View Full Version : Is Cliff Russell safe?

I have been hearing rumblings about Cliff Russell and whether or not he will actually make the team. They mentioned it a couple of times in the game against the Ravens...........stating that he needs to "make plays" and has not been overly impressive in camp. I also read somewhere (can't remember) the same thing. This comes as a surprise to me. I had him chalked in (on my personal depth board:D) as the #4 WR. Has anyone else heard that he is in a fight to make the roster?
On another note, I think that Patrick Johnson MADE the Roster (IMO) with his special teams play against the Ravens.

Interesting, do they like Woodcock enough on STs as a 6th WR to throw Russell on the practice squad? Maybe there is more swelling in his knee and extended recovery time needed that is not being reported. I have no idea though.

Actually, I still don't know how Woodcock beat out Cloman. I haven't heard that Russell was having any health (knee) problems.
He is (supposedly) the fastest (or second fastest) player on our roster. He did have a dropped ball in the Ravens game, but he was "wide open" on one play (bad throw....or he looked for the ball in the wrong direction), and he was clearly pass interfered with on another play. I dunno. With his speed, it seems that he should be on the roster. Oh yeah, and he has made a few tackles on ST this pre-season.

I think he is on the bubble. will probably have to really play well against J'ville in order to make club.

to me i view what little ive seen of Russell as another Patrick Johnson.Really fast, yet inconsistent in other aspects of the game.He may go on to be very good for someone else if we dont keep him but i think we took him a round or two too high much like Betts. Both of those guys have potential,Betts more so than Russell IMO.

Russell needs to come out tomorrow night and make a good three grabs and not drop the ball. Period. He simply has tan easy task. They are not looking to cut him, they are just looking for a small reason to keep him.

I am really excited about tomorrows game against the Jags. We will see limited action from the starters (and we kinda know what they can do) and see a whole lot from the players "on the proverbial bubble". I really want to see how these guys play. I wan't to see Russell, Jimoh, Clifton Smith, my man Sultan McCollough, Gibran Hamden, etc. play. I also want to see a heavy dose of Taylor Jacobs. I know he can play, but he has not been incorporated much in the offense yet.

Woops. Almost forgot. It would be interesting to see where Hue Jackson will be (on the sidelines or up in the booth) and the plays that we will call (and how they are executed). Most of all, I want us to leave this game HEALTHY!!!!!!!!

Yeah, Woodcock has played well on ST. Cliff Russell is fast but he needs to hold onto the ball and catch what's thrown at him.

A lot of people had Russell on their personal depth boards at #4 without even seeing him catch a ball. (I personally had him #5 behind DMC, who actually has caught a football)
Regardless, I think we are all guilty of "assuming" a 3rd round draft pick would automatically be a #4, or even make the squad.
I have no problems dropping Russell if plays sloppy. Even if he did make the team, Spurrier would probably bench him anyway.

i dont think the skins will give up on him yet. he hasnt had enough onfield time and i think his potential alone will give him another year.

The 2002 Draft was not exactly steeped in talent. The only guys picked after Betts and Russell who have lit it up from the 2002 draft have been Antwan Randle El (late 2nd) who just fit the Steelers' "slash" template perfectly and TE Randy McMichael (late 4th). Most everybody else has been ho-hum, wait and see and/or injury bugged. So maybe our guys need some time too.

I can't see Russell getting cut. A 3rd rounder from 1 year ago who is recovering from a knee injury. They have to give him time to 1. recover and 2. develop into a good player.

I think he has to much promise to let go. The man can flat out fly! Just give him some time.

Having speed is great but can he catch. That is the question.

Remember this is almost like russell's rookie season. He'll make the team. Sonny was just talking Sh*t because he droped a few balls & had some miscommunication with Rob Johnson. I wouldn't put a lot of stock into what Sonny says. Woodstock making the team before russell PLEASE!!! I think russell has the potental be a starter when healthy with another team. I actually like him better than Jacobs for the #3 wideout.
