View Full Version : How strong are we at the DB position?

I was surprised to see that Alex Moulden was cut. Are you kidding me? Here is what we have at DB right now (as I see it):
#1. Champ Bailey: Best shut-down corner in the league. What else needs to be said?
#2. Fred Smoot: Probably "better than average" #2 CB. Still has a lot to learn. Plays un-even (you know, good one week/poor the next). makes outstanding plays, but has lapses as well and can get burnt from time to time. All in all, a more than adequate DB and servicable in the #2 slot.
#3. Rashad Bauman: Known to have "good cover skills". Makes a decent Nickel back. A bit small and not extremely aggressive. Sometimes, he gives the opposing WR a little bit too much room. I personally don't think that he would make a good #2 CB. He's a Nickel at best. I would say that he is at least average.
AFTER THAT, WE HAVE THE LIKES OF:
Ade Jimoh
Kenneth Davis
Ricoh Joseph
ETC.
Question: WHO ARE THESE GUYS??????? Should one of our top 3 get injured (God forbid), who is going to step in and contribute? What about Dime packages? Who is going to be in the game?
I (for one) thought that the acquisition of Moulden was a good one. We basically had a #4 DB WHO WAS A RECENT STARTER IN THE NFL!!!! HOW'S THAT FOR DEPTH???? He wasn't overly impressive in pre-season, but he is learning a new system. Plus, who WAS "overly impressive" (on D) in pre-season??
Maybe it's just me, but I don't understand this cut at all (unless there is some significant Salary Cap savings in it for us). Someone help me make sense of this one!!!!!!!!!!!!

They might figure Terrell can be the #4 and move up to #3 if need be.

Actually, from what i understand, Bauman is in a fight for the third CB role. Ade Jimoh has impressed coaches and is now in a neck to neck battle with Bauman. That is what precipitated the release of Molden. I think the quality of play and hard work they got from Jimoh was not expected when they signed Molden.

Today I heard it's basically Bauman's job to be #3. I don't understand the Molden cut either but I'm trusting our guys know what they're doing.

It must have been quite a workout to get us to just throw away Moulden's signing bonus. Got to be the quickest $200,000 he has ever made.

Both Jimoh and Smith(LB) could be diamonds in the rough. Before the start of his last college season, Smith was a top, if not the top rated ILB. Injuries knocked him out of the draft I guess. Jimoh was being talked about by some services as a "really really, good player some team will take a chance on in the middle of the draft" "somebody's scouting dept. will look good after pushing for this pick" Then after the draft, "The best undrafted player..." I thought and still hope, the Redskins stole these two.

I agree Cam. I think Jimoh will see more action simply because it will be tough for Clifton Smith to get playing time behind Arrington, Trotter, Armstead, and I am assuming Pierce is ahead on the depth chart. But, ya gotta love the find.

Jimoh is a huge cornerback that excels in man to man coverage. He will match up well on some of the bigger receiver's in the league. He makes an excellent corner to use on double coverage for a Terrell Owens type receiver.
These are the types of players you hope to find in every training camp.
My darkhorse, Larry Austin, is still hanging on!

#4 DB's generally don't get alot of PT. In the nickel you generally have 3 CB's and your 2 safeties. If you are a 4th DB, you are either a good ST'er or being groomed to eventually move up. If Molden couldn't beat Bauman for #3, then it makes sense to cut him and develop more youth at that position. Jimoh has many intangibles, one of which is his size, 6'1". He looks like a candidate for swing time between CB and S.
I feel this is a strong move by the FO. Molden is a career underachiever considering his draft position when he came out.

I was under the impression that was IF he made the opening day roster.
I don't know all the contracts like some of you do, so can someone clarify this?

That reminds me of the movie "Major League" when the fans are going through the roster of players for the season. "Who are these f-in guys?" :lol1:
I'm sure they know better than we do. Like I said, I was under the impression Molden's contract was IF he made the opening day roster, so it very well could have been a salary cap move, and sometimes the scrubs just want it more.

Whoa! Man, I hope that this is true. To be quite honest, I don't know much about Ade Jimoh.............actually, I had NEVER heard of him before training camp. Does anyone know what he runs in the 40??? Speed never hurts. If he can also play special teams, he is a keeper.

Bauman has disciplined cover skills from what I've seen from him in nickel situations. I'm a fan. I guess if Molden can't beat Bauman, then why not keep the young blood, Jimoh, on the roster? Cheaper and more upside possibly. As always with backups, can he cover punts and kicks effectively? Apparently better than Molden. I won't question this move.

there is mention of DBs, but no mention of Matt Bowen and Ifeanyi Ohalete. Bowen has been hitting the snot out of people (Just ask Candidate) and Ifi played very well last year and earned his spot in the starting lineup.
The 4 guys that will be out there for 90% of the plays are a very good secondary. Bauman has played very well, and Terrell, as bad as he is, probably makes a good guy to have come off the bench. Look for these 2 to split time in Dime packages. Plus you have Andre Lott, another capable safety.
I believe we are very strong at Secondary, something we could not say 2 years ago...

Plus Lott also played CB in College (as well as Safety).

Remember what good things D. green said about Bauman Last year? he gave the kid his stamp of approval and if green says your good.......your good! Jimoh was a beast in camp....had to keep him.

Yup. Jimoh's play ion camp allowed the Skins to make the decision on Molden. I have no worries at DB. I have worries at DE

That's right, Lott played corner at UT. I feel confident with what we have right now. Let's save some cash from Molden and sign Champ.

Yeah, I'm just not seeing a good pass rush happening any time soon. You give a QB enough time, and he'll pick apart ANY set of DB's.
Smith needs to have a career year!
How's Jackson looking?
