I think Danny Smith did a heckuva job this season. I wasn't as down him as some are/were here, but I surely wasn't completely confident. Our special teams were the best of the three teams this season I thought.

Went with old buges....he has gotten that line into shape big time and is the reason Byner looks so good.

Went with Buges, this line is top three in the league and will dominate all season long next year in this system as long as they stay healthy. Honorable mention goes to Danny Smith who survived the angry pitchfork riots and did a darn good job this year.

Bugel. #4 rushing attack, and #3 in sacks allowed. Can't do much better than that. Byner gets honorable mention, just because without Bugel's unit doing well, he has no shot of getting production from his RBs.

Bugel did a fantastic job, but we all... or MOST of us knew he was a great coach. Danny Smith was unfairly vilified here, and had a fairly good season.
But I voted Earnest Byner who I think is slowly becoming a great assistant coach.
Why is Blache on the list again??

Yeah, I was wondering the same thing...what exactly does he do??

Great poll and tough to pick. I went with Byner simply because he had to overcome a bad injury. The offensive line was remarkably healthy all year. Danny Smith did a great job. I'd have problem with any of those three. Greg Blache, as we know, was in there for comic relief.

Bugel!

Went with Byner. The rushing production did not slip after Portis went in IR...even though he needs to work with Betts on holding onto the damn ball!
Danny Smith was great this year, but I question some of his personnel moves at P and K. Seems a bit too little too late.
Blatche? Not even close...
Bugel really got his O-line producing, but I think they benefited from Al changing the offense after Brunell was benched.

By no stretch of the imaginition do I think that Blache deserves COY but in his defense he is about the only defensive position coach who could be mentioned. His line coccupied blockers and generated modest pass rush (espescially the last half of season) but the linebackers did not make enough plays and the secondary couldn't cover the ladies from the hoverround commercial,

got to be danny, 3 blocked kicks this year!?!?!
and I don't think it is fair to question him on the kickers/punter....because in my mind that was all gibbs

Gibbs has alkways said he deferred to Danny on those decisions. I am giving Danny credit now for Frost finding consistency and luck on suisham's pickup, but SMith deserved the criticism in regards to kickers the last couple of years IMO.

Danny Smith, despite the ridiculous amount of criticism levied in his direction this year, had the most consistant unit on this team. One can even say that the overall unit excelled. Blocked Kicks, Return TD's, no return TD's given up.......

Why, because he couldn't accurately predict that Hall would be injured, or that he would lose Tom Tupa for the year? That's preposterous. The GM/Team president makes personnel decisions, and if the Head coach wears these hats, then he is the one cuplable, since you would think he sees practice everyday as well.

Danny Smith over Buges. It's like Mangini vs. Marty for coach of the year. Mangini exceeded expectations, anything less than 13-3 for the Chargers would have been a dissapointment imo.

Danny Smith. If the other coaches can produce like Smith did with his unit, this would be a very good team.

Well the HC is responsible for everything though...but I digress since I do think Smith did a very good job this year and if Frost and Suisham keep their consistency then he will be a solid all around special team coach next year as well.
I still think real competition needs to be brought in for both though, if only to sign someone later in the season in case one gets injured or starts to suck.

I agree that "real" competition should've been brought in over the course of the last 2 seasons, but I don't fault the Position Coach for the team failing to do so. I think he did/has done a bang-up job with what he has had to work with.

I voted Smith because his units were the most consistent all year. The line had more down moments through the first few weeks of the season to be Buges.
Plus if not for the blocked kicks could you imagine just how much worse it would have been for our offense when you consider how often the defense gave the O a short field off a turnover?

My vote goes to the special teams coach for the turnaround from last year to this year.

Danny Smith. His unit was the most consistent all year (save for Novak's missed FGs). The blocked kicks and punts, Suisham doing well and Frost's improvement over last year should be attributable to Smith. I've bashed him time and time again, now I will give credit to where it is due.

i may reconsider my vote, cause you all bring up very good points on buges.

No one. How can we have a coach of the year with a miserable season. Sure a lot of coaches turned their units around and started producing, but not until it didn't matter anymore.
Danny Smith turned around his unit, but I still contend that he was fairly criticized. Lets see if he does it when games matter and that goes for Bugel too.

Coach Byner gets my vote. Portis goes out Betts steps in and up. Great job.

Ernest Byner, is my choice, why because our running backs never failed.

i went with bugel. but all these other guys did nice jobs
bugel-line was a beast look at the rushing yds by betts, adjusted big oline to new offense
blache-developed two rookies at dt they have a ways to go but they look promising,to be at least great depth, but the big running games teams had takes away his vote from me
danny smith-really wanted to vote for him because this was not only the consistent unit it was the only good unit all year, but he didnt get my vote because he let hall there at the begining,he should of lobbied to gibbs well nevermind
byner-did a great job with his backs, got to work with betts and rock on holding onto the rock, although rock doesnt fumble on teams which is good

Danny Smith. Buges deserved a look but the line didn't gel and become dominant until late. Smith's Teams were good all season long. Blocked punts, consistenly won the field position game for us. EB doesn't have enough profile for me to tell.
Blache may have coached his butt off this year but with Griff being injured for major stretches (again) this year, we didn't have an NFL caliber starter on the line: Golston (rook), Salave'a (hurt, old), Daniels (hurt, old, ineffective), Wynn (old, recovering, ineffective), Mongomery (rook, inactive mostly), Carter (good after the season was in the tank), and Evans (good in flashes then disappears).
