheaper than most.

The key is finding someone willing to work with Snyder.

The problem is, you work for Snyder, you gotta go with him. Sonny doesn't thats why he shoots straight. No one that works for Snyder can really do that. So if Sonny would work for Snyder, it wouldn't work out. They would end up butting heads, and Snyder would win.

What I meant was, I thought he was learning his lesson about being a "control freak". Or am I out of the loop on this one?

Good point, Mike. Now that I think about it, I do see a resemblance between Jerry Jones and the Emperor.

I'm surprised my comment comes as a shock to people. The more I hear about SS, the more he looks like JJ to me. (other than the plastic surgery of couse) (and of course the 3 SBwins)
