View Full Version : A 'different' outlook on the Dalton deal!!!!

When you think of it, we basically TRADED Darryl Gardener for Lionel "Jelly" Dalton!!! I kinda think of it this way:
* I LOVED Gardener, but lets face it, he had some issues; most notably his ailing back injury that could flare up at ANYTIME and his "attitude" (he already will miss the Broncos first 3 games due to his partaking in a 'fight').
* Gardener was asking for a multi-year deal that would have nearly broke the Redskins bank. It would have been even HARDER to sign Champ. Keep in mind also, that Dalton REDUCED his salary to PLAY FOR US!!!!
* We basically got a quality DT for the price of Cantelopes on sale at your local Giant food stores!!!!!!!!!!!!!
* Dalton seems motivated to play and Gardener seems motivated by money. The multi-year offer that the Redskins gave Gardener was more than fair (given his history).
* Dalton KNOWS our Defense and thrived in it for years with the Ravens. He also has a Super Bowl ring....and that can't be bad.
Come to think of it, I'm starting to warm up to having Jelly Jam up the middle of our D-Line!!!

I like the fact that Dalton WANTED to be here. He was excited at coming to play for the Redskins. Dalton was brought in by Rhoads, Ray liked him alot, but as when all DC's leave, some of the player they bring in, fall out of favor.
Dalton will clog the run. Dalton will help stop the run, but Dalton will not give much pass pressure. That is OK with me. What i want our Dts to do is concentrate on stopping the damn run.
I am actually more concerned about our DE at this point.
I dunno about any of you, butI actually like, after thinking about it, the way our DT are better than before. I like the rotation of Haley, Holsey, Chase, and Dalton better than I liked Buig Daddy and Noble. The rotation will help keep the DT fresh and all are guys that can help. I like the way it looks now.

Not to mention that fact that all four of them are beefy. This will help us in our weakest point... stopping the run. All i ask is that they tie up 2 guys each... work together... and open up the lanes for our LB's to get sacks!

Holsey is a bit undersized at 286.

I think we should start a charity to beef his butt up a bit.

When is Tony Siragusa going to start his own diet plan? That's the one Holsey needs.

Here is another way to look at it. Daryl Gardener is a mercenary with injury problems. He is a good player when he is healthy. But he was too expensive and had to go. Big Daddy? He had the highest 2003 base salary on the team and is an underachiever. While his potential was great, Big Daddy never really laid it on the line for this team. He took too many plays off. They have been replaced by Martin Chase and Jelly Roll Dalton, whose combined salaries are far less than the mountain of money that Wilkinson was due, much less what Gardener wanted. Both of these guys can play and both really want to be in DC. The defensive line is as strong now as it was going into last season. The cost? Mid round draft choices. This is the bargain of the year. Plus, the Skins get more cap room to re-sign Champ, which should be the top priority these days.

I saw on ESPN he's expected back / healthy for week 1. Is he going to miss due to suspention?

I like Dalton because he is cheap. I still have no idea if any rotation of Dalton, Chase, Holsey, Haley, Cowsette is going to be effective. PSF, I'm also concerned about the ends. I'm not a huge Wynn fan. He doesn't have the upfield motor or mentality. I like seeing pressure in the backfield. I'm unsure how Upshaw will play after his injury. I'm still thinking Bruce is our only hope at big plays from the outside (other than the LBs coming around).

That's a pretty fair summation of my thoughts and concerns, as well.

Even with weak DEs on the pass rush, I'm willing to risk it with our DBs that we have. Teams shouldn't have a lot of success passing the ball. We just have to stop the run consistently and I think we win the game.

Last year, we were one of only 5 teams to hold opponants under 300 yards a game. All we need to do is duplicate that (easy said than done I know, but we have most of the talent still here) and IMPROVE on offense.
The offense and special teams KILLED us last year. We have made great strides to make both better. I'm not too worried about the D.

Welcome to hR Riggo_drill, glad you joined us.
I'll support the Form More Flab Foundation for the simple fact that it's a funny a$$ name.
Holsey, could stand to lose a bit Spence but not a lot. I saw Siragusa in the boot during the replay of the game yesterday. What a lard a$$.

Living here, near Charlotte, I see the Panthers DBs look like Pro-Bowl level even though they are lower level. The reason is, the awesome front four of the Panthers defense puts so much pressure on the opponent's QB, so quickly, that passes are weak, poorly thrown or often thrown away. A good D-line makes the DBs job easy. If the Panthers' D-line does not make the play, more often than not the Panthers' DBs let a big play happen. We HAVE TO have pressure from our front four (7). No matter how good our DBs, they can't cover forever.

I agree with all of that. Gotta love Peppers and Rucker.

the 4 man rotation should keep us fresh in many games. also glad they did not give up the money to big daddy or DG. I think the ends will do fine.

I agree REDMAN. That is a key, and vital point, these guys coming in and out will work to an advantage for us because of freshness.

Haven't seen much of Upshaw in pre-season. The jury is still out on him (IMO). Bruce is 40 and Wynn is, well, average. Zellner has looked good in pre-season (IMO), but it's just that, pre-season. LaDarius has great "potential" and I love his motor, but still isn't quite there at this time. I guess that I agree with PSF to a point in that DE may (just may) be more of a concern than DT.

i want to see how your dline holds up against jacksonville. then i will comment on them. dalton will only help i assume. our linebackers are great, and should be better this year. and i love our corners, and safety is only a small concern for us. i think the skins offense will be full of highlight plays in the 2nd half of the season. definitly contend for nfc east champs if dalton plays good.

I agree to a point but we are forgetting about ladarius Jackson, he is quick and has a motor to boot. IMO he is better than Wynn by far and i'm still not sure as to where Upshaw fits in.

Not sure if this was mentioned, but how about THIS for a "different take" on one Lional Dalton:
Broncos defense in games Dalton started:
80.0 yards rushing against
Broncos defense in games Dalton didn't start:
149.7 yards rushing against

I hope he can have that same impact here. Thanks Rat.

Don't recall exactly, but the reaminder of his deal he signed last year minus his signing bonus was 6 years 14.5 mil -- he agreed to reduce his salary this year, but the remaining years are over 2 mil each I believe. It can always be renogicated and the skins don't have to absorb any signing bonus (the Broncos took that hit) Skins could redo his deal in the offseason and sign him to a contract based on how he plays this year or leave it be

Here is the original blurb when he signed with the Donkeys:Broncos | Dalton Officially Signed - from www.KFFL.com
Wed, 3 Apr 2002 14:03:57 -0800
Updating previous reports, DenverBroncos.com reports the Denver Broncos have officially signed DT Lional Dalton (Ravens). The deal is believed to be worth $22 million over seven-years.
Dalton is under contract for the next 6 years, though we may want to renegotiate his deal and give him some bonus or something.
Here are his base salaries, which is all we are responsible for since it was a trade:
2003 - $900,000 (Reduced it from 1.6 million for us)
2004 - $1,800,000
2005 - $3,000,000
2006 - $3,000,000
2007 - $3,000,000
2008 - $3,000,000

Good research Ratty...If he stops the run like he did in Denver then, I think he will be well worth that money and the 5th rounder.

He gave up more money with the Cheifs to become a starter here. That says something to me. He has heart and cares more about playing then the paycheck. Like him already. Besides now we got a guy called Jelly on the team..Gotta love that! :D
